Pioneering Families of the Bay or Quinte

Why I am interested in this family
My autosomal DNA results show I have a connection to Hogle descendants and I have not figured out how. This research is intended to better understand the family. I have a Non Paternal Event in my DNA record and the Hogle descendants may fit into that mystery. Capt John Hogle was killed at the Battle of Bennington in 1777 and his wife and three surviving sons settled in the Quinte area.

Having done this research, I conclude my connection is via descendants of Francis Hogle through a shared Meyers line.

1. OVERVIEW
Dr. H. C. Burleigh was a researcher in the 1950's to 70's and he collected and recorded excellent information about early families mostly with a Loyalist connection. His Fonds is on line at Queens University. Burleigh has two folders titled: Hogle and Hogle/Lake. They are filled with excellent data and are referred to often below with page numbers noted. To top it off, Burleigh was a Hogle descendant.

Capt. John Hogle, the progenitor of the Quinte area Hogle family, joined under General Burgoyne and was killed at the Battle of Bennington in August 1777. His widow was Elizabeth Lake, a daughter of John Lake and Margaret Snyder. The parents of Capt John Hogle are discussed in Burleigh [pages 2, 16]

The knowledge that Elizabeth Lake is the wife of Capt John Hogle comes from her detailed Loyalist Claim made in 1787 which is transcribed below. Note that her three surviving sons are under the care of "James Perrot - he married an Aunt of theirs." James Parrot/Perrot married Mary Lake the sister of Elizabeth Lake or Leake, widow of John Hogle. See this web page on her brother Nicholas Lake UE who settled in Sidney Tp which has a full account of their parents.

Capt John Hogle and Elizabeth Lake had five sons. No daughters are named. In the 1787 Loyalist Claim below, they are named as:
  1. John, eldest son as he was first named in his father's will, deceased.
  2. Bastian or Basteyon [also later named Sebastian], the eldest surviving son at 19 years of age, thus born about 1768.
  3. James, 16, born about 1771.
  4. Francis, 14, born about 1773
  5. Benjamin, age not stated, deceased.
Each of the surviving three sons will be detailed in their respective sections below.

Because Capt John Hogle did not survive the Revolution he was not considered a Loyalist. The three sons were quite young and it is pretty clear that they did not serve in the any Loyalist Regiments though there is some confusion. Consider that Sebastian was 19 in 1787 and thus about 9 in 1777 when his father was killed.

However the three sons were given land in Ernestown and the widow Elizabeth received 600 acres. In 1790 Sebastian and James petition for more land and Bastian mentions that his father had been killed at Bennington and that his mother had received 600 acres "in Right of his father" and hoped that 400 more acres would be granted to equal that of other Captains. Sebastian and James, being older, were placed on the UE List but suspended from it in 1802. In 1790, Francis also petitions as a settler as his name was not on the list and it appears that he had arrived in Upper Canada about this time. In 1811 after another petition by Sebastian, Elizabeth is placed on the UE list and Bastian is recognized as a SUE explaining why he and James were expunged from the list in 1802.

In Oct 1842, James Hogle, a son of Sebastian, petitions as a SUE for 200 acres. This is followed in Dec 1842 by a number of petitions of the children of Sebastian (2 daughters), James Sr (2 sons) and Francis (9 of his children) - the three brothers. These 13 sons and daughters of the original brothers are all granted 200 acres as SUE and DUE's on 4 Jun 1850. This means that in effect the three brothers had been reinstated on the UE List.

The three brothers are deceased before the 1851 census. Burleigh transcribes the contents of two family Bibles and two wills and these are helpful to reconstruct the families. The next generation also are hard to find. When the Archives opens after Covid-19 a search will made for more wills in the land records.

There are likely some errors in this work and comments from researchers are welcome.

Regarding the Loyalist Lists: the so called "Rose List" below names only Bastian and James. The Francis Jr is the son of Capt Francis Hogle Sr and he lived in Quebec, not Ernestown. The second list is the one maintained the UELAC and Bastian, James and Elizabeth are named. A case could be made that Francis Hogle of Sidney should be accepted as a Loyalist given that 9 of his children received land as children of a Loyalist.

3. WIDOW, ELIZABETH HOGLE

Elizabeth Hogle one of the women named in the above return made by John Younglove Esqr appeared before the Board and as a reason that her husband was killed at the Battle of Bennington and the same being certified to us by sundry well affected inhabitants of this County and that the said Elizabeth Hogle has since the going away of her husband behaved herself in a becoming manner
It is therefore resolved that a permit be granted to the said Elizabeth Hogle for the above purpose.

Who is this Anna Hogle? Sebastian Hogle and Amy Cadman have a daugther Anna in 1800 but she marries John Hess. She is not likely a sister of Sebastian as she does not apply for land as a daughter of Capt John Hogle and Elizabeth Lake.

[2k] 11 Oct 1842 James Hogle, of Ernestown son of Bastian Hogle petitions as SUE
[2f-2g] 16 Dec 1842, Belleville, Daniel McDonald of Murray Loyalist was acquainted the late Francis Hogle formerly of Ernestown and late of Sidney and also with the late Bastian Hogle and James Hogle of Ernestown all UE Loyalists and they was soldiers in the Loyal Rangers and came into this province in 1783 or 1784 and settled in Ernestown. That Francis Hogle if living would be upwards of 80, Bastian about 80 and James between 75 and 80.
[footnote] ... list... of discharged troops & soldiers under Capt Ross it will be found that the troops Hogle was among them and are of course fully entitled to be upon the UE list. Their mother now being upon the UE list in lieu of the late Capt Hogle, who was killed in the War has nothing to do with the present claimant who was soldier .... Their father being a Captain and having been killed surely is no objection to his sons being entitled if they served.
[2h] 8 Dec 1842 The names of petitioners father Bastian Hogle and uncles James and Francis were inserted on the UE list but suspended. The name of their mother Elizabeth Hogle widow of Capt John Hogle was inserted therein by OC 12 Feb 1811. SGO
[2i] 11 Jan 1843, Thomas Parke of the SGO reports that Bastian, Francis and James were granted by OC 20 Jun 1797 each 600 acres. It goes on to outline the lots granted.
[2j] 26 Jan 1843 The committee found that petitioner could not be considered as a UE Loyalist and that he accepted land in another capacity his children are therefore not entitled. The petitioners father was suspended form the UE List in 1802

7. CAPT FRANCIS HOGEL

1787 Loyalist Claim
There is an older Capt Francis Hogel [sic] who makes a Loyalist Claim in 1787 at Montreal that he raised about 50 men near Albany and joined Burgoyne. Image 348 below states that he was born in Albany and bought land there in 1771 so he is unlikely to be a brother of Capt John Hogle. On 24 Oct 1789 at Montreal this same Francis Hogel is granted a claim valued at £801 New York currency, £501 GB. Note as well that he signs his name Hogel and not Hogle.
