of the Bay of Quinte Judging from early petitions, Dean was a common surname in Upper Canada from Niagara to Kingston. This study will focus on those Deans that are found in early Quinte records. Daniel M Dean and Isaac Dean were early pioneers to the area and there appear to be a few others. It is not known if they are closely related. My thanks to researchers Bonny Campbell and Olive Hoffman who have done a lot of the research and are willing to share their work on this page. I have added some details of the earliest petitions and there are many more later ones that likely would define children and relationships. The actual grants in the Land Books were not checked. | 2. Daniel Matthew Dean Daniel M Dean does not petition for land as a loyalist and neither do his children so he can be considered an early settler. He appears in the record as early as 1802 in Murray and later in Sidney Township and his wife and children are named in the census data below. It is thought that the Daniel M Dean and Daniel Mathew Dean who later moved to Middlesex County are the same person. One of his children married a Perry who was an established early family in Sidney Township. BORN Daniel M. Dean, b. After talking over the whole situation with his family, he concluded that he would ask the old man Daniel Dean how he would like to exchange his tow-hundred acre farm, lot 22, concession 11, for the farm of two hundred acres near St. Thomas. He said he would if the farm suited him. In a few days they went up to Southwold to see the farm, Mr. Dean taking his farmer with him. They were well pleased with the farm and country, five miles northwest from St. Thomas. When they came back they exchanged farms at once. 3. Isaac Dean Isaac Dean 1787 - 1853, was in Colonel Bleeker's Hasting Militia with his sons Jabez and Adam in 1834 in Shannonville. He was also in the 1818 Hastings Militia. He can then be found in the Hamilton Township assessments as Isaac Deen, Ben, Beens (all different combinations). In Hamilton Township, there was an Adam Acker who also has about 4 spellings throughout those early assessments. His daughter Elizeran is the Eliza Ann Dean was born 1810 and married James Lake who is a witnesses of Isaac's will. A son of Adam Acker named Jacob with his wife Rebekah (buried in Hogle Cemetery) had relocated to Sidney Township as well as Jabez Smith Deen who is buried in Thomasburg Cemetery and also Adam Achre(Acker) Dean. However, Jabez born 1813 was living with Mariah Clare on the 1881 census in Hungerford and he was a carpenter that never married according to his death record. Gaius Dean 1798 and later, Haldimand Township (Cobourg area) Haldimand, 2 Feb 1798, Gaius Dean, that on 1 Oct 1796 was in possession of Lot 20, Broken Front of Haldimand and has taken the oath of allegiance and returned as a settler by Mr Joseph Keeler who acted as agent for said town and has made improvments prays to grant the said lot to him. There is a book written about this family called the Dean Family of Hamilton Township. They seem to be related to the Taunton, Massachussetts Dean family and most of Cobourg was their land at one time. Most moved to Michigan and I believe Indiana. Source: Bonny Campbell MOODIE STORY I reviewed Gene Taylor's entry re Noah Dean and suspected that he had no knowledge of these baptisms so I forwarded the info to him. He was quite pleased and Mary Dean , daughter of Noah and Libby ( probably Liddy for Lydia Warner or Warriner) supports his theory that Chester Hatch's wife Mary Warren Dean was the daughter of Noah Dean and Lydia Warren or Warriner. Also, I reviewed the book on Our Roots called Roughing in the Woods by Susannah Moodie. There are references to Mrs. D___ on pages 235 to 237 and Mr. D------ on pages 239 to 260 re their relocation from Cobourg area to Drouro Twp. An article in the Cobourg Star newspaper on 16 Aug 1831 page 5-6 suspected that Mrs. D--- was the wife of Samuel or Weston Dean and it was probably Samuel Corban or Corbin Dean that made the difficult winter journery to safely transport the Moodie family to their new home in Drouro Twp. Susannah Moodie's book provided much detail re the area around Peterboro at the time and that the Dean family had a black servant. Source: West Lake Monthly Meeting (Orthodox) 1828 - 1849, O-10-1, Ameliasburgh, 15 8th month 1839, p 228 STORY Huldah lists her birthplace as Canada, in the family Bible which she gave to her son, William G. Allen. Huldah was quite a character. She out-lived three husbands. I believe her first husband might have been Canadian. Her second husband, William Allen, was 10 years her junior, but he died very young. According to a newspaper article from the late 1800's, Huldah was the first white women to cross the Mississippi by house ferry in 1832. I believe she met her last husband, Richard Freeborn, in Red Wing, Minnesota. His family, the Freeborns, were somewhat famous pioneers in the Minnesota area and county is named for them. Huldah was born in Canada and I think married for the first time in Canada to a man named Dudley. I think this because she had a daughter by her first marriage, who crossed the Mississippi to Iowa with her, named Emily M. Dudley. I do know that Gaius Dean was Huldah's father because there were records that my father had on Gaius' Revolutionary War exploits. Source: Information from Julie Clark. Source: email from Peter Johnson, Dec 17, 2007 Jim Chase has been trying to find the father of his Paul Dean born 1826 that married Harriet Rowe and they lived in Shannonville, Tyendinaga, Hastings County, Ontario. If this marriage is correct, I believe that James Dean of 1797 married a second time to Margaret German so his son Amos Dean would have been born to an unknown first wife. Amos Dean born around 1826 listed his parents as James Dean and Margaret Gorman on record but I think that it might be German. Margaret German was born around 1803 according to census and she was widowed living with her son Amos Dean who relocated to Tiny, Simcoe County Ontario. There was a William R German born around 1806 in Prince Edward County that lived in Murray Township, Northumberland County, As his year of birth was close to that of Margaret German, I searched to find the parents of William R German. If an online tree is correct, they were Christopher German and Margaret Ruttan and they also list a Margaret as one of the daughters. Source: email Bonny Campbell, May 25, 2010 I am a looking for the parents of my ancestor, James Dean (b. Oct. 23, 1801 in N.Y.). He married first Margaret German (b. 1805 to John German Jr. and Elizabeth Vandenbergh). James and Margaret had three children in Hastings County, Amos Dean (1826-1911), Eliza Ann Dean (1830-1920) who married Michael Green (son of Ebenezer Green and Mary Bartley), and Amanda Mahala Dean (1835-1898). Soon after the birth of the third child, James and Margaret divorced. James then married Dorothy Kimmerly and had several more children. They eventually came to Bay County, Michigan where James Dean was an Inn Keeper. Margaret German Dean remarried later to a Hiram Landy (or Sandy). She appears again in a census living with her son Amos Dean which lists her as a widow. She is listed as Dean in this census (I am assuming the census taker just gave her the name of the head of the household). She was a widow of Hiram Landy (or Sandy) at this time, not James Dean, who was alive and well living in Michigan. Three of Elizabeth Leavens siblings (Joseph, Benjamin and Catherine) settled in Prince Edward County and it is possible that the Dean's did as well. The above Daniel and Elizabeth had children named Daniel Dean and Mary (Polly) who married a Young. It is likely that the Daniel Dean named in the 1797 Nine Partner minutes is this same person and he would have travelled to Adolphustown to meet the settlers who wished to establish a meeting at Adolphustown. Maybe at this time he considered bringing his family to Canada. Bonny Campbell writes; "I emailed the individual doing Dutchess County Family Research Books and he stated that Daniel Dean that married Elizabeth Leavens died in 1830 in Dutchess County." Perez's brother Miel ( also seen as Mial) was born 14 Feb 1768 in North Adams, Berkshire, Ma and married Sara Stafford that was born in Plainfield , Sullivan, Ma. Jacob Dean, Dutchess County, NY JACOB DEANE 1776 NY “Lieutenant William B Alger sworn an affidavit that Jacob Deane in Charlotte Precinct, Nine Partners refused the paper emission of the Continental Congress as payment of a parcel of Deer's leather. November 8, 1776 Whereas it appears clearly to this Committee that Jacob Deane, Solomon Haight and Solomon Eltinger are notoreiously disaffected to the American cause, which they have evinced by refusing to receive in payment the Continental currency, and endeavouring to depreciate the same: Interesting that this Jacob Dean was in Nine Partners. I found that it was interesting that a Jacob Dean around the same age as my Isaac married an Elizabeth Mosher, daughter of Philip Mosher and Rhuame Palmer (members of Nine Partners). Obviously this Jacob Dean was born around 1749 so at least one generation older than the Jacob Dean that married Elizabeth Mosher. This meeting taking into consideration the appeal of Echabed Boreman [Ichabod Bowerman] from the judgement of this meeting appoints the following Friends to attend the next Quarterly Meeting with the minutes and papers relating thereto and speak to it as need shall require; viz. Izrael Titus - Samuel Dorland - Paul Hoag - Edward Palmer - Jacob Dean - Samuel Hallock'. Source: Oswego Preparative Meeting, [Quaker], 1779, page 11, AC Bowerman 1916 JACOB DEAN of NY, a Thurlow connection My 3rd great grandmother was Rachel Dean who married Stephen Lawrence who came to Thurlow in the late 1790s from Dutchess County. Rachel was the daughter of Jacob Dean and she was mentioned in his will dated 3 February 1795 as were her siblings. Rachel died prior to Stephen making his will in 1816 and passing away at Thurlow on 30 June, 1821. Stephen appears to have been well off as he purchased 400 acres from John Fairman being Lots 9 and 10 plus the broken front on the Bay of Quinte. His brother Cornelius arrived in the area in 1800 and he purchased 1240 acres of land in Sidney Township from John Ferguson and his wife Magdalen (nee Johnson) of Kingston for 750 pounds. Stephen's sister Polly came to Canada with her husband Sam Badgley and family in 1789 and other Lawrence family members arrived with Stephen in the 1790s. I am not aware of Jacob Dean coming to Canada. It appears that Stephen Lawrence was accompanied to Canada with the families of Daniel Lawrence, Stephen and Lawrence Halstead. Stephen Halstead was married to Stephen Lawrence's daughter Parmela. Stephen and Lawrence Halstead were brothers and their mother Martha Lawrence was a sister of Stephen Lawrence and was married to Thomas Halstead 1735-1806. Stephen Lawrence was a Baptist minister as well as a farmer according to his daughter Amelia and she also states that her grandfather, likely Jacob Lawrence, was very well off. Stephen had his land confiscated however we are not aware of the reason as most Dutchess records from this period were destroyed in a fire of the NY Archives in 1911.
