Family story/lore:
According to my father's baby book, John Thomas Moore was
orphaned at an early age, with his father dying during the Civil War and his
mother dying when he was age 5. John Thomas Moore was said to be a
"large plantation owner and horse trader, owning much of the land that is
now Vernon, AL" (Lamar County). We have not yet obtained confirmation
of any of this information, but are working on it. I started my
Moore search only knowing the name of my great-grandmother, Mary Ida Moore,
oldest daughter of J.T. Moore, but was aware that there were about 14 children
of J.T. and his wife, Sarah Tucker Sanders. As I found this family in the
census records of Lamar County, AL, I learned the names of all 15 of
their children. I have been able to learn via the census records that John
Thomas Moore was born in South Carolina, as were both of his parents. I
haven't yet found him in SC yet. I have created what I call a
"timeline" of the major events in the life of John Thomas Moore.
I have included events that "may" have been a part of his life for
clarity - and so that perhaps others might be able to connect in or offer
assistance in some way.
On a trip last
summer (1999), I visited
a cemetery (Shiloh Methodist Church, a/k/a "Pinhook") in Hightogy, AL (Lamar County), where I was told to look
for my Robertson line. I had also been told to travel further down that
same road to a smaller cemetery where additional Robertsons were supposed to be
found. What I found instead are what I think may be clues to the parentage
of John Thomas Moore. Photo was taken from the road - Moore graves are "chalked" for
easier reading. At this very small cemetery next to
Mt.
Zion Baptist Church, I found (all of the following stones are identical and are
in order, from the road):
Edey, son of J.T. and S.T.
Moore, born December 23, 1892 died October 22, 1898 (next 3 not pictured right now)
|
Lockey A., daughter of J.T. and S.T. Moore, born Mar. 1, 1879, died
Nov.
22, 1890 |
|
Sidney P., son of J.T. and S.T. Moore, born May 12, 1874, died June 3,
1883 |
|
Unknown Moore (stone was broken, could only read "Moore"), born 1846, died 1856 |
Souson Moore, wife of James Moore, born 1813, died 1857
James Moore, son of J. and A. Moore, born 1807, died 1858
Anie Moore, wife of John Moore S.R., born 1784, died 1878
My math tells me that it is possible that "Souson" Moore and James
Moore could easily be the parents of John Thomas Moore, but that is speculation
at this point. As is the other idea that Anie could be the grandmother???
The church has no info on these people, per a deacon of the church.
But I must ask, why are the stones on all the seven folks at this cemetery
identical and are all Moores, unless they are related in some fashion????
If anyone has any information about this Moore line, please send email to Allison

2000 UPDATE: A kindly person online provided me with information that
she found that BP Wheeler was appointed "master" of John T. Moore, a
minor aged 11, in September, 1858, in Probate Book I (one) of Fayette Co., AL -
this lends credence that Souson and James, both of whom would have been deceased
by sometime in 1858, could have been the parents of John Thomas Moore! email
me if you can add any additional information!
