| Pioneers
of the Bay of Quinte Jane Haviland (1766 - 1851) was born in South Hempstead, Long Island and died in Hallowell and I am a direct descendant of hers. She married Robert Hubbs, probably in Long Island, before coming, to Upper Canada. Identifying her parents has been a challenge. Based on circumstantial evidence, I have concluded she is the sister of John Haviland "of Adolphustown and Hallowell" and Cramahe. |

1. OVERVIEW Identifying the parents of Jane Haviland is not yet fully resolved but things are getting closer. There are two key documents that help to identify her parents. The first is the 1904 work by Albert C. Bowerman where he identifies the second wife of Robert Hubbs as "Jean Haviland born 2 nd Nov. 1766, in Queens Co. L.I. dau. of - - - - Haviland and his wife Jemima Hall. (Jean Haviland had a brother Benjamin)." The name "Jean" is a typo as elsewhere in the document A.C. Bowerman identifies her as Jane Haviland. [Source: From A.C. Bowerman 1904 - image 150] The second key document is the 1791 will of her grandfather, Benjamin Hall. In it, he identifies Jane Hubbs as his granddaughter and Benjamin Hubbs and Robert Hubbs as his grandchildren. A full transcription is below. Benjamin identifies 8 of his children by name. However Jemima is not identified as one of his children nor is the mother of Jane identified.
Therefore we have to ask, do we trust that A.C. Bowerman got it right in identifying "Jemima Hall" as mother of Jane? "Yes" is my answer. See this web page about Albert Bowerman. Albert was 1 year old when Jane died. In the 1890's, when he was collecting his vast genealogical information of the families in the Hallowell area, he would have asked family members who knew Jane first hand. It is my assertion that Jemima Hall is the mother of Jane and that she was deceased by 1791 when her father Benjamin Hall wrote his will and thus did not mention her. No marriage record has yet been found for Jemima Hall and and an unknown Haviland man. Many secondary genealogies have Phebe Llewellin as the wife of this Benjamin Hall. They were married in 1727 at St George's Church, South Hempstead and at this point it is asumed this is correct. She predeceased Benjamin, given that no wife is named in the will. One will find genealogies that state that Jerusha Hall is the mother of Jane Haviland who married Robert Hubbs. This is an error that seems often repeated. Note that the above will identifies two granddaughters as the daughters of Jerusha. Jerusha married Joseph Haviland and they had a daughter named Jane who married Jacob Smith. See the notes below for more information. Benjamin is a very common surname in the Haviland family. Jane Haviland and Robert Hubbs named their first two sons Benjamin and Robert which may be to honour their fathers respectively. If so, then Jane's father was a Benjamin Haviland. Jane is not to be found in the Canadian Haviland Family Genealogy by Eleanor Chapin, Hurley Printing, Brantford Ontario, 1991. Jane's parents are not identified in the famous The Haviland Genealogy, by Josephine Frost, Lyons Genealogical Co., 1914, reprint Higginson Books. All the Benjamins described by Frost do not fit what we know of Jane, though the "missing" Benjamin referred to by Frost on pp 55-6 might be a candidate for Jane's father. GRANDFATHER - BENJAMIN HALL MARRIAGE July 9, 1727, Benjamin Hall & Phebe Llewellin Records of St George's Church, Hempstead, Long Island, The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record (NYGBR), Jan, 1880, Vol 11, p. 134, see on Google Books. 1791 WILL I Benjamin Hall of South Hempstead in Queens County and State of New York do on this second day of June in the year of our lord 1791 make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following Viz. First I order all my just and lawful debts and necessary expenses to be paid in a reasonable time after my decease. I give unto by daughter Mary one bed one blanket and one sheet. I also give unto my grand daughter Phoebe Petit my cupboard then I give all the remainder of my household furniture to be equally divided between my daughters, Hannah, Catharine and Mary and my grand daughter Jane Hubbs and one equal share to my granddaughters Hannah Haviland and Jane Haviland (The issue of my daughter Jerusha). And in case they cannot agree to divide the same, then in such case I order my executor herein named to sell the same and divide the amount amongst them accordingly. I also give unto my son Joseph’s daughters, viz. Sarah, Phoebe and Mary unto each and every of them sum of 6 pounds to them their heirs or assigns. I also give unto my said two grand daughters Hannah Haviland and Jane Haviland to each of them the sum of 2 pounds 10 shillings. I also give unto my daughter Sarah the sum of 2 pounds. I also give unto my son Benjamin Hall the sum of 80 pounds to him or his heirs. Then I give all the remainder of my estate not above disposed of ( except my waring apparels) to be equally divided between my son Benjamin Hall and daughters Hannah, Catherine and Mary and the use of one equal share thereof to be paid unto my granddaughter Jane Hubbs for seven years and then the said share to be paid unto her son Benjamin after giving him reasonable schooling out of the same and in case he should die before he should receive the same then to be given to his brother Robert. I also give unto my son Benjamin Hall all my waring apparels. Lastly I constitute and appoint my Friends Joseph Hall and John Hall executors of this my last will and testament. Impowering them and each of them to fulfill the same and every article herein contained . ITEM 53 Identifies that Jerusha Hall marr. Joseph Haviland, June 25, 1775; at St. George's Episcopal Church, Hempstead. Of 5 children, their dau. JANE HAVILAND was bap. November 01, 1786, in Hempstead. It also states that she later marr. Jacob Smith at the Presbyterian Ch., Jamaica, Dec. 14, 1801. ITEM 54 Identifies a second Jane Haviland, sister of Joseph (53), who was baptised in Hempstead, Sept 18, 1743; and marr. Sylvanus Smith, Feb 05, 1756. Josephine Frost identifies that Joseph (53), and Jane Haviland (54) were the children of Benjamin and Jane (Smith) Haviland, the early Dutch family refered to at St. Georges Church. This couple was married in 1775 and did have a daughter named Jane in 1786 who married Jacob Smith. Therefore these are not her parents. WILL OF JANE HUBBS Copy of the 1850 will of Jane Hubbs, widow of Robert Hubbs, Pioneer I widow Jane Hubbs of the Township of Hallowell County of Prince Edward and Province of Canada, being of a sound mind Memory and understanding make and ordain this my last will and Testament on the twenty-fourth day of April in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and fifty in manner following, that is to say: First I order and empower my executors hereinafter to be named to pay all my funeral expenses and pay for a grave stone to put to my grave and also a good stone to put to Anny Hubbs deceased's grave. Secondly I will and bequeath to William Hubbs, Benjamin Hubbs, Robert Hubbs, Amos Hubbs, Haviland Hubbs and Adam Hubbs, five dollars each in gold. That I will and bequeath to my three daughters, Jemima Saylor, Hannah Vancleaf and Sarah Southard all my wearing apparel bed and bedding to be equally divided between my three daughters heretofore named. I also will and bequeath to my daughter Hannah Vancleaf a large blue chest. Fourth, it is my will that after my funeral charges are paid and the before named legacies settled that the residue if any remaining shall be equally divided amongst my children heretofore named including my step-son William Hubbs, and lastly I constitute and appoint Benjamin Hubbs, Archelaus Southard my executors to carry this my last will and Testament into effect according to the true intent and meaning of the same. Art writes, "The original still existed when this was written. I have seen copies of the original." Note: No will has been found in the Land Registers or Surrogate Court Records at the AO. DEATH - 1851 CENSUS This note is entered under Charles Saylor - "female, 85 years old died of old age". This most certainly is a reference to the death of Jane, mother in law, who must have been living with them. Even though she died in December, Calvin Pier, enumerator, makes note of being snow bound and delayed in completeing the census, so he likely came by after her death date. PLBQ STORY NO CONNECTION TO NOVA SCOTIA "His [Robert Hubbs] wife was Jane Haviland, a member of the family from whom has since descended the well-know, Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia .... the Havilands were of Dutch origin ....". Source: Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, 1904, p. 403 Research suggests that the man referred to is likely Thomas Heath Haviland, Q.C. who was Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island (not Nova Scotia) from 1879 to 1884. Thomas Heath Haviland was born in Charlottetown in 1822 and was the son of the Thomas Heath Haviland, of the same name, born 1797 in England, who emigrated to PEI in 1815. Thomas [the younger] was a member of the Quebec conference in 1864 and the later conference in PEI that settled the terms of Confederation of Canada in 1867. So what do we make of this? Jane was born in 1766 on Long Island long before Thomas Heath Haviland [senior] arrived from England. Likely the author of the account in PLBQ was making a general connection to the 'Haviland name' that would have been well known in the story of Canadian confederation. There is no evidence of a close connection between these two family lines. Also, PLBQ (p 403) states that, "In a very old Bible, now in the possession of Mrs. David B. Bowerman, it is recorded that Jane Haviland had a brother Benjamin." It goes on in the next sentence to mention John Haviland as if he is the brother referred to. I think John is her brother. |

6. SOME DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN HALL This lineage is based on the will of Benjamin Hall and a few on line genealogies and the work of A.C. Bowerman who named Jemima Hall as the mother of Jane Haviland.. Generation 1 1. BENJAMIN1 HALL . He died between 1791-1793. He married Phebe Llewellin on 09 Jul 1727 in St George's Ch, South Hempstead, Queens, LI, NY. Benjamin Hall and Phebe Llewellin had the following children: 2. i. JEMIMA2 HALL. She married Haviland on 25 Jun 1775 in Hempstead, Queens, New York. ii. MARY HALL. iii. HANNAH HALL. iv. CATHERINE HALL. v. SARAH HALL was born about 1732. She died on 04 Sep 1822. She married George Weekes on 20 Feb 1758. vi. BENJAMIN HALL. 3. vii. JERUSHA HALL. Hallowell, Prince Edward, Ontario, Canada. She married Robert Hubbs, son of
Robert Hubbs on 25 Nov 1782 in Hempstead, NY State. He was born on 10 May 1753
in Long Island, NY. He died on 03 Mar 1827 in Hallowell, Prince Edward,
Ontario, Canada. 3.
JERUSHA2 HALL (Benjamin1).
She married Joseph Haviland, son of Benjamin Haviland and Jane Smith on
25 Jun 1775 in St Georges Church, Hempstead, Nassau, NY. Joseph
