An effort needs to be made to identify Samuel Smith and locate him as a resident of Sophiasburgh. The book has 208 pages and we only transcribed a few pages as it was not an easy task. Our work is posted here with the permission of the archives. See the surname index that starts at image 03.

In Jan 2020, Vanessa Herring identified the Samuel Smith that made this ledger. She wrote that, "the UEL pioneer Benjamin Smith (b. 1774) was the father of Samuel Smith. The history and genealogy of the family is included in the book "Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte", pages 757 to 760. Benjamin Smith was from Long Island, NY, and went first to Nova Scotia, and then nearly a year later traveled by water to Prince Edward County. He received 140 acres in Northport, but later moved to land he had purchased near Demorestville. There he built a sawmill and gristmill. It is stated that "He attained a position of considerable wealth and importance in the community. He died in 1834."

"His son Samuel carried on the business after him. Looking at the 1878 Atlas of Sophiasburgh at McGill University, Sarah Smith, widow of Samuel lives on Lot 36, 1st conc. West of Green Point. Isaac Hamilton is a neighbor. Her son Samuel N Smith married first Emma Hamilton (d. 1857, buried Demorestville Cemetery). Sarah and her son George W Smith also owned Lot 41, and Son Samuel N Smith lived on Lot 42."

"Here are the families in the 1871 Census of Sophiasburgh:
George W Smith  41  Miller and farmer
Louisa                39  (nee Sprague)
Sarah E              16
Samuel Smith     69  Miller and farmer
Sarah                 61  (nee Howell)
Samuel N Smith  37  Miller and farmer
Olive A               26  (2nd wife, nee Weeks)
Sarah VIctoria      5
Samuel George    3
Elizabeth A          8/12
All are shown to have been born in Ontario. However, in the 1861 Census Samuel Smith Sr. is shown as born in New York, and his mother Sarah, 91 year old widow of Benjamin Smith, is shown born in New York State."

My thanks to Vanessa
