Welcome to the Canadian Prangley family page of my family history website. This page covers the family of Alexander Donald Sharpe's maternal grandmother, Mary Jane Prangley and many of her distant cousins. Our Prangley family were pioneer settlers in Kent County, and Lambton County, Ontario from the early 1800s. However this page has now been expanded to try to cover all Canadians with the surname Prangley. Their ancestors came from Corsley, Wiltshire, England.
Please Note: This page is intended only as a narrative historical overview of this family. There is additional detailed information available for almost ever person presented on this page. To avoid the unnecessary work of double-entering some data, the additional information can be found in the accompanying GEDCOM database. Please make sure you click on the INDEX button at the bottom of the page so you don't miss out on potentially valuable additional information.

The origin of the surname of Prangley is presented on the Prangleys of Corlsey page.
Note: In the following entries you may find some confusion regarding the place names of Euphemia Township, Bothwell Township, Lambton County, Kent County and Bothwell County. This confusion is caused by the fact that county names and boundaries have changed in the last 100 years. Today Bothwell is a township located in Kent County on the border with Euphemia Township in Lambton County. However in 1881 Bothwell was a county and Euphemia Township was part of Bothwell County. Today, Bothwell County no longer exists.
The earliest Canadian Prangleys all descend from the family of Esau Prangley and Elizabeth Denmead of Corsley, Wiltshire, England, however other Prangleys continued to immigrate to Canada in later generations (see Qubec Prangleys below). The children of Esau and Elizabeth Prangley settled in Bothwell, Lambton, and Kent counties which are all located adjacent to each other in the extreme south-west of Ontario between the cities of London and Windsor. Some descendants of this family remain in those three counties to this day, while others are scattered all across North America.
Esau Prangley of the Corsley family married Elizabeth Denmead of Corsley, Wiltshire on 1 NOV 1813.
Married by John Griffith, Curate and witnesses James Fowles, Ann Hedges and Cornelius Prangley. [Corsley Bishop's Transcripts]
They had the following children:
By 1860 Census, Albion, Jackson, Wisconsin. Age 40, a teamster from Pennsylvania.
John Jennings adds: the listing of birth place as Pennsylvania in 1860 Census probably indicates this is not the same Levi.
These children are each discussed in more detail below.
The property of Charles T. Prangley can be seen in the loop of the river immediately west of Dawn Mills.
The eldest son, Charles Prangley, was the first of this family to immigrate to Canada. Charles was only 15 years old when he came to Canada in 1830. He settle first in Euphemia Township, Lambton County, in what was then still the Upper Canada Colony of British North America. It would be another 40 years before the area would become Ontario, Canada. Charles was followed very shortly thereafter by his entire birth family.
Charles was one of many men sent to Canada at the expense of the Corsley parish due the poverty that existed in the labouring communities at that time. He sailed from Newport South Wales in 1830 and arrived in Quebec some three months later. Charles' parents, Esau and Elizabeth Prangley, together with their remaining children came to Canada later that same year. They also settled in Euphemia Township where they had four more children.
Charles Prangley did not stay in Euphemia Township, but ended up just a few miles to the west in Kent County, where Charles married Alice Ann Taylor and went into business with Alice's father, Captain William Taylor of Dawn Mills. Charles Prangley ran his father-in-law's mill. Since William Taylor owned three mills, it is unclear which one (or more) of them Charles ran. When Capt. Taylor died, his son Thomas inherited his father's portion of the family businesses.
The story of Captain William Taylor and the Dawn Mills Settlement can be found on the Dawn Mills Families page.
Thomas Taylor sold his share of one of the mills to Charles Prangley who then became the sole owner and proprietor. As a local history recounts the name of the mill as the "Prangley Mill", not the "Taylor Mill", it is believed that Charles Prangley must have had a substantial impact on the Dawn Mills community. The Taylor descendants left Dawn Mills for Chatham, which ultimately led to the economic demise of Dawn Mills, while on the other hand, Charles Prangley remained in Dawn Mills. This could explain the village's affection for him.
The Prangley Mill
Even though William Taylor built the mills of Dawn Mills, it is his son-in-law Charles Prangley whose name is preserved in the local geography. The Prangley Mill no longer exists. All that remains are the ruins of its foundation. The overgrown ruins can still be seen just west of the Dawn Mills bridge and just east of the road which bears the family name, the Prangley Road.
Charles Prangley was born 14 APR 1815 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England, and married on 30 MAR 1843 in Dawn Mills, Kent County, Ontario to Alice Ann Taylor. Alice was born 16 FEB 1819 in New York, New York, USA as the daughter of Captain William Taylor and Sarah Chew. Charles Prangley became a partner in Taylor's mills in Dawn Mills. When Captain Taylor died, his son Thomas Taylor sold the remaining share of one of those mills to Charles Prangley whose family kept the mill active in Dawn Mills for at least another generation.
Charles Prangley and Alice Taylor had seven children:

Canadian WWI recruiting documents suggest that the various branches of this family remained in contact with each other and/or continued to leave England for Canada as late as 1915-16. These documents reveal a Frank Prangley of Montreal, Qubec, born 31July 1884 in Wiltshire, England brother of Steven Pringley (residing in Berry-?empton, Qubec) who registered for service in the Royal Canadian Forces in 1916. Sgt. Sidney Prangley was married and living in Bury, Qubec in 1916 when he was recruited to serve. He was born 10 Dec 1889 in Wiltshire, England. He was a brother to Frank and Steven listed above.
These brothers were all from the following family. As with all the Prangleys on this page they were descended from the Prangleys of Corsley, Wiltshire, England. More information on their ancestors can be found on the Corsley Prangley Page.
Elisha PRANGLEY b: ABT 16 SEP 1849 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. He married ABT SEP 1876 in Wellsbourne, Warwickshire, England to Eliza PERKS b: ABT 1852 in Warminster Wellsbourne, Warwickshire, England (daughter of William PERKS and Elizabeth HITCHMAN. d. 12 Oct 1931 in Stanstead Quebec CANADA, buried 14 Oct 1931 in St Paul's Cemetery Bury Quebec CANADA, occupation 1901 Charwoman. 1881 Census, Dartford, Corsley, Wiltshire, England. 1891 Census, Lower Whitbourne, Corsley, Wiltshire. Eliza: 1901 Census, 10 Emwell St., Warminster, Wiltshire. In 1902 she remarried George Arnold
Many of the descendants of this family immigrated to Qubec, Canada. It is not known of the entire family emigrated or just those noted below. Elisha and Eliza had the following children:
The Great Fire of 1922, often referred to as "The Haileybury Fire," has been over the years, the most widely written account of any single event occurring in the Temiskaming area of Ontario. Many authors have previously narrated the story of the catastrophic fire, which on October 4, ravaged eighteen townships and obliterated 90 percent of the Town of Haileybury. The Great Fire covered 648 square miles reached into 18 townships, and affected the lives of 1,744 families. Six million dollars of property were lost in the fifteen-hour blaze. Haileybury residents alone incurred over half the total loss. Every public building in Haileybury burned except the high school. Miraculously only 43 people died in all the confusion, terror, and severity of the fire.
They had the following children. This branch is being researched by Nancy Dixon.

Sarah PRANGLEY was born 10 MAY 1804 and baptized 3 NOV 1805 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Potter Prangley and Jane Prangley of Corsley, Wiltshire, England. Her birth family is presented on the Prangleys of Corsley Page. She would have been a first cousin to Charles Prangley, the miller of Dawn Mills in the family above. It is believed that she is the same Sarah Prangley who married on 5 MAY 1822 in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England to George CROUCH b: 6 MAY 1806 in Wiltshire, Wiltshire, England. It is not confirmed that Sarah Prangley, daughter of Nathaniel and Jane Prangley is the same one who married George Crouch, however onomastics suggests she is a better candidate than the only other known Sarah Prangley. George and Sarah immigrated in 1837 or 1842 to Bothwell County, Ontario, Canada, nearby to Esau Prangley, below. They had the following children:
Albert PRANGLEY - 1901 Census shows an Albert Prangley living in High River, Alberta and working as a domestic servant to the Riley family. He was born 5 JUN 1876 in Ontario. He could be a grandson of George Prangley of Strathroy, perhaps through an unknown child of his first marriage. However, he is now believed to be the Albert Prangley, shipped as one of Dr. Bernardo's Children in 1889. As a domestic servant, his employers, who likely gave the census data, likely didn't know where he was born and assumed Ontario, or, understandably, he may not have told them the truth. He is believed to be Edward Albert Prangley, son of Frank Prangley and Maria Hill shown as born 1875 in Stourbridge, Worcester, England, and who later immigrated to New Zealand where he married and had descendants.
