Records of the Bay or Quinte Why I am interested in this family In Feb. 2013, Barb Zinter, of Calgary, sent me a document that spoke of Emma Pearsall (b. Feb 1861) being taken in and raised by Robert and Catherine Saylor at age 5 1/2 after her parents had both died. See the document here. This was "news to me" so it demanded investigation. Then it dawned on me. DNA evidence strongly suggests that Charles Wesley Saylor (1863-1942) was adopted and raised by Caleb and Caroline Saylor. Caleb and Robert are brothers. Could it be that Charles W. Saylor was a brother of Emma and a Pearsall by natural birth and both orphaned children were taken in by the two the families of Robert and Caleb Saylor? This web page is about this challenge and is focused on collecting information about the Pearsall's of Prince Edward County. © Randy Saylor, 2013 |

1. EMMA PEARSALL and HER PARENTS A major event in the life of Emily [Emma] Janette Pearsall was recorded in the affidavit mentioned above.
Emma's marriage registration states that her parents were Addison & Mary Jane Pearsall. Mary Jane Jones is identified as Addison's wife in History and Genealogy of the Pearsall Family in England and America [p. 1318]. Emma's adoption would have occurred about August 1866 after the death of her parents and in those days adoption was an informal practice. There must have been a bond between the families that created the trust for this to occur. The affidavit was made by her step brother, David Southard Saylor. Robert and Catherine Saylor were Quakers in Hallowell Tp. and the Pearsalls were Episcopal in Sophiasburgh. The connection is a mystery. Emma is not recorded in the 1861 census along with her older siblings, Gidden, David and Lucina. In the 1871 census Emma is recorded as living with Robert and Catherine Saylor and her surname is stated as Pearsall [transcribed as Parsol in Ancestry]. This indicates that the adoption was not kept a secret. In 1881, Emma "Saylor" married Alfred Yarwood in Sault Ste Marie and there is a note at the bottom of the civil registration stating "The bride was an adopted child of Rob H Saylor, she took their name." She identifies her parents in the marriage register as Addison and Mary Jane Pearsall. Addison's father is Thomas Pearsall. The fact that she adopted Saylor as her surname suggests she had a good relationship with her adopted family. 2. DNA EVIDENCE FOR CHARLES WESLEY SAYLOR Caleb Saylor was a brother of Robert Saylor who adopted Emma Pearsall. YDNA results suggest that Charles W. Saylor, b. 1863 was also adopted by Caleb and raised as a Saylor. Is he a younger brother of Emma? We need a descendant of the Prince Edward County Pearsall's to provide a YDNA sample. If the supposition is true, then the Pearsall YDNA should match tests 62606 and 194392 of group 2 of the Saylor YDNA Project. For more on this, see section 12 on this web page about Charles Saylor, father of Caleb and Robert. Back to top | |
3. THE PEARSALL FAMILY - OVERVIEW Any study of the Pearsall family in North America has to include the massive book titled, History and Genealogy of the Pearsall Family in England and America, Clarence E. Pearsall, 1928, H.S. Crocker Co., San Francisco, 1928, 3 Volumes. A pdf of the book was posted at http://www.pearsall-family.org but the link no longer works. Chapter 41 has considerable information about Uriah Pearsall who was the progenitor of the Pearsall's who settled in Prince Edward County. Clarence E. Pearsall names the 8 sons of Uriah and names the 6 of them that emigrated to Sophiasburgh. These 6 are amply represented in the census, land and other records in Prince Edward County. The death registration of son Uriah states that he was born in Hempstead, Long Island, NY. Clarence E. Pearsall does not state where he got this information from but it matches up well. Uriah Pearsall, born around 1760, son of Samuel Pearsall, grew up at Near Rockaway, Hempstead, Long Island, NY. On 11 Jan 1785 he married Rebecca Whitmore at the First Presbyterian Church in nearby Jamaica, NY. A fire in 1803 destroyed the church's records. An 1873 map shows the area of Hempstead South including Rockaway, the village of Pearsall (now Lynbrook) and many Pearsall families owning farms in the area. The 1790 census has Uriah Pearsall with a wife and one son living in South Hempstead and this is most likely this same family. No Uriah is in the 1800 census but there are two in the 1810 census, both in this area. One of them has 2 sons under 10, two between 10 and 16 and three between 16 and 15, plus a wife and two daughters. His daughters are not known but he had eight sons in NY and the ages are consistent with the birth dates that are known. This is likely the same family. Using the Clarence E. Pearsall book, census data and other local sources, we can state that Uriah and his wife Rebecca had the following children. ii. SAMUEL PEARSALL was born in Dec 1790 in Near Rockaway, Long Island, NY. He died on 06 Mar 1857 in Near Rockaway, Long Island, NY. He married SARAH WRIGHT. She was born in Jun 1792 in Long Island, NY. She died on 23 Jul 1860 in Near Rockaway, Long Island, NY. iii. WILLIAM PEARSALL was born in 1793 in USA. He died after 1871 in Hillier Tp, PEC. iv. JAMES PEARSALL was born on 04 Jun 1796 in Near Rockaway, Long Island, NY. He died on 06 Mar 1857 in Near Rockaway, Long Island, NY. He married Elizabeth Combs on 11 Jan 1817 in St George's Ch., Hempstead, LI, NY. v. THOMAS PEARSALL was born in 1801 in NY State. He died after 1861 in Sophiasburgh TP, PEC. He married LYDIA GARDINER. She was born in 1805 in Upper Canada. vi. URIAH PEARSALL was born in Feb 1799 in Hempstead, Long Island, NY. He died 7 Aug 1887 in Sophiasburgh TP, PEC. He married LAURA FOSTER. She was born about 1807 in USA and died bef. 1887. vii. AMOS PEARSALL was born on 01 Dec 1803 in Near Rockaway, Long Island, NY. He died on 31 Jan 1879 in Tyendiaga, Hastings Co., ON. He married Sarah Valleau on viii. BENJAMIN PEARSALL was born about 1806 in USA. He died in 1872 in Hillier Tp, PEC. He married MARY NORTON. She was born about 1806. She died in May 1881. Samuel and James stayed in Long Island and all the rest emigrated to Upper Canada. Probably any unknown daughters also remained in the USA. Clarence E. Pearsall writes in 1928 that Uriah "was a loyalist during the Revolutionary War. The writer personally examined the old records in the Government Land Office at Toronto, and although the claim taken up by Uriah Pearsall was never perfected to him, but to his son, there is no question in the minds of the government officials that it represented a gift to an English loyalist, particularly because it states that it was a free gift. Uriah did not remove with his family until sometime after the treaty of peace was signed." [1313]. Clarence Pearsall must be referring to the 1800 schedule of granted lands for the Midland District which shows a "John Parsalls" being given a free grant for 100 acres on Lot 28, concession 2 in Adolphustown. The census returns for Adolphustown from 1794 to 1822 show no man by that or similar name. Peter Johnson, past President of the UEL Assoc. of Canada informs me that, "about 1787 George PARLIAMENT and wife Maria (I think) GARNIER arrived in this Province, and George reportedly died within weeks of getting here. Widow Marie, a little later, married John PARSALLS and I think they moved to Sophiasburgh Tp. The PARLIAMENTS like PARSALLS have ties to NJ and also perhaps Orange Co NY." There is another account about John Parcells who "settled on lot 10, Marsh Front, Sophiasburg ... in the 1790's ... Parcells served the Royal cause in Major Van Alstine's company" [ Belden Atlas, 1878, p. xvii]. Clearly this John Parsall in 1800 is not related to the Long Island Pearsalls and Clarence Pearsall was incorrect in his assumptions. Uriah's son John was born around 1785 so did not take part in the revolution. If Uriah had fought and been considered a loyalist then his name should be on any report of those granted land in Adolphutown. It makes no sense that when John was 15 somehow the authorities would change the grant into his name, as Clarence Pearsall seems to suggest. No petition for Uriah as a loyalist survives and none of his children petitioned as sons and daughters of a loyalist. The NY census reports for 1810 and 1820 have the family still on Long Island. We can safely conclude that the John Parsalls named for the grant in Adolphustown is not part of this family. It is also my conclusion that Uriah was not considered a loyalist who supported the British cause during the revolution. The family must have come as settlers, but again, no petition as settlers has survived. Nor are they in the land books being granted free land. The well known book, Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte [PLBQ] states that John Pearsall's "father, Uriah Pearsall, preceded him from Long Island to Canada some three years before John migrated, and even, it is said, came to Prince Edward County. He must, however, have found it convenient to settle in some other part of the country, as there is no trace of him anywhere on the Bay of Quinte; and so, his son John, who followed him and may have been induced to do so by letters to Long Island from his father, must figure as the founder of the family in Prince Edward County." [659 - 663] The PLBQ account, written c1904, may guide us to when Uriah came to Prince Edward County. Both Uriah and his son John appear to be in the 1820 NY census in Queen's County. Smith Pearsall, son of John and grandson of Uriah, was born on Long Island in 1822. And, Thomas Pearsall, son of John and grandson of Uriah, was born in 1825 in Upper Canada. Given these births and following the story in PLBQ - John came between 1822 and 1825 and Uriah is said to have come 3 years earlier - around 1820. Probably Uriah died shortly after emigrating and left no trace of his presence. The land records (see below) do not tell a clear story. We know from petitions starting in 1829 that John, Uriah and Oliver were here and probably paying to farm land that had been leased by others. In 1839 a petition has Benjamin and Thomas named. Ultimately they all get title, often with a mortgage, to land. However they had to struggle with petitions to get title to land leased by others suggesting they were not able to buy land outright and thus they were not well off emigrants. PLBQ makes the claim that son John is the progenitor of the family in Prince Edward County. He was the oldest son and married with 6 children when he emigrated. In 1829 he is living in Sophiasburg Tp and signs a petition with his brother, Uriah. However by 1851, he has moved to Hibbert Tp, Huron County, part of the Huron Tract opened in the 1830's by the Canada Company between Stratford and Goderich. He and his wife and youngest daughter are living with the families of his son Dorland and son-in-law Robert J Norton. By 1861, widower John has returned to Sophiasburgh for the rest of his days. Five of the brothers settle on farms very close together along a border between Hillier and Sophiasburgh. John, Thomas and Uriah farm in Sophiasburgh. Uriah is a blacksmith in Demorestville in 1876 as stated in brother John's death registration. William and Benjamin farm in Hillier. Amos farms in Tyendiaga Tp across the bay in Hastings County. See the land record section below. One final note about the spelling of the surname in various records. The variety exists in not only how it is written in contemporary clear handwriting but also by transcribers who really mess up the name. The spelling as transcribed on Ancestry has been left to help others find the record. RECORDS RELATING TO URIAH PEARSALL SR NEAR ROCKAWAY The children of Uriah Pearsall and Rebecca Whitmore were born at Near Rockaway. It is said to have been a hamlet and is not found on modern maps. The 1790 and 1810 NY census place Uriah in South Hempstead, Queens County, NY and this is consistent with the location. An 1873 map of Hempstead South from the book, Long Island, Beers, Comstock & Cline, 1873, shows many Pearsalls living in the area. A village named Pearsall (now Lynbrook) is located near Rockaway. 1790 NY CENSUS Uriah Pearsall, 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16 and 1 female.
