Cyndi writes:  "There are many resources available to help people who are new to genealogy.  First you can visit my (i.e., Cyndi's) web site at:

               http://www.CyndisList.com

and proceed to the "How To" category. There are many links there to sites having an abundance of helpful information.  Also, be sure to visit your local LDS Family History Center.  You can find them listed in the yellow pages under Churches.  The volunteers there are wonderful and will point you in the right direction.

In addition, there are four terrific books that I would recommend (these books can be found via your local bookstore or library):

1.  First Steps in Genealogy -- A Beginner's guide to Researching Your Family History, by Desmond Walls Allen.   ISBN 1-55870-489-2.   http://www.oz.net/~markhow/library.htm#firststeps

2.  The Complete Idiot's Guide to Genealogy, by Christine Rose, CG, CGL, FASG & Kay Germain Ingalls, CGRS.  ISBN 0-02-861947-1.  http://www.oz.net/~markhow/library.htm#idiot

3.  UnpuzzlingYour Past: A Basic Guide to Genealogy, 3rd Edition, by Emily Croom.  ISBN 1-55870-396-9.  http://www.oz.net/~markhow/library.htm#croom

4.  Genealogy Starter Kit, 2nd Edition, by William Dollarhide.   ISBN 0-8063-1577-6.     http://www.oz.net/~markhow/library.htm#genstart

For anyone who is new to the Internet, I would like to suggest my own book, which was written after teaching classes for my genealogy society and our local Family History Center. The book began as a handout written for these classes. It is meant to be a resource for anyone who is new to the Internet, but also contains many tips & tricks useful for people who have been online for awhile.

5.  Netting Your Ancestors -- Genealogical Research on the Internet, by Cyndi Howells.  ISBN 0-8063-1546-6.  http://www.CyndisList.com/netting.htm "
