Notes:

The MICHAEL spelling was adopted in America.

Jacob listed his children born of his first wife in a will he wrote in 1769.  They are listed by middle name as the custom is to give the first name as a “saint’s name” thus all the Johann” something” and Maria “something” names.  The will lists the children in the order above omitting the two which died young.  He declared that he had left those children well provided for, so willed them a shilling a piece.

The Michel/Michael family and the Oberthier/Oberdeer family were close in Germany.  Ludwig was a witness at the baptism of Lewis (Johann Ludwig) Michel/Michael a few months before he married Wendel’s sister.

The last record of Wendel Michel in Wallhalben is the baptism of Lewis (Johann Ludwig) January of 1762, and the last mention of Ludwig Oberthier is his marriage to Maria Elisabetha Michel in May of 1762.  The first mention of Ludwig Oberthier in York County, PA is in the 1771 tax list.   The first mention of Wendel in York County is the baptism of his daughter Maria Christina Michel in 1772.  The MICHEL spelling was used early York County church records but MICHAEL was the norm.

Lewis is a party to several deeds in York County, PA including one in which he purchased land from Elizabeth Michael, widow.  Some articles written about Lewis state that Elizabeth was the widow of Lewis.  NOT TRUE.  This Elizabeth is the widow of the grandfather of Lewis, so was his step-grandmother.

In an advertisement Lewis is said to have obtained the knowledge (of making survey instruments) from Benjamin Rittenhouse a clockmaker and instrument maker who lived in the Philadelphia area, which indicates that Lewis was apprenticed to him.  The timing is ok, Lewis would have been 21 in 1783 so would been ready to go out on his own at that time.  There is a “Michael Lewis clockmaker” listed in the 1786 tax list for Worcester Township, Montgomery County, PA which is one of the places Benjamin Rittenhouse lived.  If Michael Lewis is really Lewis Michael it certainly indicates an association with Rittenhouse.

Lewis lived in the town of York from 1787 when he advertised in the Carlisle Gazette that he had set up shop in York until 1796 when he was in Hanover.  Beginning in 1799 he and his brother Wendel were doing business together in Baltimore, Maryland.  Lewis sold his interest in their joint real estate to Wendel in 1811.

From1814 until 1826 Lewis was in Air Township, Bedford County PA which is now in Fulton County, probably living in McConnellsburg.

In 1827 Lewis was first taxed in Somerset County, PA and is listed there in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census.  There is an advertisement from

Chillicothe Ohio in 1832 for his instruments but if he lived there he return to PA by 1840.
