The Stewarts of Auchnahard were a cadet branch of the Stewarts of Annat and the Stewarts of Ardvorlich. Please refer to the Ardvorlich and Annat pages for a full introduction. This family was also the leading family of the Stewarts in Glen Finglas. It is essential for researchers of this family to refer to the Stewarts in Glen Finglas page for a full introduction to the Glen Finglas Stewarts.

In the 17th and 18th centuries Glen Finglas was overrun by Stewarts. They were the senior tenants in Glen Finglas and the most prominently represented surname. However, they didn't all come from the same Stewart family. We have identified at least four separate major branches of Stewarts who resided in Glen Finglas during that time period. With so many Stewarts living together, some means of nicknames became necessary in order to differentiate which family was which. The Stewarts who lived in Duart were called the "Duart Stewarts" or just Duart for short. Thus, James Stewart in Duart was referred to in casual conversation as "James Duart."
The Stewart family who ultimately resided in Auchnahard was nicknamed "The Bains of Glenfinglas." "Bain" is an Anglicization of the Gaelic word b�n which means "fair haired." This designation presumably differentiated them from their distant cousins of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie who also resided in Glen Finglas and who were called "Dubh" or "dark haired."
We now continue with the story of the "fair haired" Stewarts in Glen Finglas:

John Buidhe Mor STEWART in Glen Finglas b: ABT 1625 in Annat, Doune,
Perthshire, Scotland as the natural (illegitimate) son of
John Stewart, 2nd of Annat.
Stewarts of the South describes John as: "John Stewart of Annat had a
natural son called Iain Buigh mor. He give him a farm in Glenfinglas. His
descendants are now called Bains."
John was called "Iain Buidhe Mor" or "Big John of the Yellow Hair" although the
alternative spelling in Stewarts of the South of "Buigh" would mean "Big
John the Effeminate" (unlikely); the former is preferred. This John is recorded
in The Ardvorlich History as the earliest verifiable ancestor of the
Stewarts in Glenfinglas and referenced in "1663 John S. in Glenfinglas
Test[ament] (Auchnahard), James S., his lawful son. Another James S. married his
daughter. Another daughter married Walter S. in Auchinferron (Gartnafueran?) --
DCR [Dunblane Commissariat Records]" This would suggest that John died in 1663.
The fact that John Buidhe Mor's grandson, John Ban Mor had a daughter who
married Walter Stewart in Gartnafuaran and another daughter who married James
Stewart in in Duart suggests that the reference is confused and is referring to
the later John Ban Mor. The Annat Tree refers to this John as "John Dow Stewart in
Glenfinglas, natural son". However John Dow Stewart, the natural son, actually
refers to John Dubh Beag Stewart the natural son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glen
Finglas. John Dubh Beag Stewart was responsible for the Clearing of Glen
Finglas. Several generations of the Glenbucke Stewarts were referred to as "Dubh"
("Black"), meaning "dark-haired", whereas this John and his descendants were
referred to as "Bain", the "Fair-Haired Stewart", presumably to differentiate
them from their Glenbuckie cousins. The Annat Tree has confused the two
Johns. The Ardvorlich History says that the earliest
verifiable ancestor of this family was "John Bhuie Stewart" who was "first in the Glen" and was
"preceded by a John or twa".
Stewarts of the South, Ardvorlich Section IX - "The Bains of Glenfinglas"
gives the origins of this branch as: "John Stewart of Annat had a natural
son called Iain Buigh mor. He give him
a farm in Glenfinglas. His descendants
are now called Bains." The accounting of the Bains in Stewarts of
the South matches with the
accounting of the Glenfinglas Stewarts in The Ardvorlich History. Thus, we
follow Stewarts of the South and suggest that John Buidhe Mor Stewart was a natural son of John
Stewart of Annat. Chronology would suggest that the John of
Annat in question would have to be
John Stewart, 2nd of Annat. Sometime around 1620, following the clearing of Glenfinglas, the Annat family
complained to James Beag Stewart, 2nd of Ardvorlich, after he received a
beneficial tack of Glenfinglas and portioned it among the principal branches of
the Baldorran Stewarts, but left out the Annat family. Chronology makes it
likely that it was Alexander Stewart, 1st of Annat, who complained about being
left out of the Glenfinglas tack. The Annat family were then given a one-eighth
share of Glenfinglas. By later accountings, it would appear that their portion
was Auchnahard. However, Mrs Stewart of Milton's Account says that this family
resided first in Duart, then in Grodich, and only after 1750 did they move to
Auchnahard, so we cannot be certain where in Glen Finglas this family began. The Ardvorlich History claims that the later John Buidhe Mor was
preceded by "a John or two". It seems likely that the Annat portion of Glen
Finglas probably went first to John Stewart, future 2nd Laird of Annat, while
Alexander was still alive, then John, future 2nd of Annat, likely held the
property until his father's death, at which point he would have inherited the
principal estate of Annat, to become John Stewart, 2nd of Annat, which would be
when his natural son, John Buidhe Mor probably took possession of the tack in
Glenfinglas. John's death date of 1663 comes from The Annat Tree submitted to the
IGI. We presently have no further reference for this death date.
John Buidhe Mor was the father of:
John STEWART b: ABT 1657 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander,
Perthshire, Scotland. No record of John's existence has been found. He
is suggested by onomastics only. He may be identical with the "Son" Stewart,
shown here as his un-named brother.
James STEWART in Glen Finglas b: ABT 1660 in Auchnahard,
Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
Son STEWART b: ABT 1662 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander,
Perthshire, Scotland.
Walter STEWART in Dunan b: ABT 1710 in Callander, Perthshire,
Scotland. Walter was the patriarch of Line 2 of the Bains of
Glenfinglas. Walter and his descendants are presented further below.
James STEWART in Glen Finglas b: ABT 1660 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas,
Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as the son of John Buidhe Mor Stewart, in Glen
Finglas, shown just above. James is recorded in The Ardvorlich History as having
succeeded his his father in Auchnahard. Mrs Stewart of Milton (a
gr-gr-granddaughter) contradicts this saying that these Stewarts were in Grodich
prior to 1750 and in Duart before that. She also mentions an Alexander in Auchnahard in 1707 who left Glen
Finglas about 1744-1748 (who may or may not have been from this family.)
Thus we cannot be certain exactly where in Glen Finglas James resided. James married in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to
Elizabeth BUCHANAN b: ABT 1665. They had the following known children:
John Ban Mor STEWART in Auchnahard b: 20 JAN 1711 in Balimenoch
(of Leny), Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. John married on 24 JAN 1733 in
Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Mary BUCHANAN of The Offrans. (This
is the Offrans
of Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, on Loch Venacher, just south of Glenfinglas.) She was born ABT
2 MAR 1711/12 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John
Buchanan in the Offrans and Janet Buchanan. Stewarts of the South
describes John as: "John Bain Mor, late tenant at Auchnahard, Glenfinglas,
left five sons." The Ardvorlich History
notes that John Ban Mor did not reside in Auchnahard until sometime between
1744-1748. According
to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account, John Ban Mor
resided in Grodich before moving to Auchnahard and implies that Duart had been
the previous home for more than a generation. This was about the same time that his brother Alexander left
Glen Finglas. It may also be the time their father died. John became head of
the largest and most prosperous branch of Stewarts in Glenfinglas. They became
known as the "Bains of Glenfinglas". (Bain is an Anglo corruption of
ban which means "fair haired".) John was the lead defendant in "The
Glen Affair" (1755-1752) in which the tenants of Glen Finglas were in dispute
with their landlord over unpaid rent. John Ban Mor was still alive in 1772
when the matter was resolved. The Ardvorlich History claims that
shortly after 1860 "practically the whole tribe emigrated to Canada and
settled in Ontario."John Stewart and Elizabeth Buchanan had the following children, all but one of whom had descendants. For readability, their descendants are all presented separately below:

Callander, Perthshire, ScotlandCallander parish records show the most likely candidate for this Alexander was one who married Beatrix Stewart and resided in Grodich and Auchnahard and possibly later in Bochastle.
It appears more likely that Beatrix Stewart was the one who was the child of James Stewart in Glen Finglas and not Alexander. In which case the "brother" reference above likely refers to "brother-in-law". However, just in case the reference was intended to mean "brother-german" then we will leave this Alexander here for reference.
John Ban Mor Stewart in Auchnahard is introduced above. His children and descendants are presented here:
Janet STEWART, b. ABT 1734 in Perthshire, Scotland. Janet is not listed in the full accounting of this family in The Ardvorlich History. However the appendix to The Ardvorlich History contains the following reference: "Another daughter (of John Ban Mor) married Walter S. in Auchinferron (Gartnafueran?)" Although the preceding reference does not give the daughter's name, it would appear to be Janet Stewart who married Walter STEWART, 10th (and last) of Gartnafuaran, who is described as having married on 18 APR 1748 in Glasgow to a Janet Stewart "clandestinely" while they were both living in Glenfinglas. Their clandestine marriage could be due to the fact that she may have been no older than 15. (Although it is possible that she could have been born before her parents were married, or she could have been from a previous marriage, however she does fulfill the naming pattern by being first daughter.) The children of Janet and Walter Stewart are presented on the Gartnafuaran page.
James is described in Stewarts of the South as: "James Stewart, late Tacksman Inverchearnaig, Braes of Balquhidder, Earl of Murray's estate. He left one son...(At this point their appears to be text missing in the original transcription or possibly in the original document, as the subsequent sentences do not follow from the previous.)...of a numerous family, but left one son whose name is...Alexander Stewart of Auchnahaurd." The Ardvorlich History says that James had only one son, thus it is suggested that the remainder of his sons must have died in infancy. According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's account: "John Stewart and Mary Buchanan - their son James was grandfather or father to the Balquhidder Stewarts. James had a son Alistir Mor. James was in Lanrick." The "Balquhidder Stewarts" that Mrs. Stewart of Milton was referring to are James and John Stewart, sons of Alastair Mor Stewart, son of this James Stewart. On 24 MAR 1768 James sponsored the baptism of Alexander Stewart, "child begotten in fornication" by John Stewart in Monachaltuarach and Catharine Ferguson, his servant. Does this imply that James was related to John Stewart in Monachaltuarach?
James married on 31 JAN 1763 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret STEWART , in Lendrick, daughter of Archibald Stewart and Mary McFarlane in Lendrick of the Stewarts of Annat. She was bap. 6 MAY 1739 in Lendrick, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. James and Margaret had the following children:
Margaret Drummond and Robert Stewart had the following children:
- Archibald STEWART, b abt 1850 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, d 28 JAN 1892 in Auchallander, Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland. Archibald's death record shows he was born illegitimate to Donald Stewart and Margaret MacKay. Archibald married on 9 MAR 1882 in Edindonich, Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland to Elizabeth Forrest BROWN. They had the following children:
- Christina STEWART, b 26 FEB 1883 in Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland.
- Donald STEWART, b abt 1886 in Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland.
- Helen Muir STEWART, b abt 1891 in Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland. She is cited in the following extract: "Mr MacNaughton farmer at Inverlochlarig who married Miss McIntyre [in] Iyhnabloir(?). His mother was a Stewart, a sister of Stewart in Auchnallader, (an aunt) of Helen Muir Stewart � Dec. 27th 1925 - Information from Helen Muir Stewart." This refers to Margaret Stewart, sister of Donald Stewart of Auchalader, above, who married Alexander McNaughton. Margaret would have been a great-aunt to Helen Muir Stewart. - Archena STEWART, b. abt. 1893 in Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland. She is not confirmed as a child of this family. She is found residing with this family in 1901 in Edinburgh, but it must be noted that her approximated date of birth falls a year after her alleged father died. It is quite possible the census could be out by a year, or she may not be a child of this family.
According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account: "Of the Grodich Stewarts who left Grodich and came to Auchnahard, there were three of the name of John in succession � grandfather, father and son. That family eventually went to Aberdeen and became wine merchants there." She says later: "Of the [that] Grodich family, the first of the three Johns was possibly the son of John Stewart, Glenfinlas and Mary Buchanan." It is not certain if this reference pertains to this family or another Glen Finglas family. John married on 18 JUL 1771 in Callander and Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian STEWART Of Ardveich b: ABT 1745 in Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following children:
- Margaret STEWART, b 1899 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland
- Elizabeth McNeill STEWART, b Feb 1901 in Ledard Cottage, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland.
John Stewart in Auchnahard died about 1778 and his wife, Christie Stewart married secondly on 25 APR 1779 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to John STEWART in Ardcheanochdan and Corriechrombie b: ABT 1750 in Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of James Stewart in Ardcheanochdan (of Branch III of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie.) They had descendants who are presented on the Glenbuckie page.
Mrs Stewart of Milton's account mentions: "There were two Stewart families in Grodich. The earlier family are those who eventually went to Aberdeen. The latter went to Strathyre -- of this family was John who was nearly 100 when he died. Walter Stewart (Frangich) was in Glenfinlas. He married an Aberdeenshire woman McNab. He was of the first Grodichs." The family of the "first Grodichs" was the family above. Note: "Frangich" is Gaelic for "French speaker". She says later, "Walter Frangich was probably related to Walter in Edralechan as I understand he was a cousin of my mother�s. James of this family was a clockmaker in Glasgow.

Alexander married on 3 DEC 1776 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland to Janet WILSON b: ABT 1750 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. They had the following children:
Margaret STEWART b: 7 FEB 1778 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.
She presumably died as a child prior to the birth of her same-named
sister.
John STEWART b: 21 AUG 1779 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.
He is not mentioned in the Ardvorlich History and is presumed to
have died as a child.
Janet STEWART b: ABT 1780 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.
She is presumed to have died young prior to the births of her two
same-named sisters.
Mary STEWART b: 20 DEC 1780 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. It
appears that her twin brother died at birth. She married on 22
APR 1811 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland to Dr. James CLELLAND.
According to the Ardvorlich History they had "three sons who all
died young, and a daughter who married Dr. Ritchie." They had
the following children:
Alexander Stewart CLELLAND b: 27 JAN 1812 in Glasgow, Lanark,
Scotland. According to the Ardvorlich History he died young.
James Dennistoun CLELLAND b: 15 OCT 1813 in Rutherglen, Glasgow,
Lanark, Scotland. According to the Ardvorlich History he
died young.
Mary Stewart CLELLAND b: 23 APR 1815 in Rutherglen, Glasgow,
Lanark, Scotland. According to the Ardvorlich History she
married Dr. RITCHIE, although no record of this marriage has been
found. It is not known if they had descendants.
Henry Wilson CLELLAND b: 9 MAY 1818 in Rutherglen, Glasgow,
Lanark, Scotland. According to the Ardvorlich History he
died young.
Son STEWART b: 20 DEC 1780 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.
He appears to have been a twin brother to Mary and died at birth.
Janet STEWART b: 24 AUG 1782 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.
She presumably died young prior to the birth of her same-named
sister.
Janet STEWART b: 19 JUN 1784 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.
According to the Ardvorlich History she lived to adulthood by never
married. Nothing more is known of her.
Margaret STEWART b: 4 MAR 1787 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.
According to the Ardvorlich History she lived to adulthood by never
married. Nothing more is known of her.
Jean STEWART b: 12 APR 1789 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.
She is not mentioned in the Ardvorlich History and is presumed to
have died as a child.
Alexander STEWART b: 24 JAN 1792 in Glasgow, Lanark,
Scotland. He is not mentioned in the Ardvorlich History and is
presumed to have died as a child.
They had the following children. Only two of his sons survived to adulthood.
- John STEWART, b: 04 JAN 1861 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He died 30 OCT 1879 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
- Peter STEWART, b: 01 SEP 1862 in Callander Perthshire, Scotland. He married on 12 JUN 1894 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Mary MCNAB. He died on 23 JUL 1932 in Craigroyston, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Alexander STEWART, b. 08 OCT 1864 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Nothing else is known of him.
- James STEWART, b. 21 DEC 1866 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He married on 28 APR 1897 in the Station Hotel, Strathyre, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet Paton BRANNAN. James died on 02 JUN 1939 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
- Margaret STEWART. b. 02 MAY 1870 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 28 APR 1897 in Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland to James Paton MITCHELL. She died 06 JUL 1960 in Dunblane, Perthshire, Scotland.
- Elizabeth Ann STEWART, b. 06 JUL 1872 in Callander Perthshire Scotland. She married James MCFARLANE.
- Christina STEWART, b. 04 NOV 1874 in Callander Perthshire, Scotland. She died 11 APR 1965 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.
grandfather(uncle)." The deletions are preserved from the original text as Mrs Stewart appears to have been a little confused in her references. Robert Ban Stewart was her husband's grandfather and Alasitr Rob was her husband's uncle.Robert Ban Stewart married secondly to an unknown woman and had the following child:
- Elizabeth STEWART, b: 1827, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Elizabeth married on 29 JAN 1856 in Alloa, Clackmannan, Scotland to her second cousin, Peter STEWART in Coilantogle, b 1803 in Coilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, son of Duncan Stewart in Auchnahard, Line 8 below. The Ardvorlich History records the following erroneously: "Robert married secondly and had a daughter, Mary, who married Peter Coilintogle."

Duncan is presumed to have married to Mary LIDDON b: ABT 1850 in Scotland, although no record of their marriage has been found. They had the following children:
The next line of descendants of Iain Buidh Mhor Stewart of the Bains of Glenfinglas was one Walter Stewart in Dunan, Ardvorlich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Walter is described in Stewarts of the South as:
There was one Walter, cousin to Doal Ban Mor, tacksman in Ardvorlich, who left four sons:
1. William Stewart, schoolmaster at Summerline Flanders Moss, who has three sons:
A merchant in Hamburgh. (Germany?)
A clark in Glasgow.
An assistant to his father at Summerline.
2. His second son is in Lord Down's (Doune's) work. He has four sons:
the oldest [are] Massons
(not mentioned but the plural preceding would imply that the second son was also a mason)
the third a wright
the four is a servant man
3 Line. Alexander Stewart at Crochavie, Aberfoil parish, under the Lordship of Monteith, now belonging to the Duke of Montrose. Alexander has one son:
- Charles.
There was one Duncan Stewart Brother to....
The reference to "Doal Ban Mor" is problematic. It can be interpreted two ways: either as a transliteration of "Domhnall", the Gaelic form of Donald, which is pronounced similar to "Doh-al"; or it could be a transcription error for "John Ban Mor". This makes it unclear if Walter is a cousin of the previously mentioned John Ban Mor in Auchnahard, or if there was an additional Donald Ban Mor. As we have no other evidence of a Donald Stewart in Auchnahard at the time nor did Walter Stewart in Dunan have any descendants named Donald, then the simpler option is preferred -- that Doal Ban Mor is a transcription error for John Ban Mor.
The Comrie OPR reveals that Walter resided at Dunan (also spelled "Dounan" in the OPR, "Downen" on an early map (at right), and "An Dunan" on modern maps). Dunan (prounced "doo-nan" or "down-an") means "little hill" and is located on the Ardvorlich estate above Balimeanach. The 18th century map clearly shows a residence located at Dunan, however today it is nothing more than a grassy hill on the climb up Ben Vorlich.
Stewarts of the South says that Walter had four sons, but the Comrie OPR reveals only three sons. There is a significant gap between the date of Walter's marriage and the birth of his first son. Thus it is unclear if the missing son was born prior to Alexander in 1745 or after John in 1749. To add further confusion, Stewarts of the South shows William as the first son; whereas the Comrie OPR shows William as the middle son. Thus we cannot rely on onomastic evidence to help us identify Walter's father.
Walter's son, William, is easily identified. He is found in the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Census residing at 14 Summer's Lane with his wife Sarah Mclean and their children. They are recorded as having resided on the Moss for 14 years and having come from "Lochearnside".
The remainder of Walter's children are more elusive. Although we know the names of two of Walter's other sons it is not clear which of them is the "second son (who) is in Lord Down's work", since William was in fact the second born son. Stewarts of the South then goes on to a new paragraph beginning "3 Line". It's unclear from this reference if the "3 Line" refers to the 3rd son of Walter or the 3rd line of descendants of Bains of Glenfinglas family. Stewarts of the South lists "Alexander Stewart at Crochavie" under 3 Line. As Walter did have a son named Alexander then this Alexander could be the third son of Walter, or he could be a distant cousin. 3 Line concludes with the reference to "Duncan Stewart, brother to..." as shown above. Since there appears to be text missing here then we don't know who Duncan was brother to. Is he the fourth son of Walter (not found in the Comrie OPR)? Or is he another distantly related cousin line?
It is unclear from the original whether "3 Line" is a new descendant line altogether or if it represents the 3rd (and 4th) sons of Walter Stewart in Ardvorlich.
We account for this family as follows:
Walter STEWART , in Dunan b: ABT 1710 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
as a grandson of John Buidhe Mor Stewart, 1st in Auchnahard by an unknown
father. Walter is described in Stewarts of the South as: "There was one
Walter, cousin to Doal (sic, "John") Ban Mor, tacksman in Ardvorlich, who left
four sons." Comrie OPR records reveal that Walter resided at Dunan (also spelled
"Dounan" in the OPR, "Downen" on an 18th century map, and "An Dunan" on modern
maps). Dunan (prounced "doo-nan" or "down-an") means "little hill" and is
located on the Ardvorlich estate above Balimeanach. The 18th century map clearly
shows a residence located at Dunan, however today it is nothing more than a
grassy hill on the climb up Ben Vorlich. Walter married on 31 DEC 1742 in Callander,
Perthshire, Scotland to
Agnes STEWART b: ABT 1720 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Her
birth record has not been identified. They had the following children:
Alexander STEWART b: ABT 17 JAN 1745 in Dunan at Ardvorlich, Comrie,
Perthshire, Scotland. Stewarts of the South is confusing in its
accounting of this family. It would appear that this Alexander is the one
described as: "Alexander Stewart at Crochavie, Aberfoil parish, under the
Lordship of Monteith, now belonging to the Duke of Montrose. Alexander has one
son: Charles." However this identification is not certain.
Charles STEWART b: ABT 1770 in Crochavie, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland
William STEWART b: ABT 26 APR 1747 in Dunan at Ardvorlich, Comrie,
Perthshire, Scotland. William is described in Stewarts of the South as
being a "schoolmaster at Summerline Flanders Moss, who has three sons". He is
shown in the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Census residing at 14 Summer's Lane (Summerline),
employed as a schoolmaster, and residing with his wife and most of his
children. Their place of origin is given as "Lochearnside". They had been
living on the Moss for 14 years (since about 1800). He married Sarah
MCLEAN b: 1770 in Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following children:
John STEWART b: 1792 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. John is
described in Stewarts of the South as being a "merchant in Hamburgh".
Anne STEWART b: 3 AUG 1793 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland. Anne is
not listed with her parents in the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Census. However
the census also indicated that there were "no persons deceased" in the
household. Thus it is most likely that Anne was married and residing with
her husband.A potential match has been found with: Duncan McFarlane married Agnes Stewart, 13 MAY 1811 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. They had only one son, John McFarlan, 25/29 FEB 1812 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. This is the only marriage for an Agnes/Anne Stewart 1806-1816 nearby to the Moss.

Walter is described in Stewarts of the South as being a "clark in Glasgow".

Duncan STEWART b: ABT 1755 in Dunan at Ardvorlich, Comrie, Perthshire,
Scotland. Stewarts of the South is confusing in its accounting of
this family. It says: "There was one Duncan Stewart Brother to.... " and the
entry stops at this point. It would appear that the original text is
unreadable or missing. It is not clear who Duncan is a brother to. He may be
the fourth son of Walter Stewart in Dunan. No birth record has been found for

There was one Duncan Stewart Brother to....
The accounting of the original is extremely confusing here. This line can be interpreted in two ways. This Alexander could be the third son of Walter Stewart in Dunan, shown above. Or this Alexander may represent a new descendant line independently descended from Ian Buighe Mor Stewart, 1st in Auchnahard.
Similarly with the closing reference to Duncan Stewart. He could be the missing fourth son of Walter Stewart in Dunan, or he too could be independently descended. The text is missing so we are robbed of knowing who Duncan was brother to, which could have helped us in setting these lines in their proper context.
The only Charles Stewart, son of Alexander Stewart, that we can find in the OPRs about the right time is the following family. It is clear by the multiple marriages and same-named births that we are looking at several families convoluted here. Until we are able to examine the OPR entries for each we will not be able to sort out these families. For now we leave this as a research lead in progress.

The next line of descendants of the Bains of Glenfinglas is described in Stewarts of the South as follows:
Walter Stewart, tacksman of Toighbhavid, Callander parish, Sir Patrick Murray's property -- a new purchase. Walter left one son:
- Alexander Stewart, late farmer at Auchlow (Auchtow), Balquhidder, on Sir John Murray's estate. He is now at Callander with
- four sons who are minors.
According to Stewarts of the South, Tighbhavid is located in Callander parish however we have been unable to locate it.
There are two families found in the Callander OPR who are both very close matches for this description. Each family has a second son named Alexander, so we must presume that if either of these are correct then the eldest son died young. One family is in Auchnahard which as the Bains' family property and the other family was in Duart which was just across from Auchnahard and is where John Ban Mor formerly lived. The two Alexanders were born only 3 years apart making both candidates chronologically equal also, and both capable of having for underage sons in 1815. So each of these is equally plausible and we have no means by which to prefer one family over the other.

Mrs Stewart of Milton's account mentions: "There were two Stewart families in Grodich. The earlier family are those who eventually went to Aberdeen. The latter went to Strathyre -- of this family was John who was nearly 100 when he died. Walter Stewart (Frangich) was in Glenfinlas. He married an Aberdeenshire woman McNab. He was of the first Grodichs." The family of the "first Grodichs" was the family above. Note: "Frangich" is Gaelic for "French speaker". She says later, "Walter Frangich was probably related to Walter in Edralechan as I understand he was a cousin of my mother�s. James of this family was a clockmaker in Glasgow.

Cambusburn is located in Kilmadock parish. There are no matching births in the Kilmadock OPR that fit with this family.

ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:
Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.
Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month. Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.
Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
