Welcome to my family history website. This page is a work in progress. It represents the suggested ancestral family for Jacob and Cornelius Vller of Ulster County, New York. This ancestry is not proven. If you are just arriving here for the first time then you may wish to start here.
Please Note: This page is intended only as a narrative historical overview of this family. There is additional detailed information available for some of the people presented on this page. To avoid the unnecessary work of double-entering some data, the additional information can be found in the accompanying GEDCOM database. The surname Vller is Germanic in origin. It is sometimes written as Voeller, which, when pronounced with a Germanic accent, would sound to our English ears almost exactly like "Furler" (with the "r" not completely closed). In Old French the word becomes Fouleor or Foleur, and in English it is rendered Fuller. All of these words have the same meaning. Fuller is an occupational surname referring to a dresser of cloth. A fuller (in English), or a Vller (in German), or a foleur (in French), scoured and thickened raw cloth by beating and trampling it with water. Contemporary German speakers tell me that the name has an "Alpine" (i.e. Swiss) sound to it, as opposed to a Low Country sound. Vller researchers claim the origin of the surname comes from the Swiss/German border region.
Variants
The following variants or corruptions of the name Vller/Furler have been found in various records, either from Anglicization or from transcription errors or clerk errors. Researchers are cautioned to look for all these variants: Feller, Foeller, Fuller, Furler, Furlong, Furlough, Furlow, Veller, Vollar, Voeller and Voller.

TO BE ADDED
Jacob Vller is shown to have been born in New York, and married Maria Catharina Ackerman about 1751. The earliest German families settled in this area in the 1720s. Thus Jacob must be among the earliest descendants of one of these early families. The only family whose name is close to theirs in the area is the Veller/Feller family, shown below. Vller is often rendered as Voeller or Foeller and is a cognate of Veller/Feller. Thus the names Vller/Furler/Voeller/Veller/Feller can be considered the same name.
Is is presently suggested that Jacob Veller/Feller (#12 below) is the same person as Jacob Vller/Furler shown as born in Ulster County in 1736, but that his birth date of 1734 is to be preferred. It is also possible that Jacob Veller/Feller (#10 below) may be the same person and that his baptism was recorded twice by a second itinerant preacher. Or the earlier Jacob may have died young and the second Jacob was named after him.
It is believed, but not proven, that Jacob Furler/Vller descends from the Veller/Feller family shown below.

It is suggested that Jacob VELLER/FELLER, shown above as bap 14 MAR 1734 Leenenburg, Greene, NY, is the best candidate so far found to be the Jacob Vller/Voeller/Furler, who married Maria Catharina Ackerman and lived on the estate of Richard Livingston near Kingston, and whose sons came to Canada with Butler's Rangers. Their information can be found on the Furler Family Page.
Jacob Vller is known to have resided on the property of Robert Livingston, on the west side of the Hudson, northwest of Kingston, which is also where the above family lived. In order for Jacob to have been born in that area ca. 1730 then his parents would have had to have been residing there prior to that date. The only family also known to have lived on the Livingston property whose surname comes even close is the above family. Thus it must be that Jacob is descended from this family, either that or he descends from an immigrant for whom absolutely no record at all exists, which seems unlikely.
The Jacob Veller/Feller shown above is recorded as "no further information" and in some genealogies "presumed to have died young". However there is no record of such a young death. I believe he did not die young. If his birth record is accurate then he had his first son about between the ages of 16-18. It was shortly after that time that his his grandparents and many (all?) of his extended family moved to the German Flats at Herkimer. I believe that Jacob either stayed behind because he already had a family, or perhaps was left behind out of shame if his family had begun premaritally. Either way, his family of origin preserved no further information of him and later genealogists took that to mean that he had died.
Organized in 1723. Land given 1730 and 1773. Patentees on South Side, include Mary Ffeller (wife of Nicholas Ffeller). Patentees on North Side include Nicholas Ffeller.
Even before the survey was made it was decided by the Council that each of these persons was to have a hundred acres of land, and the tract extended from Astenrogen on the east twenty-four English miles west, on both sides of the river. These forty-six persons, with their families formed the nucleus of the Herkimer Church, as the forty-six others who obtained lots on the south side made up the congregation of the Fort Herkimer church. At least three acres of the fifty low lands was to be cultivated in three years and the hundred acres was subject to an annual quit rent of two shillings and six pence. Provision was also made for roads.

Nicholas, whose will was proved 9 Feb 1768, lived in Guntersblum, about 15 miles down the Rhine from Worms, Germany. This information can be found in a pamphlet on the Waeger family by Paul W. Prindle.
DEATH (date, place): MARRIAGE: Ancestral Lines Revised 1978 by Carl Boyer III (Orlando Library).
Nicholas Feller was, according to his son's marriage record, from Gunterblum, Hochgraff Lennigrisch Hartenburg, and died no doubt in Burnetsfield (now Herkimer), NY shortly before his will dated 28 May 1734, was proved 9 Feb 1763. Bailey suggests that Nicholas may have had a sister, Anna Catharine, who was dead by 1726, having been the first wife of Jurg Adam Zufelt.
This was a "[plausible explanation for the fact the the Zufelts and Fellers continually acted as sponsors to each other's children [NYRGB, 63:245]. As "Nicolaus Foller" he was among the Palatines in Livingston Manor the winter of 1710-11. Niclaus Feller, of Queensbury, a village in the East Camp of Livingston Manor, was among the Palatine volunteers in the 1711 expedition against the French in Canada. By the next year he was in West Camp, across the Hudson, where a daughter was baptized, and it seems likely he moved to Schoharie, on the Mohawk River, for his daughter Catherine's marriage to Lambert Sternberg, who had moved to Schoharie in 1712, occurred in 1720 and was not recorded in West Camp. On 17 Jan 1723 Nicolas Ffeller was named a grantee to the Burnetsfield Patent. He received lot number 7, including thirty acres of lowland and seventy acres of woodland on the north side of the Mohawk. Mary, his wife, was granted 100 acres of woodland across the river in lot 16. They built their home in the upland portion of the lot north of the river in the area called either Burnetsfield or German Flats. During the French and Indian War the settlement suffered burning and massacre. How this affected the Fellers is not known.
Rosalie Fellows Bailey's genealogy of the Fellows family recounts the family tradition that the line was originally an English one which had fled to Germany for religious reasons. Another tradition stated that they came to America "in their own ship", with their own gold. According to Mary King Fellows (1856-19060), grandmother to Rosalie Fellows Bailey, the former had seen the inventory of shirts and other articles brought over on the Feller/Fellows family ship.

Strange to say the story of the Fort Herkimer Church has not often been told. Doubtless in the nineteenth century there were sketches now and then appearing in the local press of both of the churches, and in the histories of the County of Herkimer one reads considerable about them. In 1886 when Rev. Henry M. Cox was pastor of the church, he preached three historical sermons bearing on its early history, that of the Spinner pastorate, and the ensuing fifty years. There is a copy of the Nicholas Feller will of May 28, 1734, in which the testator bequeaths his church seat to Hans Nicholas Crisman, his son-in-law, but whether it was the church on the north or south side it is impossible to determine by the will. Nicholas Welleven, who sold the acre of land for the church on the south side, was son-in-law of Nicholas Feller, while Nicholas Crisman was a member and pew holder in the German Flatts Church.

The first arrival of the Palatine Germans in New York State was in August 1708 and in the Mohawk Valley as early as 1720, with the advance guard coming to Herkimer in 1722.
Soon after 1722 a blockhouse and a church were erected in Herkimer, the church being on the site of the present Reformed Church. A schoolhouse was erected soon afterward.
Because the population comprised mostly Germans, the area became known as German Flatts. Except for the hardships naturally arising from settling in wilderness territory, the development of the community progressed peacefully until the outbreak of the French and Indian War which was fought for the mastery of the North American continent.
Herkimer at that time was a Palatine village and in the French and Indian War (17541763), it suffered one of the most terrible massacres recorded in the Colonial period. The settlement at Herkimer is the oldest in Herkimer County. The land upon which it is located is what was called The Stone Ridge during the Colonial days. It extended along both sides of the Mohawk River between Frankfort and Little Falls, and included the villages of Herkimer, Mohawk and Ilion. There were 46 lots on each side of the river. It was divided into tracts of 30 acres each. The 30-acre tracts covered the side of the Village of Herkimer. The settlers, thus being provided with land, worked the soil and built a community consisting of five blockhouses. They also enjoyed the privilege of worshipping God in their own way. There were about 30 houses on the present site of the Village of Herkimer. At Fort Herkimer there were about 20 on the south side of the river and eight on the north.
In April 1758, the settlement on the south side of the river near the fort was attacked and about 30 settlers were killed. Captain Nicholas Herkimer was in command of the fort. At the unexpected assault he collected within the fort all the settlers he could gather.
Those of the first generation that came could write their names, but of the first and second generation born here few could. The language became a sad mixture of German, Dutch, English and Indian - the Mohawk Dutch.

= This person has known descendants.
ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:
Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.
Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month. Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.
Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
