The Stewarts of Auchnahard were a cadet branch of the Stewarts of Annat and the Stewarts of Ardvorlich. Please refer to the Ardvorlich and Annat pages for a full introduction. This family was also the leading family of the Stewarts in Glen Finglas. It is essential for researchers of this family to refer to the Stewarts in Glen Finglas page for a full introduction to the Glen Finglas Stewarts.
Glen Finglas showing its proximity to Callander
www.multimap.com
In the 17th and 18th centuries Glen Finglas was overrun by Stewarts. They were the senior tenants in Glen Finglas and the most prominently represented surname. However, they didn't all come from the same Stewart family. We have identified at least four separate major branches of Stewarts who resided in Glen Finglas during that time period. With so many Stewarts living together, some means of nicknames became necessary in order to differentiate which family was which. The Stewarts who lived in Duart were called the "Duart Stewarts" or just Duart for short. Thus, James Stewart in Duart was referred to in casual conversation as "James Duart."
The Stewart family who ultimately resided in Auchnahard was nicknamed "The Bains of Glenfinglas." "Bain" is an Anglicization of the Gaelic word bn which means "fair haired." This designation presumably differentiated them from their distant cousins of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie who also resided in Glen Finglas and who were called "Dubh" or "dark haired."
We now continue with the story of the "fair haired" Stewarts in Glen Finglas:
"Hillside from Sron Achaidh na h-Airde" (Auchnahard)
This picture shows the farmlands that would have belonged to Auchnahard.
The residence itself (now submerged) would have been located just off the
shoreline on the upper left.

John Buidhe Mor STEWART in Glen Finglas b: ABT 1625 in Annat, Doune, Perthshire, Scotland as the natural (illegitimate) son of John Stewart, 2nd of Annat.
Stewarts of the South describes John as: "John Stewart of Annat had a
natural son called Iain Buigh mor. He give him a farm in Glenfinglas. His
descendants are now called Bains."
John was called "Iain Buidhe Mor" or "Big John of the Yellow Hair" although the
alternative spelling in Stewarts of the South of "Buigh" would mean "Big
John the Effeminate" (unlikely); the former is preferred. This John is recorded
in The Ardvorlich History as the earliest verifiable ancestor of the
Stewarts in Glenfinglas and referenced in "1663 John S. in Glenfinglas
Test[ament] (Auchnahard), James S., his lawful son. Another James S. married his
daughter. Another daughter married Walter S. in Auchinferron (Gartnafueran?) --
DCR [Dunblane Commissariat Records]" This would suggest that John died in 1663.
The fact that John Buidhe Mor's grandson, John Ban Mor had a daughter who
married Walter Stewart in Gartnafuaran and another daughter who married James
Stewart in in Duart suggests that the reference is confused and is referring to
the later John Ban Mor. The Annat Tree refers to this John as "John Dow Stewart in
Glenfinglas, natural son". However John Dow Stewart, the natural son, actually
refers to John Dubh Beag Stewart the natural son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glen
Finglas. John Dubh Beag Stewart was responsible for the Clearing of Glen
Finglas. Several generations of the Glenbucke Stewarts were referred to as "Dubh"
("Black"), meaning "dark-haired", whereas this John and his descendants were
referred to as "Bain", the "Fair-Haired Stewart", presumably to differentiate
them from their Glenbuckie cousins. The Annat Tree has confused the two
Johns. The Ardvorlich History says that the earliest
verifiable ancestor of this family was "John Bhuie Stewart" who was "first in the Glen" and was
"preceded by a John or twa".
Stewarts of the South, Ardvorlich Section IX - "The Bains of Glenfinglas"
gives the origins of this branch as: "John Stewart of Annat had a natural
son called Iain Buigh mor. He give him
a farm in Glenfinglas. His descendants
are now called Bains." The accounting of the Bains in Stewarts of
the South matches with the
accounting of the Glenfinglas Stewarts in The Ardvorlich History. Thus, we
follow Stewarts of the South and suggest that John Buidhe Mor Stewart was a natural son of John
Stewart of Annat. Chronology would suggest that the John of
Annat in question would have to be
John Stewart, 2nd of Annat. Sometime around 1620, following the clearing of Glenfinglas, the Annat family
complained to James Beag Stewart, 2nd of Ardvorlich, after he received a
beneficial tack of Glenfinglas and portioned it among the principal branches of
the Baldorran Stewarts, but left out the Annat family. Chronology makes it
likely that it was Alexander Stewart, 1st of Annat, who complained about being
left out of the Glenfinglas tack. The Annat family were then given a one-eighth
share of Glenfinglas. By later accountings, it would appear that their portion
was Auchnahard. However, Mrs Stewart of Milton's Account says that this family
resided first in Duart, then in Grodich, and only after 1750 did they move to
Auchnahard, so we cannot be certain where in Glen Finglas this family began. The Ardvorlich History claims that the later John Buidhe Mor was
preceded by "a John or two". It seems likely that the Annat portion of Glen
Finglas probably went first to John Stewart, future 2nd Laird of Annat, while
Alexander was still alive, then John, future 2nd of Annat, likely held the
property until his father's death, at which point he would have inherited the
principal estate of Annat, to become John Stewart, 2nd of Annat, which would be
when his natural son, John Buidhe Mor probably took possession of the tack in
Glenfinglas. John's death date of 1663 comes from The Annat Tree submitted to the
IGI. We presently have no further reference for this death date.
John Buidhe Mor was the father of:
James STEWART in Glen Finglas b: ABT 1660 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as the son of John Buidhe Mor Stewart, in Glen Finglas, shown just above. James is recorded in The Ardvorlich History as having succeeded his his father in Auchnahard. Mrs Stewart of Milton (a gr-gr-granddaughter) contradicts this saying that these Stewarts were in Grodich prior to 1750 and in Duart before that. She also mentions an Alexander in Auchnahard in 1707 who left Glen Finglas about 1744-1748 (who may or may not have been from this family.) Thus we cannot be certain exactly where in Glen Finglas James resided. James married in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Elizabeth BUCHANAN b: ABT 1665. They had the following known children:
John Stewart and Elizabeth Buchanan had the following children, all but one of whom had descendants. For readability, their descendants are all presented separately below:
Callander parish records show the most likely candidate for this Alexander was one who married Beatrix Stewart and resided in Grodich and Auchnahard and possibly later in Bochastle.
It appears more likely that Beatrix Stewart was the one who was the child of James Stewart in Glen Finglas and not Alexander. In which case the "brother" reference above likely refers to "brother-in-law". However, just in case the reference was intended to mean "brother-german" then we will leave this Alexander here for reference.
John Ban Mor Stewart in Auchnahard is introduced above. His children and descendants are presented here:
Janet STEWART, b. ABT 1734 in Perthshire, Scotland. Janet is not listed in the full accounting of this family in The Ardvorlich History. However the appendix to The Ardvorlich History contains the following reference: "Another daughter (of John Ban Mor) married Walter S. in Auchinferron (Gartnafueran?)" Although the preceding reference does not give the daughter's name, it would appear to be Janet Stewart who married Walter STEWART, 10th (and last) of Gartnafuaran, who is described as having married on 18 APR 1748 in Glasgow to a Janet Stewart "clandestinely" while they were both living in Glenfinglas. Their clandestine marriage could be due to the fact that she may have been no older than 15. (Although it is possible that she could have been born before her parents were married, or she could have been from a previous marriage, however she does fulfill the naming pattern by being first daughter.) The children of Janet and Walter Stewart are presented on the Gartnafuaran page.
James STEWART, in Invercarnaig b: 23 OCT 1736 in Inverlochlarig, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, bap 28 OCT 1736 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of John Ban Mor Stewart in Auchnahard.
James is described in Stewarts of the South as: "James Stewart, late Tacksman Inverchearnaig, Braes of Balquhidder, Earl of Murray's estate. He left one son...(At this point their appears to be text missing in the original transcription or possibly in the original document, as the subsequent sentences do not follow from the previous.)...of a numerous family, but left one son whose name is...Alexander Stewart of Auchnahaurd." The Ardvorlich History says that James had only one son, thus it is suggested that the remainder of his sons must have died in infancy. According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's account: "John Stewart and Mary Buchanan - their son James was grandfather or father to the Balquhidder Stewarts. James had a son Alistir Mor. James was in Lanrick." The "Balquhidder Stewarts" that Mrs. Stewart of Milton was referring to are James and John Stewart, sons of Alastair Mor Stewart, son of this James Stewart. On 24 MAR 1768 James sponsored the baptism of Alexander Stewart, "child begotten in fornication" by John Stewart in Monachaltuarach and Catharine Ferguson, his servant. Does this imply that James was related to John Stewart in Monachaltuarach?
James married on 31 JAN 1763 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret STEWART , in Lendrick, daughter of Archibald Stewart and Mary McFarlane in Lendrick of the Stewarts of Annat. She was bap. 6 MAY 1739 in Lendrick, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. James and Margaret had the following children:
- John STEWART b: 26 DEC 1763 in Auchnahard, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. John is presumed to have died prior to the birth of his same named brother. (He is not shown in Malcolm Gray's notes, but is found in the Balquhidder OPR.)
- Mary STEWART b: ABT 15 NOV 1765 in Innercharnaig, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 30 JUN 1796 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Duncan DRUMMOND b: ABT 1770 in Cois, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following children:
- Margaret DRUMMOND b: 1798 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Margaret married on 26 MAY 1827 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Robert STEWART of Offerans and Culnagrein b: 25 JUL 1798 in Blairgarrie, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, son of James Stewart of Chrochavie of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran Branch IV. From Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions: JANE 31.1.1842. 18; only son Jas 28.5.1845 13; Isabella 13.2.1852 15. and Eliz 23.7.1904 65
Margaret Drummond and Robert Stewart had the following children:
- Mary STEWART b: 26 MAY 1830 in Blargarie, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
- James STEWART b: 10 MAR 1832 in Blairgarie, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Janet STEWART b: 23 JUL 1834 in Blairgarie, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Isabella STEWART b: 28 NOV 1836 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland
- Elizabeth STEWART b: 11 OCT 1838 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland
- Isabella DRUMMOND b: ABT 1800 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Robert DRUMMOND b: ABT 1800 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Janet DRUMMOND b: ABT 1800 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
John STEWART b: 21 APR 1768 in Innercharnaig, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. He may be the John Stewart, son of James, who, along with his brother, Alexander, is recorded by Mitchell as being a tacksman in Atholl.
Archibald STEWART b: ABT 16 APR 1770 in Innercharnaig, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Archibald's name is not known for certain. The OPR baptismal entry is blank or difficult to read. Onomastics would suggest that his name is Archibald. According to Stewarts of the South and Mrs Stewart of Milton's Account, Archibald's father, James Stewart in Invercarnaig, had only one son who survived to adulthood and that was Alastair Mor. Thus Archibald must have died in childhood.
- Janet STEWART b: 26 APR 1772 in Innercharnaig, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 10 DEC 1793 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Donald STEWART b: ABT 1770 in Auchleskine, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.
- Isabella STEWART b: ABT 13 MAY 1774 in Innercharnaig, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 3 JUL 1795 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Andrew BUCHANAN , Of Ballimenoch Of Leanie (Leny) b: ABT 11 SEP 1763 in Farmieston, Balimenoch, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
Alastair Mhor STEWART, in Auchnahard b: 30 MAR 1777 in Innercharnaig, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Stewarts of the South says "Alexander Stewart of Auchnahaurd, Glenfinglas, [has] one-eighth part of [Glenfinglas], [and is] married to Donald Stewart's sister at Auch [in] Glenurchay (Glenorchy, Argyll). He had five sons who are all minors." And later it says that Alastair had "a spark in the throat which cannot be quenched". The Ardvorlich History identifies him as Alastair Mor and also says that his wife Christian was "Auch's sister". Furthermore, according to both Stewarts of the South and The Ardvorlich History Alexander/Alastair was the only son of James Stewart in Invercarnaig to survive to adulthood. Alastair married on 27 JUL 1803 in Callander and Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian STEWART b: 1771 in Auch, Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland of the Stewarts of Cashlie and Auch. Mrs. Stewart in Milton refers to Christian as a sister of Donald Stewart in Auch. They had the following children:
- James STEWART in Inverlochlarig b: 1804 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account: "James who married Cath. Stewart from Edinburgh - he was in the Braes of Balquhidder." According to The Ardvorlich History, James and Catherine Stewart had no children. James is presumed to have married to Catharine STEWART, b: ABT 16 MAR 1821 in Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, daughter of Alexander Stewart (son of John Mor Bhuntata Stewart of The "Flint" Stewarts in Leachdanscridan) and Christian McDonald, sister of Donald McDonald of Monachyle), although no record of their marriage has been found.
- Alexander STEWART b: ABT 16 APR 1807 in Auchnahard, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Alexander married Margaret KING b: ABT 1807 in Scotland and moved to Buenos Ayres, Argentina.
- John STEWART, in Lanrick and Inverlochlarig b: ABT 26 NOV 1809 in Auchnahard, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account: "John who was in the Braes [of Balquhidder] afterwards. John died unmarried in 1872. He at one time managed farms in Glenlyon for his uncles. They had Cashlie & Auch. John then came to Lanrick and afterwards went to the Braes [of Balquhidder]."
- Margaret STEWART b: 1811 in Auchnahard, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Margaret married Alexander MCNAUGHTON b: 1806 in Moar, Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland. They had descendants.
- Donald STEWART of Auchalader, b: 26 JUL 1814 in Auchnahard, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. No birth record has been found for Donald. He is found in family records and in The Account of Mrs Stewart of Milton and in census records. In 1871 and 1881 Donald was residing in Auchalader, Glen Orchy, Argyll, Scotland and was a farmer of 20,000 acres -- an enormous farm. According to Malcolm Gray's notes, Donald had a natural son named Archibald. Mrs Stewart of Milton mentions no such son, however we have received information from researcher David Paterson confirming Archibald's existence. Donald died on 9 AUG 1898 at Auchallander, Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland at the age of 84. His death record shows his parents as Alexander Stewart and Christian Stewart. Donald never married but had relations with Margaret MACKAY and had the following natural son:
- Archibald STEWART, b abt 1850 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, d 28 JAN 1892 in Auchallander, Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland. Archibald's death record shows he was born illegitimate to Donald Stewart and Margaret MacKay. Archibald married on 9 MAR 1882 in Edindonich, Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland to Elizabeth Forrest BROWN. They had the following children:
- Christina STEWART, b 26 FEB 1883 in Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland.
- Donald STEWART, b abt 1886 in Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland.
- Helen Muir STEWART, b abt 1891 in Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland. She is cited in the following extract: "Mr MacNaughton farmer at Inverlochlarig who married Miss McIntyre [in] Iyhnabloir(?). His mother was a Stewart, a sister of Stewart in Auchnallader, (an aunt) of Helen Muir Stewart Dec. 27th 1925 - Information from Helen Muir Stewart." This refers to Margaret Stewart, sister of Donald Stewart of Auchalader, above, who married Alexander McNaughton. Margaret would have been a great-aunt to Helen Muir Stewart. John McNaughton, son of Margaret Stewart and Alexander McNaughton, resided at Inverlochlarig. http://www.hostmybb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=251&mforum=stewart
- Archena STEWART, b. abt. 1893 in Glenorchy, Argyll, Scotland. She is not confirmed as a child of this family. She is found residing with this family in 1901 in Edinburgh, but it must be noted that her approximated date of birth falls a year after her alleged father died. It is quite possible the census could be out by a year, or she may not be a child of this family.
- Charles STEWART in Auchnahard b: ABT 25 DEC 1816 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He married on 16 OCT 1860 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Marjory STEWART b: 19 APR 1832 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of Peter Stewart of the Caleb Stewarts in Strathyre (a cadet of the Stewarts of Glenogle). The 1881 census shows Charles living on Glenfinglas Road, Auchnahard. The Ardvorlich History says that Charles married Marjory Stewart who was as "a Caleb, John of Grodich's sister". The Caleb Stewarts were a cadet branch of the Stewarts of Glenogle. Marjory was actually sister-in-law of John Stewart of Grodich rather than his sister, but 19th century Scottish custom did not differentiate between sister and sister-in-law. According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account, Charles was a son of Alexander Stewart in Auchnahard. She says later: "Charles Stewart before mentioned (brother of John and James in the Braes of Balquhidder) died in Callander."
- Donald STEWART b: 31 MAY 1779 in Innercharnaig, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Presumed to have died young.
- Margaret STEWART b: 4 AUG 1782 in Innercharnaig, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
John STEWART, in Auchnahard b: 10 APR 1740 in Duart, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above a son of John Ban Mor Stewart in Auchnahard. This John died in 1783. Stewarts of the South says "John Stewart, late tenant at Auchnahaird, left one son, called "John Tacksman of Grodlick" [Grodich]. One-eighth of Glenfinglas. He has one son who is a minor."
According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account: "Of the Grodich Stewarts who left Grodich and came to Auchnahard, there were three of the name of John in succession grandfather, father and son. That family eventually went to Aberdeen and became wine merchants there." She says later: "Of the [that] Grodich family, the first of the three Johns was possibly the son of John Stewart, Glenfinlas and Mary Buchanan." It is not certain if this reference pertains to this family or another Glen Finglas family. John married on 18 JUL 1771 in Callander and Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian STEWART Of Ardveich b: ABT 1745 in Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following children:
- John STEWART , Of The Grodich b: ABT 12 OCT 1773 in Grotdich, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. John of the Grodich is recorded as having lived to the age of 100. He married on 18 MAR 1813 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to his first cousin, Mary STEWART, in Glenfinglas. Mary was born ABT 6 MAR 1789 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John's uncle Duncan Stewart (Line #7 of this family below). By 1851 John was living in the town of Callander and no longer residing in Glenfinglas. According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account: "Of the Grodich Stewarts who left Grodich and came to Auchnahard, there were three of the name of John in succession grandfather, father and son. That family eventually went to Aberdeen and became wine merchants there." -- This reference may not pertain to this family, but may be Gart'n IV. They had the following children:
- Christian STEWART b: ABT 24 JUN 1814 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She died at age 14.
- Mary STEWART b: ABT 27 JUN 1815 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She died at age 12.
- John STEWART , in Grodich b: ABT 4 AUG 1818 in Grodich, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He remained in Glenfinglas and is found as late as 1881 still residing in Grodich. He married on 2 DEC 1856 in Laggan, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret STEWART b: 25 FEB 1828 in Immervuline, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of Peter Stewart of the "Caleb Stewarts" of the Glenogle Branch. Margaret's sister Marjory married Charles Stewart, son of Alastair Mhor in Auchnahard (#8 son of James in Invercarnaig #2 above). John and Margaret had the following children:
- John STEWART b: 29 DEC 1857 in Grodich, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He married on 10 DEC 1897 in Kilbride, Clackmannan, Scotland to Mary CONNELLY, b 1877 in Hillarown, Argyllshire, Scotland. They are found in 1901 residing at Ledard Cottage, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland where John was employed as a Farm Manager. Mary's sister, Jane Connelly is residing with them.
- Margaret STEWART, b 1899 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland
- Elizabeth McNeill STEWART, b Feb 1901 in Ledard Cottage, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland.
- Mary STEWART b: 27 MAR 1861 in Auchnahard, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She married John BROWN from Glenorchy, Argyll, and moved to London, England.
- Duncan STEWART b: ABT 25 APR 1821 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He died at age 9.
- Catherine STEWART b: 1825 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 23 NOV 1845 in Killin, Perthshire, Scotland to James MCCAUL b: ABT 1825 in Scotland. Gray's notes indicate that this family is not found in later census records, thus they are presumed to have emigrated after 1855. They had the following children:
- Catharine MCCAUL b: 1845 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- John MCCAUL b: 1850 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Jessie MCCAUL b: 1853 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Margaret MCCAUL b: 8 APR 1855 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Mary STEWART b: ABT 6 FEB 1776 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Catherine STEWART b: ABT 3 AUG 1777 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
John Stewart in Auchnahard died about 1778 and his wife, Christie Stewart married secondly on 25 APR 1779 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to John STEWART in Ardcheanochdan and Corriechrombie b: ABT 1750 in Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of James Stewart in Ardcheanochdan (of Branch III of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie.) They had descendants who are presented on the Glenbuckie page.
Mrs Stewart of Milton's account mentions: "There were two Stewart families in Grodich. The earlier family are those who eventually went to Aberdeen. The latter went to Strathyre -- of this family was John who was nearly 100 when he died. Walter Stewart (Frangich) was in Glenfinlas. He married an Aberdeenshire woman McNab. He was of the first Grodichs." The family of the "first Grodichs" was the family above. Note: "Frangich" is Gaelic for "French speaker". She says later, "Walter Frangich was probably related to Walter in Edralechan as I understand he was a cousin of my mothers. James of this family was a clockmaker in Glasgow.
See branches 4 & 5 below for another possible connection.
Alexander STEWART, b: 25 JUL 1744 in Duart, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of John Ban Mor Stewart in Auchnahard, shown above as a son of John Ban Mor Stewart in Glenfinglas. Alexander is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Mr Alexander Stewart, late Bailie in Glasgow, had no sons." The will of his brother, Robert, in 1813, lists Alexander as a trustee, and as a baillie and merchant in Glasgow. OPR shows he had 10 children, but according to The Ardvorlich History only three of those survived to adulthood and only one married. According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's account: "Alexander Stewart son of John Stewart Glenfinlas and Mary Buchanan married ____ Wilson. He went to Glasgow."
Alexander married on 3 DEC 1776 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland to Janet WILSON b: ABT 1750 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. They had the following children:
Robert Ban STEWART, in Auchnahard, b: 2 NOV 1747 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of John Ban Mor Stewart in Auchnahard. Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert Stewart at Auchnahard, [who had] one-eighth part of Glenfinglas. He has two sons." According to The Ardvorlich History Robert was nicknamed "Rap Bean" (which is merely the English mispronunciation of the Gaelic "Rab Ban" or "Rob Ban"). Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions for Kilmahog Cemetery #35 reads: Mr. Robert Stewart, late tenant Glenfinglas, where his forefathers resided for many generations, b there 11.11.1741 and d there 2.5.1840. Mrs Stewart of Milton's account says of Robert (her own grandfather-in-law): "Robert S., b. 11 NOV 1747 was a son. He married Janet McKinlay.... Above Robert was father of John S. (in) Auchnahard afterwards in Milton. Robert's will contains the following information: "Robert Stewart died 2.5.1840, tenant of Auchnahard Farm, Glenfinglas, Callander. Inventory and Will, 4.3.1840. There are six joint tenants of Glenfinglas. Executors: John Stewart, eldest son, tenant in Milton, and Alexander Stewart, son, Auchnahard. His wife, Janet McKinlay and daughters: Mary, Margaret, Janet, and Katharine. Trustees appointed for children in 1813 -- Baillie Alexander Stewart, merchant in Glasgow, and Duncan Stewart, brother, in Auchnahard, and James McKinlay in Ardchullary. This part was written for him by William Stewart of Ardvorlich. 1821 Codicil, his wife, Janet McKinlay, has died. Janet and Catharine are still unmarried. Written by Robert Stewart, younger of Ardvorlich, witnessed by William Stewart of Ardvorlich. 1840 Codicil was to do with Alexander being paid for work he has done on the farm, written by Robert Stewart of Ardvorlich at Auchnahard, witnessed by Duncan Stewart in Stank. Robert married on 27 FEB 1778 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet MCKINLAY, of the Anie (in the Pass of Leny), b: 3 MAY 1758 in Annie, Strathyre, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Robert and Janet had the following children:
- Mary STEWART b: ABT 20 SEP 1779 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She is presumed to have died young prior to the birth of her same-named sister.
Katharine STEWART b: 19 JUN 1781 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She is presumed to have died young prior to the birth of her same-named sister.
John STEWART, of the Milton of Callander & Blairgarry, b: 7 JUL 1783 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. John is described in Stewarts of the South as: "John, a tacksman of Milton & Blargavred (Blairgarry), Callander parish, on the Earl of Murray's estate. He is an active young man with two sons who are minors. 250 annual rent." Mrs Stewart of Milton says of her own father-in-law: "John S. (in) Auchnahard afterwards in Milton. He m. Mary McDonald & had 4 sons." John married on 25 DEC 1812 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret MCDONALD b: ABT 27 AUG 1790 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John McDonald and Margaret Stewart of Cashlies.
They had the following children. Only two of his sons survived to adulthood.
- Robert STEWART in Bochastle b: 24 NOV 1813, bap. 1 DEC 1813 in Bochastle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. The Ardvorlich History says that Robert never married and died at age 43. Robert died in Bochastle on 19 MAR 1856. However, according to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's account, Robert in Bochastle had two sons in Glasgow. Census and parish records confirm Mrs. Stewart's account. Robert is found in 1851 as a farmer of 140 acres, employing five servants and residing at Bochastle Farm, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. His wife Catherine and newborn daughter Christian are with him. Robert married on 20 AND 22 APR 1848 in Callander and Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland to Catherine MCFARLANE b 1817 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland, probably bap 27 APR 1818 in Aberfoyle, dtr of John MacFarlane and Catharine Sinclair. She was the daughter of John's second cousin, Robert Stewart of Drunkie. Agnes was the "Mrs. Stewart of Milton" referenced in The Ardvorlich History as the source of the family tree from which Ardvorlich based his writing on this family. This family is said to have been the last family to live and farm in Strathgartney. According to The Ardvorlich History, "a descendant, Miss Margaret Stewart, (sic - she was his daughter) who was living in Callander village ca. 1950, was said to be the last of this line." They had the following family:
- John STEWART b: 18 OCT 1866 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He married firstly on 27 OCT 1896 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Helen WHITEHEAD b: 4 NOV 1870 in Corscaplie, Dunblane, Perthshire, Scotland. John married secondly on 3 JUN 1924 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland to Agnes Milne Somerville SIMPSON b: 17 JUL 1880 in Leith Midlothian, Scotland.
- Mary STEWART b: 16 AUG 1869 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. - Duncan STEWART 07/11 AUG 1820 b: 1820 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. The Ardvorlich History describes Duncan as "a banker, who had a family". According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account, Duncan resided in Callander. Duncan married on 13 SEP 1860 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian FERGUSON daughter of Peter Ferguson of Balquhidder and Margaret McKenzie of Callander. Duncan and Christian had the following children:

James STEWART b: 25 MAR 1785 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Stewarts of the South shows only two sons, thus James must have died young.
Alexander STEWART b: 19 FEB 1787 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He is presumed to have died young prior to the birth of his same-named brother.
- Mary STEWART b: 20 FEB 1789 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 25 FEB 1815 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Robert BUCHANAN of Kilchat, b: ABT 13 JUN 1782 in Kilchat, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.

Jane(t)/Jean STEWART b: ABT 18 MAY 1799 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. The Ardvorlich History shows no husband or family for her.
Alexander STEWART b: ABT 6 OCT 1802 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Alexander went by the name "Sandy Rob" -- presumably so named as "Alexander" son of Robert". The Ardvorlich History shows no family for him. Stewarts of the South merely says that he was living with his father ca. 1818. Mrs. Stewart of Milton's account refers to this Alexander as "Alastir Rob" (which is equivalent to "Sandy Rob") in the following entry: "Alexander Stewart in Auchnahard was designed Alastir Donachie Donachie being my grandfather (on fathers side). The other Alexander in Glenfinlas was Alastir Rob. Robert being my husbands
grandfather(uncle)." The deletions are preserved from the original text as Mrs Stewart appears to have been a little confused in her references. Robert Ban Stewart was her husband's grandfather and Alasitr Rob was her husband's uncle.Robert Ban Stewart married secondly to an unknown woman and had the following child:
- Elizabeth STEWART, b: 1827, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Elizabeth married on 29 JAN 1856 in Alloa, Clackmannan, Scotland to her second cousin, Peter STEWART in Coilantogle, b 1803 in Coilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, son of Duncan Stewart in Auchnahard, Line 8 below. The Ardvorlich History records the following erroneously: "Robert married secondly and had a daughter, Mary, who married Peter Coilintogle."
Elizabeth STEWART b: 2 MAY 1751 in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a daughter of John Ban Mor Stewart in Auchnahard. Elizabeth is believed to have never married nor had children.
Mary STEWART, b: 20 FEB 1754 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a daughter of John Ban Mor Stewart in Auchnahard. She is referred to in The Ardvorlich History as follows: "Another James S. married [John Ban's] daughter." She married on 19 DEC 1774 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to James STEWART in Duart, b: 1 AUG bap 5 AUG 1744 in Duart, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, son of Robert Stewart and Mary Stewart of the Stewarts of Invernahyle in Duart.
- Their descendants are presented on the the Stewarts of Invernahyle in Duart page.
Duncan Stewart in Auchnahard and Upper Duart, b: 10 MAY 1756 in Achnahard, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Duncan is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Duncan Stewart [a] Tacksman [in] Auchnahard. One-eighth part of Glenfinglas. He has five sons.... He has other farms beside Glenfinglas." (It is not clear that the "he" refers to Duncan.) Mrs Stewart of Milton's account says of Duncan (her grandfather): "In Upper Dowart was Duncan Stewart and an Aunt. This Duncan had twelve of a family, two of whom died in infancy. His family were..." and then the document goes on to speak of each child in some detail. The 1851 census shows Duncan as a "grazier of Glenfinglas". Duncan lived to be 97 years old. Duncan married 5 AUG 1784 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Mary MCKINLAY, b: 13 DEC 1765 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of James McKinlay, younger of the Anie and Christian Wright. The Ardvorlich History indicates that Mary was the cousin of Janet McKinlay of the Anie who married Robert Stewart, brother of this Duncan Stewart. They had the following children:
- John STEWART, in Coilantogle & Tarnduin b: ABT 1786 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. John is described in Stewarts of the South as: "John Tacksman of Cuilanteogal & Tarnduin, Callander parish, Earl of Murray's estate. Rent 175. Tarnduin was bought from the Perth family. John is a bachelor." John's death certificate says he "died unmarried, age 73". Mrs Stewart of Milton says "John died at Colintogle unmarried."
Christian STEWART b: ABT 28 FEB 1787 in Auchnahard, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Mrs Stewart of Milton describes Christian as: "Christina married Duncan Stewart Duart. She died 11 JUN 1863 and is buried in Kilmahog." Testament of Mrs. Christian Stewart, Residing at Duart, Glenfinglass, d. 11 Jun 1863. She wrote her testament on 3 Jun 1863 and named her son, James, as her executor and bequeathed all of her personal possessions to him. She noted that he resided at Duart. Witnesses to the testament were: John Stewart, farmer, Duart; Charles Stewart, labourer residing with John. Registered 29 Jun 1863, Dunblane, Commissary Court of the Western District of Perth, pages 467-468. Christian married on 31 JUL 1812 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to her cousin (aunt's son) Duncan STEWART b: ABT 26 FEB 1786 in Duart, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland (son of Christian's aunt Mary Stewart and her husband James Stewart in Duart).
Their children are presented under on the Invernahyle Stewarts in Duart page.
- Mary STEWART b: ABT 6 MAR 1789 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 18 MAR 1813 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to John STEWART of the Groditch, her cousin -- the son of her uncle John Stewart (Line #3 of this branch above).
- Their children are presented under John's entry above.
- James STEWART b: 1792 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. James moved to Clapham, Yorkshire, England and married a woman named Louisa. Stewarts of the South says that James became "a clark in London." According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account, "James, another uncle of mine, left there [Glen Finglas] and went to England, and was factor on properties in Lancashire. His daughter married the Honourable Viscount Peel, Lord Ashton." (This would appear to be Arthur Wellesley Peel, 1st Viscount Peel, MP and Speaker of the House of Commons, 3 AUG 1829 to 24 OCT 1912 who is recorded as having married Adelaide Dugdale and having had a son William Wellesley Peel, 2nd Viscount Peel, later Earl Peel, b 1929. Mrs Stewart of Milton's claim here is hard to fathom: that a Viscount would marry a clerk's daughter who descended from a farming family in Glen Finglas. However, the daughter in question was her first-cousin, so one would think she'd have first-hand knowledge, despite the fact that she had at least 24 Stewart surnamed first-cousins (and an unknown number of first-cousins by her aunts who married non-Stewarts whom we are not tracking.) It seems far more likely that one of these daughters married someone in the employ of the Viscount, rather than the Viscount himself. James is found in 1851 residing in Clapham, Yorkshire, England with the following family. He is shown as born in Glenfinglas, Perthshire, Scotland and is employed as a land agent and farmer of 70 acres. James and his family have not been found in census records after 1851 and may have emigrated. James married on 4 FEB 1834 in St Mary, Luton, Bedford, England, near London, to Louisa DYER, b 1810 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. They had the following children:
- Mary Louise STEWART b: ABT 25 APR 1835 in Clapham, Yorkshire, England
- Jessie Henrietta STEWART b: ABT 13 DEC 1836 in Clapham, Yorkshire, England
- Charles James STEWART b: ABT 1 JUN 1840 in Clapham, Yorkshire, England
- Katharine STEWART b: ABT 4 JUN 1793 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Katharine is shown in 1851 living in Coilantogle, unmarried. Mrs Stewart of Milton says that Katherine died in Coilantogle unmarried.
Margaret STEWART b: 1796 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Margaret married on 8 APR 1832 in Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland to James WHYTE b: ABT 1790 in Devonhill. Their later descendants can be found here.
Janet Mackie WHYTE, b. ABT 26 Jul 1831 in Govan, Lanark, Scotland.
William Stewart WHYTE, b. 02 MAR 1833 in Govan, Lanark, Scotland.
Alexander "Sandy" Donachie STEWART, in Auchnahard, b: 1797 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Alexander never married nor had children. Alexander is described in Stewarts of the South as being "with his father at Glenfinglas" ca. 1815-1820. The Ardvorlich History shows no family for him. According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account, Alexander resided at Duart for a while with his nephew Duncan Stewart, brother to Mrs. Stewart in Milton. She mentions later: "Alexander Stewart in Auchnahard was designed Alastir Donachie Donachie being my grandfather (on fathers side). The other Alexander in Glenfinlas was Alastir Rob. Robert being my husbands
grandfather(uncle) [grandfather]." The 1881 census shows Alexander living at Glenfinglas Road, Achnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.- Robert STEWART, in Drunkie (Invertrossachs) in Port of Menteith, b: ABT 1801 in Invertrossach, Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He married on 16 JAN 1835 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Mary STEWART b: 25 JUL 1811 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of Walter Stewart, 2nd of Lorachan and Edraleachdach (Branch V of the Glenbuckie Stewarts) and Elizabeth McDonald of the Monachyle family. Stewarts of the South says Robert was "with his father at Glenfinglas" ca. 1815-1820. The Ardvorlich History describes Robert as: "Robert, a farmer at Drunkie, who married Monachyle's sister, and had one daughter who married Duncan, now in Monachyle, another married John Stewart of the Milton." However, it was actually Robert's mother-in-law who was Monachyle's sister. Robert and Mary Stewart had the following children:
- Elisabeth STEWART b: ABT 21 FEB 1836 in Tarnduin, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 1 SEP 1859 in Duddington, Portobello, Midlothian, Scotland to James MORISON b: ABT 8 MAY 1836 in St. Nicholas, Aberdeen, Scotland. They had the following children:
- James Fletcher MORISON b: 28 MAY 1859 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
- Robert Walter Carruthers MORISON b: 16 JUN 1860 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Mary Agnes Johnstone MORISON b: 11 MAR 1862 in Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland
- William Atherton MORISON b: 20 JUL 1863 in Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland
- Jessie Scott Moyes MORISON b: 27 FEB 1865 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Mary STEWART b: ABT 7 MAY 1838 in Tarnduin, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 14 JUN 1859 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Duncan STEWART b: ABT 2 JUL 1809 in Monachyle, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, son of Duncan Stewart and Ann McDonald of the Stewarts of Glenogle and Monachyle. Mary and Duncan had the following children:
- John McDonald STEWART b: 5 DEC 1863 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
- Mary Ann STEWART b: 4 JUL 1871 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
- Margaret STEWART b: ABT 25 FEB 1840 in Tarnduin, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Christina STEWART b: ABT 2 MAR 1842 in Drunkie (Invertrossachs), Strathgartney, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 25 OCT 1872 in Lochan House, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to James LANGMUIR b: 1848 in Scotland.
- Agnes Jane STEWART, "Mrs. Stewart of Milton", b: 5 DEC 1843 in Drunkie (Invertrossachs), Strathgartney, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. Agnes is the "Mrs Stewart of Milton" referenced in The Ardvorlich History. Agnes was the author of an extensive genealogy of her extended family which she dictated to John McGregor of McGregor in 1905, which can be found in full at The Account of Mrs Stewart of Milton and is referenced frequently throughout this page. Agnes married on 30 JAN 1866 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to her cousin, John STEWART of the Milton of Callander (son of Robert Ban Stewart in Auchnahard, above) b: 21 NOV 1815 in Milton, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
- Their children are presented above under John Stewart of the Milton.
- Duncan STEWART b: ABT 29 JAN 1846 in Drunkie (Invertrossachs), Strathgartney, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account, "Duncan Stewart, my only brother, lived there [Duart] for some time with his uncle Alexander. Duncan left and went to live about Dunblane." The Ardvorlich History says that Duncan married Mary Liddon although no record of their marriage has been found. Duncan is found in 1891 residing in Glenfinglas Farm House, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland with 24 year old Mary A Leyden, b 1867 in Dunblane, Perthshire. She is employed as Duncan's housekeeper. Thus, it would appear that Duncan married his housekeeper. They have not been found in 1901.
Duncan is presumed to have married to Mary LIDDON b: ABT 1850 in Scotland, although no record of their marriage has been found. They had the following children:
- Mary STEWART b: AFT 1891 in Scotland
- John STEWART b: AFT 1891 in Scotland
- Robina STEWART b: ABT 4 JAN 1849 in Drunkie (Invertrossachs), Strathgartney, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. Robina married on 5 FEB 1878 in Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland to Nathaniel CORSON b: ABT 15 JAN 1850 in Durisdeer, Dumfries, Scotland. They had the following family:
- George Stewart CORSON b: 1 AUG 1878 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Robert Stewart CORSON b: 31 DEC 1879 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Janet "Jessie" STEWART b: ABT 5 MAY 1803 in Brenchoil, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Janet is described in The Ardvorlich History as "Jessie Dullater, who had no family." There are two Dullaters: Easter and Wester. They probably resided at Easter which is directly across the Eas Gobhain (Smith's Water) from Coilantogle. Brenchoil is on Loch Katrine. According to Mrs Stewart of Milton's account: "Janet married ___ McLaren from Ardchulary and died in Dullater." Janet married on 18 APR 1843 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland to Dugald MCLAREN of Ardchullary b: 3 JUL 1806 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. They resided at Dullater, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland and had no children.
Peter STEWART b: 1803 in Coilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Peter is described in Stewarts of the South as being "with his father at Glenfinglas" ca. 1815-1820. According to Mrs Stewart of Milton's Account: "Peter, Married ___ Stewart, and died in Colintogle." Peter is found in 1851 residing at Coilantogle with his brother John and sister Catherine. In 1861 and 1871 Peter is found in Coilantogle with his family. Peter married on 29 JAN 1856 in Alloa, Clackmanan, Scotland to his cousin Elizabeth "Betsey" STEWART b: 1827 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of Robert Ban Stewart (above). They had the following children:
- Duncan STEWART b: 26 JUN 1859 in Tarndun, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Duncan is not found with his parents in 1861 or 1871 and is presumed to have died in infancy.
- Catharine STEWART b: 13 SEP 1862 in Tarndun, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 26 FEB 1879 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to William DOW b: 5 NOV 1859 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following family:
- Elizabeth DOW b: ABT 1878 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Jane DOW b: ABT 1880 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Elizabeth STEWART b: 1804 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. According to Mrs Stewart of Milton, Elizabeth never married and died in Glenfinglas. Inventory of the Estate of Elizabeth Stewart, Sometime Residing at Glenfinglass, Parish of Callander, d. on or about 1 Mar 1852 in Callander. Inventory made and reported by her brother, John Stewart, tenant of Cullintogle, near Callander. L 241-9-6. Registered at Dunblane, 20 Jul 1852, in the Commissary Court Books of the Western District of Perthshire, pages 310-312.
The next line of descendants of Iain Buidh Mhor Stewart of the Bains of Glenfinglas was one Walter Stewart in Dunan, Ardvorlich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Walter is described in Stewarts of the South as:
There was one Walter, cousin to Doal Ban Mor, tacksman in Ardvorlich, who left four sons:
1. William Stewart, schoolmaster at Summerline Flanders Moss, who has three sons:
A merchant in Hamburgh. (Germany?)
A clark in Glasgow.
An assistant to his father at Summerline.
2. His second son is in Lord Down's (Doune's) work. He has four sons:
the oldest [are] Massons
(not mentioned but the plural preceding would imply that the second son was also a mason)
the third a wright
the four is a servant man
3 Line. Alexander Stewart at Crochavie, Aberfoil parish, under the Lordship of Monteith, now belonging to the Duke of Montrose. Alexander has one son:
- Charles.
There was one Duncan Stewart Brother to....
The reference to "Doal Ban Mor" is problematic. It can be interpreted two ways: either as a transliteration of "Domhnall", the Gaelic form of Donald, which is pronounced similar to "Doh-al"; or it could be a transcription error for "John Ban Mor". This makes it unclear if Walter is a cousin of the previously mentioned John Ban Mor in Auchnahard, or if there was an additional Donald Ban Mor. As we have no other evidence of a Donald Stewart in Auchnahard at the time nor did Walter Stewart in Dunan have any descendants named Donald, then the simpler option is preferred -- that Doal Ban Mor is a transcription error for John Ban Mor.
The Comrie OPR reveals that Walter resided at Dunan (also spelled "Dounan" in the OPR, "Downen" on an early map (at right), and "An Dunan" on modern maps). Dunan (prounced "doo-nan" or "down-an") means "little hill" and is located on the Ardvorlich estate above Balimeanach. The 18th century map clearly shows a residence located at Dunan, however today it is nothing more than a grassy hill on the climb up Ben Vorlich.
Stewarts of the South says that Walter had four sons, but the Comrie OPR reveals only three sons. There is a significant gap between the date of Walter's marriage and the birth of his first son. Thus it is unclear if the missing son was born prior to Alexander in 1745 or after John in 1749. To add further confusion, Stewarts of the South shows William as the first son; whereas the Comrie OPR shows William as the middle son. Thus we cannot rely on onomastic evidence to help us identify Walter's father.
Walter's son, William, is easily identified. He is found in the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Census residing at 14 Summer's Lane with his wife Sarah Mclean and their children. They are recorded as having resided on the Moss for 14 years and having come from "Lochearnside".
The remainder of Walter's children are more elusive. Although we know the names of two of Walter's other sons it is not clear which of them is the "second son (who) is in Lord Down's work", since William was in fact the second born son. Stewarts of the South then goes on to a new paragraph beginning "3 Line". It's unclear from this reference if the "3 Line" refers to the 3rd son of Walter or the 3rd line of descendants of Bains of Glenfinglas family. Stewarts of the South lists "Alexander Stewart at Crochavie" under 3 Line. As Walter did have a son named Alexander then this Alexander could be the third son of Walter, or he could be a distant cousin. 3 Line concludes with the reference to "Duncan Stewart, brother to..." as shown above. Since there appears to be text missing here then we don't know who Duncan was brother to. Is he the fourth son of Walter (not found in the Comrie OPR)? Or is he another distantly related cousin line?
It is unclear from the original whether "3 Line" is a new descendant line altogether or if it represents the 3rd (and 4th) sons of Walter Stewart in Ardvorlich.
We account for this family as follows:
Walter STEWART , in Dunan b: ABT 1710 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland as a grandson of John Buidhe Mor Stewart, 1st in Auchnahard by an unknown father. Walter is described in Stewarts of the South as: "There was one Walter, cousin to Doal (sic, "John") Ban Mor, tacksman in Ardvorlich, who left four sons." Comrie OPR records reveal that Walter resided at Dunan (also spelled "Dounan" in the OPR, "Downen" on an 18th century map, and "An Dunan" on modern maps). Walter married on 31 DEC 1742 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Agnes STEWART b: ABT 1720 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Her birth record has not been identified. They had the following children:
A potential match has been found with: Duncan McFarlane married Agnes Stewart, 13 MAY 1811 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. They had only one son, John McFarlan, 25/29 FEB 1812 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. This is the only marriage for an Agnes/Anne Stewart 1806-1816 nearby to the Moss.
The following births are also found in Dunan and may be related to the above family:
John STEWART and Janet DEWAR in Dunan of Ardvorlich
- Duncan STEWART, bap 24 SEP 1693 in Domnan (Dunan) of Ardvorlich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
Robert STEWART and Janet STEWART in Dunan
- Christian STEWART, bap 23 JUN 1717 in Dunine
- Katharine STEWART, bap 19 APR 1719 in Dunine

The next line of descendants of the Bains of Glenfinglas is described in Stewarts of the South as:
Alexander Stewart at Crochavie, Aberfoil parish, under the Lordship of Monteith, now belonging to the Duke of Montrose. Alexander has one son:
- Charles.
There was one Duncan Stewart Brother to....
The accounting of the original is extremely confusing here. This line can be interpreted in two ways. This Alexander could be the third son of Walter Stewart in Dunan, shown above. Or this Alexander may represent a new descendant line independently descended from Ian Buighe Mor Stewart, 1st in Auchnahard.
Similarly with the closing reference to Duncan Stewart. He could be the missing fourth son of Walter Stewart in Dunan, or he too could be independently descended. The text is missing so we are robbed of knowing who Duncan was brother to, which could have helped us in setting these lines in their proper context.
The only Charles Stewart, son of Alexander Stewart, that we can find in the OPRs about the right time is the following family. It is clear by the multiple marriages and same-named births that we are looking at several families convoluted here. Until we are able to examine the OPR entries for each we will not be able to sort out these families. For now we leave this as a research lead in progress.
Alexander Stuart and Janet Stuart, m 20 MAY 1765 in Callander, 28 FEB/12 MAR 1767 in Balq/Callander, 7/8 APR 1771 in Balq/Callander, or 2 JAN 1787 in Callander
- John Stewart 16 JUL 1773 in Port of Menteith
- John Stewart 19 AUG 1773 in Port of Menteith
- Alexander Stuart, 25 AUG 1775 in Port of Menteith
- Alexander Stuart, 25 AUG 1778 in Port of Menteith
- James Stewart, 10 JUN 1781 in Port of Menteith
- Walter Stewart, bap 20 JUL 1784 in Port of Menteith
- Charles Dugald Stuart, bap 21 FEB 1790 in Port of Menteith
- Jannet Stewart, 25/28 DEC 1794 in Callander
- Mary Stewart 16/17 MAY 1800 in Callander
The next line of descendants of the Bains of Glenfinglas is described in Stewarts of the South as follows:
Walter Stewart, tacksman of Toighbhavid, Callander parish, Sir Patrick Murray's property -- a new purchase. Walter left one son:
- Alexander Stewart, late farmer at Auchlow (Auchtow), Balquhidder, on Sir John Murray's estate. He is now at Callander with
- four sons who are minors.
According to Stewarts of the South, Tighbhavid is located in Callander parish however we have been unable to locate it.
There are two families found in the Callander OPR who are both very close matches for this description. Each family has a second son named Alexander, so we must presume that if either of these are correct then the eldest son died young. One family is in Auchnahard which as the Bains' family property and the other family was in Duart which was just across from Auchnahard and is where John Ban Mor formerly lived. The two Alexanders were born only 3 years apart making both candidates chronologically equal also, and both capable of having for underage sons in 1815. So each of these is equally plausible and we have no means by which to prefer one family over the other.
Walter STEWART and Mary MCFARLANE in Auchnahard, m 21 MAR 1726 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland.
Jannet STEWART b/b 12/15 unknown month 1727 in Achnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.

Hugh STEWART, b/b 9/12 AUG 1746 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
Alexander STEWART, b/b 1/3 FEB 1748 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
Janet STEWART, b/b 23/25 APR 1749 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
Walter STEWART and Janet STEWART in Duart (family not in database), m 18 APR 1748 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
Alexander STEWART, b/b 1 AUG 1751 in Duart, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
John STEWART, b/b 8 AUG 1753 in Duart, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
Margaret STEWART, b/b 2/4 DEC 1755 in Duart, Glenfinglas, Callander Perthshire, Scotland.
Catharine STEWART, b/b 17/21 APR 1758 in Duart, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.

The final line of descendants of John Buidhe Mor Stewart, 1st in Auchnahard, is described in Stewarts of the South as:
John Stewart, brother to the above Walter, at Burn of Camus, Down lodge. He left one son:
- John Stewart, a shoemaker who has four sons:
- 1st son is a mason
- 2nd is a slater
- 3rd is a wright
- 4th is a tailor
Again, the accounting in the original is confusing. The reference "brother to the above Walter" could refer either to Walter Stewart in Dunan or Walter Stewart in Toighbhavid.
Cambusburn is located in Kilmadock parish. There are no matching births in the Kilmadock OPR that fit with this family.
The following family in Cambusburn might descend from this branch:
Robert STEWART , in Buchany, b 1776 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. Census and OPR records show Robert as a blacksmith (wright). He resided in 1841 in the village of Buchany and in 1851 in Burn of Cambus, both in Kilmadock parish. He is recorded in Mitchell's MIs as being a feuer in Buchany. He married on 20 DEC 1822 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Agnes FORBES b: 1789 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following family:

Alexander STEWART and Bettrice STEWART in Auchnahard, m 14 DEC 1742 or 18 MAY 1747 in Callander (both entries say "both in this parish"). This is probably Alexander in Bochastle of the Edraleachdoch family.

= This person has known descendants.
ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:
Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.
Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month. Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.
Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
