The man in the photograph is my great-grandfather Roddy Schell STATLER and on his lap is my grandfather Clarence Roddy STATLER.  My guess would be that the photo was taken about 1888.

Clarence had two sisters and no brothers and three daughters.  To use an old genealogy term the branch “daughtered out”.  Put another way there is no potential Y chromosome carrier among Roddy’s descendants.

Roddy S. Statler was born in Somerset County PA 28 March 1858.  Roddy had two brothers: John Ake Statler and Lewis Michael Statler.  His father died when he was less than two years old and his mother moved to Altoona and married Edward McMahan and this husband died young also.  Roddy married Mary Potter of Altoona and worked for the railroad, moving first to Topeka, KS and then after 1900 to Chicago where he died in November of 1925.

Clarence Roddy Statler was born 1 July 1887 in Topeka and married to Leah Hoke in 1907 in Chicago.  They moved to California in 1911.  So this branch moved across the continent in two generations.  Clarence worked for the Pacific Fruit Exchange (part of Southern Pacific RR) as an insurance adjuster.
