Pioneers of the Bay of Quinte Why I am interested in this man. In attempting to learn more about a Jacob George Smith of Sidney Tp it was found that in 1796 both John Lott and Jacob George Smith petitioned together. It is unusual for two men to petition together for land so the idea was to learn more about John Lott in the hope that it might shed some light of Jacob George Smith. Lott has brought to my attention the book, Lott Family in America by
A.V. Phillips (1943). David searched the book to find the Johannes Lott from
the Albany area who eventually came to Canada as a loyalist. He writes that
"I looked painstakingly (in a hard to navigate online edition) for a
Peter, John or Johannes Lott anywhere near Albany or the Obling, and found none

| 1. OVERVIEW We learn from the petitions below that John Lott was born in the Oblong part of New York - a narrow northerly strip between NY and CT - and that he later moved to the Claverack area for 8 years before the Rev War started in 1777. One of the war records supplied by Gavin Watt below states that John Lott was born in 1758, probably calculated from an age given on a return. However the war record may not be for the same man and given that John Lott's wife was 60 in 1801, and given the birth years of his children it seems more likely he was born in the 1740's. Researcher Lynn Watson informs that her records show his birth to be on 10 April 1743 and baptized 12 May in Ancram, Albany Co., NY, but she does not have supporting NY church records. John died about 1822 as stated in the petition of his son Peter. Records below show that John Lott joined the British side in 1777 and fought with Burgoyne and later with Jessup's Loyal Rangers and was prisoner at his own farm. The farm was confiscated at the end of the war. He came to Upper Canada in 1787, though one affadavit states 1784. There is no Loyalist Claim record for John Lott (or other spelling). In 1811 he is forced to petition to have his name restored to the UE list. His children successfully petiton for land as sons and daughters of a Loyalist. In 1796 John Lott petitions along with Jacob George Smith for the remaining 50 acres of his 450 acres and it states that he has already been granted 400 acres of lot 10, Concessions 1 and 2 in Sidney. In 1796 there is a petition from Andrew Lott of Sidney for land. He claims to be 29, from Dutchess County and a labourer. He makes no claim to be a son of John Lott. In 1812, John Lott Sr sells his lot 10, Con 1and 2 to Andrew Lott and Baltus Lott. We know that Baltus Lott is a son of John Lott Sr from his petition but Andrew is a question mark. It is my opinion that he is possibly the oldest son. In 1801 John Lott Senior was married to Eve [Finkle] Lott, born 1741, the daughter of George Finkle UE. This could be a later wife given that PLBQ states that John Lott, the pioneer, married a daughter of John Smith in Sidney. There are a number of errors in the PLBQ account so not much weight is given to this statement. In 1796 John states that he has 6 children and a wife. PLBQ names his children as Jacob, John, Peter, Andrew, Charles and Lanie. No records have been found for Jacob, Charles and Lanie, and only the one petition for Andrew saying nothing of a relationship. However there is circumstantial evidence suggesting that Andrew is the eldest child. No will for John Lott Sr has been found. Therefore, 6 known children of John Lott Sr and his wife Eve Finkle are:
There is also a Philip Lott in the area at this early time and he dies around 1816 and is father to Jonas, Elizabeth and a another John. Any connection between Philip and John is unknown at this time. Anyone who has information is encouraged to come forward. |
| 2. PIONEER LIFE ON THE BAY OF QUINTE [PLBQ] The famous book PLBQ states that, John Lott, the pioneer, cleared lands and settled the back of Sidney, near a settlement that was called Johnstown. Another John who settled nearby was John Smith, whose daughter married the pioneer. Their children were Jacob, John, Peter, Andrew, Charles and Lanie. Of these John married Caroline Rose. Charles Lott, son of John Lott, the pioneer, married Mary Jane Gardner. It also states that the four Lotts: John, Baltus, Andrew and Jonas, who came from New York after the Revolutionary War and settled in Upper Canada, were not four brothers, "as are generally supposed" ... and are distantly related to one another. Missing in this account is Philip Lott who died sometime around 1816, [491-2]. On the whole the account in PLBQ does not match well with what the record shows so little credence will be given to this resource which was published in 1904. |
| 3. REVOLUTIONARY WAR RECORDS In 1796, John Lott is noted on a petition as a loyalist and in 1811 he petitions successfully to have his name restored on the UE list. His children successfully apply for a land grant as sons and daughters of a loyalist. He provides evidence that he was with Burgoyne in 1777 and with Major Edward Jessup's Loyal Rangers which was formed in 1781. He was a prisoner held on his own farm. The various UE lists that are about do not show John Lott of Sidney. Peter Johnson contacted Gavin Watt, a loyalist scholar, who supplied the notes below. Gavin remarked that, "I think this fellow is legitimate, as James Robins and Hans Walter Meyer both support him. I believe John Lott is the man below. You will see that he has an abnormal number of spellings to his surname; one of them being Lott on Eben Jessup’s 1777 Expense account. [1] Pte John Loeb. | 4. PETITIONS OF JOHN LOTT SENIOR Three petitions for John Lott Sr have survived and confirm he was a loyalist, coming to Upper Canada in 1787 and by 1796 had a wife and six children. He was granted Lot 10, Concessions 1 and 2 including the broken front in Sidney. He sold this land in 1811 to Andrew and Baltus Lott and a piece also to John W Meyers. See the records below. 1796 PETITION [44] 21 June 1796, Jacob George Smith and Johannes Lott each having recieved 400 [acres] each only of the annexed certificate for 450 acres of land - pray for 50 additional acres. | 5. THREE PETITIONS ON THE SAME DAY!! These three nearly identically worded petitions were all made the same day, in the same handwriting of John Bleecker, JP, and confirm that:

| 6. ANDREW LOTT Andrew is 29 so therefore born about 1767 in the then province of NY. Andrew buys a part of the farm lot 10, con 1 from John Lott Sr along with Baltus Lott who is a son of John. Note that Andrew and John Jr (below) both petition on 2 April 1796 and neither state that they are sons of John Lott Sr UE at that time. I had thought that Andrew was probably a son of John but the christening below suggests Andrew is a son of Philip Lott and his wife Elzabeth. After buying the farm in 1811 Andrew never petitioned again. | 8. BARBARA LOTT, DAUGHTER OF JACOB SMITH UE OF ERNESTOWN Barbara Smith, daughter of Jacob Smith, UE of Ernestown married a Lott. She is 81 according to the petition below in 1850 so was born about 1769. Her sister, Mary Smith married a Stickle. Based on the baptism records in Fredericksburg, it is concluded that Barbara Smith married John Lott Jr. Thanks to Anne Redish and Cheryl McMullen for pointing this out. John Lott Jr and Barbara Smith had these children: Peter 1798, Jacob, 1801, John 1808, Andrew 1811 and Charles 1814. LUTHERAN and other RECORDS There is a ‘younger’ woman listed in Lutheran Records (Anglican Diocese Kingston) as “et ux. Mar. Barbara” which may be Margaret Barbara Smith/Schmidt since she (too?) is later known as Peggy? on land records, listed as wife of John Lott, with Births of children Peter Lott in 1798 and Jacob Lott in 1801. Later children are in McDowell, John 1808, Andrew 1811, Charles 1814. There may be other children. [signed] Adam H Meyers [13b] Crown Land Department Toronto 29 Nov 1850 The statements made in the petition are correct, the petition of Barbara Lott and the papers in support of her claim as the daughter of Jacob Smith an UE loyalist were filed in the Department before the expiration of the time prescribed by the provisions of the Land Act but they have been lost or mislaid either here or in the office of the Inspector General and cannot after the most diligent search be found. That they were of a satisfactory character may be inferred from the fact that the sister of Barbara Lott, Mary Stickle, has lately received scrip as the daughter of Jacob Smith and privileged as such by the Deputy Inspector General and the former has never received any land, order for land or scrip it is recommended that the usual grant be made to her assignee. | 10. CATHERINE ROGGE, DAUGHTER OF JOHN LOTT SR Catherine Lott would have been born before 1796 in order to be 21 years of age by 1817. The 1834 petition is curious. Is this the same woman? Why does she not petition as a widow? The 1817 petition was granted - did she not claim her land grant? In 1834, George Finkle is a witness and he is the father of Eve Finkle, the wife of John Lott Sr. In 1834 Catherine is about 40 years old so born about 1794. I suspect these are the same woman but there is room for wondering. | 11. PETITION AND WILL OF PHILIP LOTT AND SON JONAS There is no petition for Philip Lott. Any relationship between John Lott Senior and Philip Lott is unknown at this time. On 28 Jan 1811, Philip Lott bought the west half of lot 12, concession 1, Sidney from David Simmons, 160 acres more or less [Book B, indenture 174]. I have looked for Philip Lott's earlier farm but not found it in Sidney. Philip Lott had at least three children: Jonas, John and Elizabeth. There is no record showing that Philip Lott is a Loyalist. PHILIP LOTT WILL 12 Jan 1813, I Philip Lott of Sydney, Yeoman, being very sick and weak in body ....... to be buried in a decent Christian burial .... First, I give and bequeath to Elizabeth my dearly beloved wife one third part of all my estate. Also I give to my son Jonas Lott, whom I constitute my executor, to have what remains of Elizabeth, my wife, upon her decease. Also give to my daughter Elizabeth Lott a comfortable maintenance provided she remain single, upon marriage receive two good milk cows and one third part of all household goods.
