Introduction

This page is a continuation of the study of pioneer families in Puslinch Township with the surname Stewart. If you are just arriving here from somewhere else then you may wish to begin with the introduction page From Perthshire to Puslinch -- The Stewart Pioneer Families of Puslinch.

Here I present some of the remaining Stewart families of Puslinch that do not fit into one of the three principal families.  These families are "stray" only in that they do not fit into my arbitrarily chosen principal families. They are no less pioneer Stewart families of Puslinch.

If you are aware of any other Stewarts who were pioneers in Puslinch Township, or who lived in Puslinch prior to 1900, whom you feel should be added to this page, then please contact me.

William Stewart of Ben Nevis, Inverness, Scotland

The following includes excerpts from the article "The Stewarts of Crieff" by the late Anna Jackson of the Puslinch Historical Society. Reprinted with permission.

"William Stewart 1800-1878, no relation to the [Crieff] Stewarts*, was born at the foot of Ben Nevis and emigrated to lot 23 rear first in 1835. On December 31, 1840 he married Catherine McPherson, daughter of Donald Dhu McPherson. Walter Scott and John McDiarmid were the witnesses. William was one of the movers for a Presbyterian congregation in Puslinch, and it was he who was delegated to carry the petition for the first church property to Toronto in 1837.

Their family was Donald who married Margaret Bell; Isabella (Mrs. Gillies McBain); Margaret (Mrs. Alexander McCallum); and Angus 1848-1929 who married Mary Ann (Polly) McWilliams.

Donald and Margaret Bell Stewart lived on lot 22 rear first. Mrs. Stewart 1859 was the daughter of Richard and Mary Thompson Bell; she died in her 100th year. Their family was William who died age 37; Mary 1891 (Mrs. Marshall Cochrane); Annie 1893 (Mrs. Richard Paddock); and Jennie May 1896 (Mrs. G.H. Gillies). This family all moved away.

Isabella Stewart (Mrs. Gillies McBain), and Margaret Stewart (Mrs. Alexander McCallum) immigrated to different parts of Michigan and the two sisters never saw each other again.

Angus Stewart continued on the homestead, married Mary (Polly) McWilliams in 1885 and raised three daughters Catherine (Mrs. Hector McCaig); Isabel 1892 (Mrs. Arthur Evans); and Margaret 1889-1983 who did not marry. This family was very active in the church. Angus Stewart served both as Secretary and as Treasurer on the Board of Managers. Angus was known locally as Angus "King" Stewart, and his wife was "Queen."

The family of William Stewart of Ben Nevis, Inverness, Scotland, was later related by marriage to the Crieff Stewarts, as members of both families married daughters of Donald Dhu MacPherson.

William Stewart was born in 1800 at the "foot of Ben Nevis" in Inverness, Scotland.  He married on 31 MAY 1840 in Duff's Presbyterian Church, Puslinch Twp., Wellington Co., Ont. to Catharine McPherson.  She was born 14 NOV 1803 in Kingussie (Badenoch), Inverness, Scotland as the daughter of Donald Dhu McPherson and Catharine McPherson.  William and Catharine had the following children:

John Stewart of Scotland

This family is being researched by John McEwen.

John Stewart
1851 census image

John STEWART was born in 1798 in Perthshire, Scotland (according to his gravestone).  His exact place of birth is not known.  John Stewart married Jane, whose last name may have been McLean.  They were married about 1822 in Scotland and began their family there.  They had three children before 1829 and then sometime between 1829-1835 they emigrated from Scotland to Canada.  However no record of their marriage or the births of any of their Scotland-born children has so far been found.  John and Jane settled on lot 12-front, concession 2, Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario (according to the old concession numbering system).  In Puslinch they had two more children.  John is buried in Killean Cemetery in West Puslinch.

John and Jane Stewart had the following known descendants:

  1. Has Children Alexander STEWART b: ABT 1822 in Scotland.  He married on 21 DEC 1848 in Duff's Presbyterian Church, Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario to Jane MCCAIG b: ABT 1825 in River Denys, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, probably as the daughter of Hector McCaig.  In 1881 the family was residing in Galt, Waterloo South, Ontario though Alexander was deceased.  No death record has been found for him so he likely died prior to the commencement of public records in 1869.  They had the following known child:
    1. John STEWART, b 1855 in Galt (Cambridge), Wellington County, Ontario, Canada (res 1881 with widowed mother and brother), occ moulder
    2. Hector STEWART b: 1861 in Galt (Cambridge), Wellington Co., Ontario, occ 1881 carpenter
  2. Has Children James STEWART b: ABT 1823 in Scotland who married Betsy SINCLAIR.  She was born ABT 1833 in Scotland.  They owned the front lot 12 adjacent to James' parents property.  In the 1851 Census he is found in Stratford, but he must have been just visiting as he remained on the Puslinch farm until 1875. Puslinch Historical Society records (probably originating with a family record) indicate that James and his family moved "out west", which may be a spurious reference.  In 1881 they can be found living on the Bruce Peninsula, Bruce County, Ontario nearby to the family of Archibald Stewart (from Argyll, shown below). Whether they later moved further "out west" is not known at this time. They had the following children:
    1. Has No Children Catherine STEWART b: 14 MAY 1853 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    2. Has No Children John STEWART b: 1855 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    3. Has No Children Jane STEWART b: 1857 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    4. Has No Children Mary STEWART b: 1859 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    5. Has No Children Alexander STEWART b: ABT 1861 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario.  He worked as a blacksmith and died at age 20.
    6. Has No Children Elizabeth STEWART b: 1864 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    7. Has No Children James STEWART b: 1866 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    8. Has No Children Archabald STEWART b: ABT 1869 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    9. Has No Children Peter STEWART b: ABT 1872 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario
  3. Has No Children Peter STEWART b: ABT 1825 in Scotland who married Flora MCMASTER.  Peter was a carpenter.  According to http://puslinch.bravepages.com/con.1F%20lots%206-10.htm Peter and Flora moved to North Dakota in the late 19th century.  Three daughters can be found residing in Tiverton, Bruce County, Ontario and being married there in the early 1880s. However there is no record of any of this family in the 1881 census. Neither is there any record of them in any American census in North Dakota for any year. One of Peter's sons-in-law is recorded as residing in North Dakota at the time of his marriage in Tiverton. That's as close as I can find to a connection to North Dakota.  There is a record in the 1871 census index for a Peter Stewart, b abt 1821, residing in Grey Township, Huron North, Ontario who is a close match. The full record has not been consulted.  Otherwise, this family seems to elude census records!  They had the following children:
    1. Has No Children Mary STEWART b: 1854 in Ontario, Canada.  Mary married on 13 APR 1880 in Underwood(?), Bruce County, Ontario, Canada to Alexander MCKINNON b: 1852 in Ontario, Canada.
    2. Has No Children Catherine Cook STEWART b: 1859 in Ontario, Canada.  Catherine married on 6 MAY 1880 in Tiverton, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada to Peter CAMERON b: 1855 in Ontario, Canada.
    3. Has No Children Lillian STEWART b: 1861 in Ontario, Canada.  Lillian married on 29 MAR 1883 in Tiverton, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada to James BUCHANAN b: 1858 in Ontario, Canada.
  4. Has Children Elizabeth STEWART b: 1829 in Scotland.  She married on 1852 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario to Walter MCMILLAN, a farm hand from Puslinch, who may have been working on the Stewart farm.  They lived with Elizabeth's parents until 1859 when they moved north to Minto Township, Wellington County.  They had the following children:
    1.     Mary MCMILLAN b: 1854 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    2. Has No Children John MCMILLAN b: 1856 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    3. Has No Children Dugald MCMILLAN b: 1859 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    4. Has No Children James MCMILLAN b: 1860 in Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    5. Has No Children Alexander MCMILLAN b: 1862 in Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    6. Has No Children Joan MCMILLAN b: 1865 in Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    7. Has No Children Sarah E. MCMILLAN b: 1867 in Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario
    8. Has No Children Dugald MCMILLAN b: 1870 in Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario
  5. Has No Children Jane STEWART b: ABT 1835 in Puslinch Twp. Wellington Co., Ontario.  Jane married Duncan MCNAUGHTON b: 1836 in Scotland.  They had the following children:
    1. Has No Children James MCNAUGHTON b: 1858 in Ontario, Canada
    2. Has No Children John MCNAUGHTON b: 1860 in Dover Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada
    3. Has No Children Isabella MCNAUGHTON b: 1862 in Dover Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada

    5. Has No Children Alexander MCNAUGHTON b: 1866 in Dover Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada
    6. Has No Children Jane MCNAUGHTON b: 1869 in Dover, Kent County, Ontario, Canada
    7. Has No Children Jennett MCNAUGHTON b: 1871 in Dover Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada
    8. Has No Children William MCNAUGHTON b: 28 MAY 1873 in Dover Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada
    9. Has No Children Mary Elizabeth MCNAUGHTON b: 5 NOV 1876 in Raleigh, Kent County, Ontario, Canada
    10. Has No Children Mary MCNAUGHTON b: 1879 in Kent County, Ontario, Canada
  6. Has No Children John STEWART b: ABT 1837 in Puslinch Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario

This Stewart family's farm passed to the son James Stewart in 1861 who also owned the adjacent front lot.  Sometime after 1871 (probably 1875) James sold both lots and moved to an unknown location "out west".  The original family farm was sold in 1875 to John Gilchrist and the front lot was sold in 1875 to Hy Shaumberg.  Although diary records indicate James went "out west", his family can be found in the 1881 census in Bruce County, Ontario.  Whether that was considered "out west" by the unknown diarist, or whether they later moved further "out west" after 1881 is not known.

"Another John Stewart pioneered lot 12, front Second. We have only the record of a diarist who noted that, a difficult spot in the trail that was to become the Second concession, west of Sideroad 10, was known as Stewart's hole because John lost several loads of goods into that quagmire. John Stewart was a subscriber to the lot 15 church in 1851; he died in 1861 (sic. 1858) and his son James, with his wife was Betsy Sinclair had several of their children baptized here before their removal west. One of them may have married Alexander Easton. The children baptized here were Catherine 1853; John 1855; Jane 1857; Mary 1859; Alexander 1861; Elizabeth 1864; and James 1866." -- Excerpted from the article "The Stewarts of Crieff" by the late Anna Jackson of the Puslinch Historical Society. Reprinted with permission.

The family of John Stewart of Scotland raises some interesting prospects. According to descendant John McEwen they came from either Argyllshire or Perthshire, but that does not sufficiently narrow the search enough to identify John Stewart in Scottish records. It is certainly possible that he came from Scotland on his own and settled in Puslinch without any connection to any of the other Stewart families featured in this project. However three tantalizing possibilities are impossible to ignore:

1) He is a reasonably close age to be the John Stewart of the first generation of the Comrie family and that John Stewart's whereabouts are unknown. However his children do not match the naming pattern for the Comrie family -- assuming all the first generation children are known.

2) He is also close to the right age to be one of the unknown sons of John Stewart of the Mountsberg family. Although only the name of Alexander is known among the first generation of that family, if the Mountsberg Stewarts were following Scots naming customs (which it appears that Alexander does, then Alexander would certainly have had a brother named John.   Again, however, the naming pattern does not fit.

3) This family moved to Tiverton, Bruce County, not far from the family of Duncan and Archibald Stewart shown below.  The names Peter and Archibald feature in both families.  Duncan and Archibald below came from Killean, Argyll, Scotland.  This John is buried in Killean cemetery in Puslinch.  John is recorded as being from Perthshire, but family tradition claims that he may have been from Argyll.  John would fit perfectly as an unrecorded brother with Duncan and Archibald below.

No corresponding match for this family has been found in the IGI.  The closest one is:

John STEWART and Jane Nichol m 11 APR 1822 in Perth, Perth, Scotland.

  1. Alexander STEWRT, b/bap 25 FEB/2 MAR 1823 in Perth, Perth, Scotland
  2. James STEWART, b/bap 27 MAR/3 APR 1825 in Perth, Perth, Scotland
  3. John STEWART, b/bap 22/30 SEP 1827 in Perth, Perth, Scotland
  4. Isabella STEWART, b/bap 15/30 MAY 1830 in Perth, Perth, Scotland
  5. Christina STEWART, b 13 MAR 1836 in Perth, Perth, Scotland
  6. Catherine STEWART, b. ABT 1840 in Perth, Perth, Scotland (LDS member submission - probably identical to Christina)

Non-Indexed Stray Stewarts

The following families or individuals are Stewarts who lived in Puslinch but who are not included in any of the three principal families, nor are they included in any of the prominent stray families. They are not included in my computer database either so they do not appear in the family data pages of this website. I have included them here simply because in the course of my research I have stumbled across scraps of information that is convenient to include here. I hope it will be of value to those who may be researching one of these smaller families.  What you see here is all I know of these families.  If you can add further information on any of these families, please contact me.

John Stewart and Agnes Davidson

The Stewarts of Beverly Township

This family is being researched by Kelly Gyurkovits.

There was a family of Stewarts who were early settlers in Beverly Township in Wentworth County, Ontario.  Beverly township is the next township south of Puslinch and the two townships form the border between Wellington County on the north and Wentworth County on the south.  Although this family never actually lived in Puslinch, they did attend first Duff's Presbyterian Church and later Crieff Presbyterian Church, both in Puslinch, and their children's baptisms are recorded in the Puslinch churches.  Some members of this family later moved to Petrolia and Enniskillen, near Sarnia, in Lambton County, Ontario.

This family originates with John STEWART and his wife Agnes DAVIDSON (see photo at right).  They emigrated from Fife, Scotland in June 1834 and settled in Beverly Township, Wentworth County, Ontario.  John died in Beverly while Agnes survived him and moved to Enniskillen with her son John, where she later died.

According to Kelly's family records:

"John Stewart, born near Inverness, Scotland and Agnes [Davidson] born in Inverness, Scotland immigrated to Canada about 1830 to a farm in north Wentworth.  Three sons, William, John, and Robert, were all born in Scotland.  Three daughters, Anne, Christina and Jessie were all born in Scotland.  A fourth daughter, Cartha, was born at sea when coming to Canada."

According to the late Anna Jackson in her article on the Crieff Stewarts for the Puslinch Historical Society:

"Robert Stewart [son of John and Agnes] and Isabella MacKenzie Stewart of lot 18 Tenth of Beverly had their children baptized by Rev. MacLean and they occupied a pew. It is quite possible that it was this Robert Stewart who was the contractor of the building of the 1854 church. It is also presumed that it was this Robert Stewart who led the Service of Praise in the English language while Neil Currie was precantor in Gaelic, before 1864. Their children were John 1858; Donald 1860; Alexander 1862; Margaret Isabella 1864; Agnes 1866; and William 1868."

The Commemorative Biographical Record of Lambton County, Ontario (Toronto, Ontario: J.H. Beers, 1906) presents a thorough biographical sketch of this family.  This material can be found on the Government of Canada website at http://www.ourroots.ca/e/toc.aspx?id=9187 .  Click on the thumbnails at right to read the entire biographical account.

Crieff Cemetery transcriptions show the following:

Stewart, William A. died 12 Nov. 1871 at 3 years and 1 month, son of Stewart, Robert & Isabella.  Daughter, Margaret died 6 Nov 1871 at 7 years and 6 months, and daughter Stewart, Agnes, died 17 Nov 1871 at 5 years and 6 months.

The 1881 census shows:

Location: Beverly Township, Wentworth County, Ontario (source: LDS)

Name  Marital Status Gender Ethnic Origin Age Birthplace Occupation Religion
Robert STEWART   M   Male   Scottish   57   Scotland   Farmer   C. Presbyterian
John STEWART      Male   Scottish   22   O <Ontario>   Farmer   C. Presbyterian
Donald STEWART      Male   Scottish   20   O <Ontario>   Farmer   C. Presbyterian
Alexander STEWART      Male   Scottish   18   O <Ontario>   Farmer   C. Presbyterian
 Margrate I STEWART      Female   Scottish   9   O <Ontario>      C. Presbyterian

It shows Robert Stewart without his wife Isabella and without the two youngest children, Agnes and William, but with a second daughter named Margaret, born after the death of her same-named sister.  Cemetery records confirm that Agnes and William died in 1871.  Robert is mistakenly shown here as married rather than a widower.

The family can now be reconstructed thusly:

    1. James STEWART, born 17 May 1847 in Beverly Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, baptized on 13 Feb 1848 in Duff's Presbyterian Church, Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario.  Recorded as a "natural child".

  5. ROBERT STEWART of Beverly, was born about 1824 in Scotland and died after 1881.  He married about 1855 probably  in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario to Isabella MacKenzie.  She was born about 1827 in Scotland and may have died prior to 1881.  They had the following children:

    1. JOHN STEWART, b. about 1858 in Beverly Township, Wentworth County, Ontario.

  6. WILLIAM STEWART in Australia, b. Scotland; d. aft 1851. Lambton CBR records him as being younger than his brother Robert.  He witnessed his brother John's wedding in 1847.  1851 Farmer's census shows him two doors away from his brother John.  According to the Lambton CBR, William and his family immigrated to Australia "and spent a successful life there and died in 1900."  William married Catherine MCNAUGHTON and had the following child:

May 28, 1882, Beverly Township Wentworth County, Ontario; Burial: June 1882, Crieff Cemetery, Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario.  Lambton CBR says that Cartha was born just before the family emigrated, however the fact that she was named after the ship they sailed on makes it more likely that she was born aboard ship.  She married DAVID GALBRAITH December 15, 1854 in Galt (Cambridge), Wellington, County, Ontario, son of JOHN GALBRAITH and ISOBELLA BULLOCK.  He was born June 10, 1828 in Campsie, Stirlingshire, Scotland, and died November 27, 1901 in Westover, Ontario.  They had the following children:

The Stewart Orphans

This family is being researched by Lawrence Blake of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The next family of Stray Stewarts in Puslinch is the family of Agnes Stewart, possibly the daughter of Robert Stewart and Mary Black, who came to Canada about 1856 with several siblings. They were all orphaned when their mother died, and was buried, at sea. This family never held property in Puslinch although Agnes, after her marriage, did attend Duff's Church.

The overlap of names with the Comrie and Crieff families as well as a similar orphan story to the Comrie Family has led to some confusion with the other Stewart families. Hopefully this information will help future researchers avoid the same confusion.

Agnes' siblings include

bulletJennet Stewart married and died before the others emigrated
bulletJean Stewart married and died before the others emigrated
bulletJennie Stewart married and died before the others emigrated
bulletJohn Stewart, arrived in Canada as an orphan
bulletHugh Stewart, arrived in Canada as an orphan
bulletMary Stewart, arrived in Canada as an orphan
bulletAgnes Stewart, arrived in Canada as an orphan
bulletMaggie Stewart had married a Ramage and was already living in Goderich

Only John, Hugh, Mary, Agnes (age 14) arrived in Canada as orphans. The orphans arrived in Hamilton about 1856. Agnes was employed (1861 census) at Lee's bakery at Main St near John. In 1864 she married Mungo Chapman. Mungo had come to Canada from Scotland in 1856 and, by 1864, was already established as a tenant on lot 19, concession VII in Puslinch. The fate of the other orphans is unknown. Agnes and her husband Mungo Chapman lived in Puslinch for seven years and had 11 children, 4 of them born in Puslinch, and baptized in Duff's Church. The others were born in Arran Township, Bruce County, where the family moved in 1871.

Robert Stewart of Puslinch

This family is being researched by Glenn King and Clark Satre.  Additional descendant information is available from Clarke Satre as this web page only tracks the family as far as their departure from Puslinch.

The following family is found in the 1851 Census in Puslinch residing next door to Alexander McNaughton

Robert Stewart, age 36 (born ca. 1815 in Scotland), a farmer, and his wife Margaret, age 36, both born in Scotland, and their children (all born in Canada):

  1. Robert, age 9,  born ca. 1842
  2. John, age 8,   born ca. 1843
  3. Walter, age 6,   born ca. 1845
  4. Andrew, age 4,   born ca. 1847
  5. Alexander, age 1,  born ca. 1850.

In 1881 Robert is shown living in Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario as a widower, employed as a carpenter.  As you will see below, it appears that carpentry was a multigenerational family trade.

The marriage record for his son, Andrew, shows the family residing in Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario and shows Andrew is also a carpenter:

Ontario Marriage Register - Ashfield township, Huron County - Andrew STEWART, age 29, residing in Lucknow, born in Puslinch, Carpenter, son of Robert and Margaret Stewart, married Mary Jane MALLOUGH, age 26, residing in Ashfield, born in Dungannon [in Ashfield township, Huron County, north of Goderich], daughter of William and Ann Jane Mallough, both Presbyterian, witnessed by Howard Beddie of West Wawahosh and Rebecca Mallough of Ashfield [both just north of Goderich], married on 24 MAR 1880 in Ashfield by Rev. R.W. Leitch. -- submitted by Lilyan Milmosa

Robert STEWART in Buchlyvie, Kippen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, b. ABT 1781 in Scotland.  Robert and his family are found in the 1841 census living in Buchlyvie, Kippen, Stirling, Scotland, a property which belonged to the estate of the family of Graham of Gartmore.  Robert is working as a wright (carpenter) and his birth place is shown as "outside the county" (presumably in Perthshire).  His birth family has been tentatively identified as the Stewarts of Annat Branch IV, however this is uncertain and is still being researched.  Robert married on 30 MAR 1806 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret CARRICK and had the following family:

  1. Walter STUART, b. 19 NOV 1807 and bap. 29 NOV 1807 in Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland.
  2. Andrew STEWART, bap. 14 JAN 1810 in Bo'Ness, West Lothian, Scotland.
  3. Jean STEWART, bap. 19 APR 1812 in Kippen, Stirling, Scotland.  In 1841 she is found residing with her parents in Buchlyvie, Kippen, Stirling, Scotland.
  4. Robert STEWART in Puslinch, bap. 12 JUN 1814 in Kippen, Stirling, Scotland.  According to the 1851 Puslinch census (above), Robert was born about 1815 in Scotland.  He is believed to be the Robert STEWART who was residing in 1841 two miles east of Buchlyvie in Arnprior, Kippen, Stirling, Scotland living as a bachelor and employed as a wright (carpenter).  It is suggested that he was baptized 12 JUN 1814 in Kippin, Stirling, Scotland as the son of Robert Stewart and Margaret Carrick (as shown here).  Robert married on 16 JAN 1842 in Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland and 2 FEB 1842 in Kippin, Stirling, Scotland to Margaret HARROWER.  She is believed to have come from Culross, Perthshire, Scotland and may have been a music teacher.  They immigrated almost immediately following their wedding to Puslinch, Ontario, Canada where they had the following children:
    1. Robert STEWART, b. ABT 1843 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada.  He married on 5 AUG 1880 in East Wawanosh, Huron County, Ontario to Janet MCGOWAN.  She was bap. 20 OCT 1847 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland as the daughter of Walter McGowan and Jane Harrower.  Robert and Janet had the following children:
      1. George McGowan STEWART, b. 1 JUN 1882 in West Wawanosh, Huron, County, Ontario.
      2. Annie Jeanette STEWART, b. 10 JUN 1888 in West Wawanosh, Huron County, Ontario
    2. John Harrower STEWART, b. DEC 1844 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario.  He moved to Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario.  He married about 1868 to Eleanor MILLER.  They had the following children:
      1. Margaret STEWART, b. 29 NOV 1870 in Ontario
      2. George Miller STEWART, b. MAR 1873 in Ontario
      3. Robert STEWART, b. ABT 1875 in Ontario
      4. Walter John STEWART, b. 27 APR 1877 in Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario.
      5. Elizabeth Mary Jane STEWART, b. 1 JAN 1881 in Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario
      6. James STEWART, b. 3 JUN 1883 in Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario
      7. Shirley Eleanor STEWART, b. 1 JUL 1887 in Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario
    3. Walter STEWART, b. 1845 in Puslinch, Wellington County, Ontario.  He married on 31 DEC 1872 in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario to Isabella Moffat.  It is believed that they had no children.

    4. Andrew STEWART, b. 1850 in Puslinch, Wellington, County, Ontario.  He married on 24 MAR 1880 in Huron County, Ontario to Ann Jane MALLOUGH.  He worked as a carpenter.  They had the following children:
      1. William Andrew STEWART, b. 22 JUN 1883 in Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario.
      2. Robert L. STEWART, b. 6 JUN 1885 in Ontario

  7. John STEWART, bap. 18 JUN 1823 in Kippen, Stirling, Scotland.  In 1841 he is residing with his parents in Buchlyvie, Kippen, Stirling, Scotland.

Duncan and Archibald Stewart from Argyll, Scotland

This family is being researched by Kathy Gariepy.

Duncan Stewart came from Argyll and is buried in Crown Cemetery with the following inscription and accompanied by two of his children's graves:

  1. "Duncan Stewart, a native of Cantire (sic s/b Kintyre), Argyllshire, Scotland.  Died July 2, 1880, aged 85 years."
  2. "Mary Stewart, died January 23, 1844, aged 12 years."
  3. "James Stewart, died July 13, 1854, aged 15 years and 3 months."

The death registration for Duncan in 1880, doesn't give any additional information. It says: "died 01 July 1880, born Scotland, Pres., farmer, cause: infirmation of age, Register--James McLean, Inform Alexr McKay." (c/o Brenda Dale)

Donald Whyte, in his book, A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada, (vol. 2, pg. 353) presents an article on a Duncan Stewart and his wife Mary from Argyll who went to West Flamborough:

Duncan Stewart, b. 1794, from Paisley, Renfrew, son of Peter Stewart and Margaret Shaw, to Quebec on the Portaferry, ex Greenoch, ca. 1 MAY 1832.  Went to West Flamborough, Wentworth with James Black qv and obtained property in Puslinch, Wellington.  By wife, Mary, born 1805, had children: 1. Robert, b. 1830; 2. Margaret, b. 1835; 3. Hugh, b. 1837; 4. James, b. 1838; 5. Minnie, b. 1840; 6. Jane, b. 1843. PLP OGF 27, 124.

Whyte appears to have confounded two families here.  This error is understandable (in fact I made the same error myself previously).  There is no record of any children named Robert, Margaret, or Hugh being born to this couple.  Furthermore their genders and ages do not fit with census records.  However there was another Duncan Stewart who lived nearby to this Duncan Stewart who did have children named Robert, Margaret and Hugh whose birth dates correspond exactly with those recorded in Whyte.  It must be that Whyte has mixed the two families together.  The "other" Duncan Stewart can be found on the Duncan Stewart of Puslinch Page.

The passenger list from the Portaferry on May 1832 shows "Duncan Stewart, wife, and three others, from Paisley".  On this same ship are: "James Black, wife and child from Paisley".  Baptism records confirm that Duncan's eldest son Peter was born in Paisley.  It would appear that Duncan immigrated with his wife and his first two children who would have been infant and toddler aged at the time.  There is no record of son Peter in Canada thus it us presumed that he did not survive the journey.

The obituary for Duncan's brother-in-law, James Black, reads:

BLACK, JAMES Death of An Old Resident On Sunday, May 9, 1886, in Aberfoyle, one of the pioneers of Puslinch, James Black, died at the advanced age of 88 years. He was one of the early settlers in this section and had to undergo all the hardships and privations incident to a pioneer life. He entered Puslinch when it was a wilderness in the year 1832, together with his wife, and the late Duncan Stewart, his brother-in- law. They took up lot 15, 8th concession, each of the gentlemen clearing 50 acres which they afterwards exchanged for larger farms, Mr. Black taking lot 18 and Mr. Stewart, lot 17 on the 9th concession. Again Mr. Black had to encounter the hardships previously spoken of. In these days Mr. Black and his wife and Mr. Stewart and his wife, when travelling facilities were nothing like what they are now - thought nothing of walking seven miles to Guelph to attend religious services in the Presbyterian church which was then situated near where the market buildings now stand, the late Rev. Mr. Smith then being the minister. Mr. Black was well known and highly respected in the section. He was a native of Ayrshire (sic - Argyllshire), Scotland. He leaves his widow, 82 years of age and a grown up family, namely: James Black of Aberfoyle, John of Marden, Pete, near Port Elgin, Charles who resides at home and also the eldest daughter, Margaret, Mrs. Dunlop of Kincardine and Mrs. Patmore of Harriston, together with several grandchildren. The funeral took place on Tuesday to the East church burying ground, Puslinch and was largely attended. Mr. Black had been in ill health for the past three years and his death was not unlooked for.

I received correspondence from the late Anna Jackson, of the Puslinch Historical Society, which pertains to this family:

Lot 15, R 8, Registry Office records show that Duncan Stewart and James Black received the patent for the whole 100 acres of Rear Lot 15 from the Crown 1 July, 1856. . They sold it to John McGill 14 Dec. 1850 reserving burying ground.[??] The same day he sold the eastern 50 acres back to Duncan Stewart.

The 1877 atlas map of Puslinch shows Duncan Stewart on F9 lot 17 i.e. across the road and two farms south of the above described farm. James Black was on lot 18.

Duncan Stewart remained on the farm until about 1900 (sic) moved to a house on lot 7 concession 8. She [his wife] is remembered as being fond of gruel with a stick (liquor) in it.

BLACK, MRS. JAMES (Nee Stewart) The body of Mrs. James Black, a former resident of Aberfoyle, who died at her daughters residence in Kincardine on Saturday 12, March 1898 passed through the village today on the way to Crown Cemetery. She was an old resident of this place and was highly respected by all who knew her.

The following records from Crown Cemetery pertain:

C-192 In memory of James Black who died 9 MAY 1886, aged 88 years, native of Argyleshire.  His wife Margaret is not listed as being buried with him, but her obit (above) says she was buried in Crown Cemetery.  It is presumed that her grave is unmarked.
C-193 In memory of Margaret, daughter of James and Margaret Black, died 7 MAY 1890, aged 50 years.

The cemetery transcriptions reveal that James Black was actually from Argyll even though he was listed in the Portaferry passenger list as being from Ayr.  The grave transcriptions also confirm James' wife as Margaret (Stewart).  This is further confirmed by census records below.

The 1840 census shows Duncan "Stuart" residing next door to James Black.  Duncan's household has 1 male under 16, 1 male over 16, 3 females, under 16 and 1 female over 16.  These would be:

  1. Duncan Stewart (m>16)

  2. Mary Stewart (f>16)

    1. James Stewart (m<16)

    2. Mary Stewart (f<16)

    3. Minny (f<16)

    4. daughter (f<16) (Possibly Jane, as there is no record of any other daughter, so it may be that Jane was born earlier than believed.)

The 1851 census presents Duncan's household as:

The IGI shows James BLACK married on 16 FEB 1830 in Paisley Abbey, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland to Margaret STEWART.  However this is a member-submitted record and not an original OPR transcription.  There is no record in the IGI of any child born to this couple.  As daughter Margaret Black would have been only a couple of months old at most when her parents emigrated, then her parents may not have had her baptized beforehand.  This entry could also explain why Duncan was described in the ship's passenger list as being from Paisley.  Data on Margaret Stewart, shown here, matches with the birth information for Duncan's sister, back in Argyll.

Duncan Stewart is found in the 1861 census in Puslinch as follows:

Duncan Stewart, farmer, 60, Scotland and Mary Stewart, 55, Scotland

  1. Minnie Stewart, age 20

  2. Jane Stewart, 17

The 1871 census for Puslinch reveals Duncan living with his recently immigrated brother Archibald and his family.

Stewart, Duncan - farmer age 76; [married]; Mary age 66;[married]  Archibald farmer age 59  [married], Mary age 51 [married]; Peter farmer age 17; Janet born Canada age 15; Duncan age 13 born Canada

Duncan died in 1880 and thus is not found in the 1881 census.  However, his widow is found:

Mary H. STEWART, age 75, born in Scotland, widowed, landlady, Scottish, Presbyterian, residing in Puslinch, Wellington South, Ontario. (LDS)

She is living two doors from her sister-in-law:

  1. James BLACK, age 80, born Scotland, Farmer, Presbyterian

  2. Margaret S. BLACK, age 70, born Scotland, Presbyterian

  3. Margaret BLACK, 45, born Scotland, Presbyterian

  4. Charles BLACK, 25, born Ontario, farmer.

From the above information we can account for this family as follows:

Peter STEWART was born ABT 1770 in Scotland. Onomastics and geography would suggest that Peter may possibly be related to the following family of Stewarts from Kintyre: http://www.islandregister.com/stewart2.html . Peter married on 24 APR 1795 in Killean And Kilchenzie, Kintyre, Argyll, Scotland to Margaret SHAW and had the following children:

  1. Duncan STEWART, bap. 02 MAR 1796 in Killean And Kilchenzie, Kintyre, Argyll, Scotland.  He married Mary HAY.  They immigrated in 1832 to Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada.  They had the following known children:

    1. Peter STEWART, bap. 5 FEB 1831 in Paisley Abbey, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.  The Portaferry ship's manifest indicates that Duncan travelled with three others.  These are presumed to be his wife and first two children.  As there is no record of Peter in Canada, it is presumed he died during the voyage.

    2. Mary STEWART, b. 1832 in Scotland.  She is presumed to be one of the three passengers sailing with her father in 1832.  She died young.

    3. Margaret STEWART, b. 1835 in Puslinch, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada.

    4. James STEWART, b. APR 1839 in Puslinch, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada.  He died young.

    5. Minnie STEWART, b. 1840 in Puslinch, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada.  Minnie married on 17 Apr 1868 in Wellington County to William PATTERSON, s/o Malcolm and Barbara. The marriage record states that Minnie was born in Puslinch to Duncan and Margaret Stuart.  Minnie and William have not been located in any later census records so it is possible that they may have died shortly after their marriage.

    6. Jane STEWART, b. 1843 in Puslinch, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada.

  2. Janet STEWART, bap. 04 MAR 1800 in Killean And Kilchenzie, Kintyre, Argyll, Scotland (double entered with mother also given as "Peggy Shaw")
  3. James STEWART, bap. 09 APR 1802 in Killean And Kilchenzie, Kintyre, Argyll, Scotland (mother not given)
  4. Peggy (Margaret) STEWART, bap. 17 MAY 1804 in Killean And Kilchenzie, Kintyre, Argyll, Scotland (double entered with mother also given as "Peggy Shaw").  Margaret STEWART married on 16 FEB 1830 in Paisley Abbey, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland to James BLACK (date is from a member submitted IGI record, not an OPR transcription).  James was born ABT 1798 in Argyll, Scotland.  James died 9 MAY 1886 in Aberfoyle, Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario, aged 88 years, and is buried in Crown Cemetery, stone says "a native of Argyllshire, Scotland".  Margaret's obit reads: BLACK, MRS. There is no record of Margaret being buried in Crown Cemetery.  It is presumed that her grave is unmarked.  James' obituary is printed above.  James and Margaret had the following children:
    1. Margaret BLACK, b. ABT 1831 in Scotland. (Not found in IGI).  She died a spinster on 7 MAY 1890 in Aberfoyle, Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario and is buried with her father in Crown Cemetery.

Archibald STEWART, b. 19 OCT 1813, bap. 21 OCT 1813 in Campbeltown (aka Kinlochkilkerran), Kintyre, Argyll, Scotland.  Archibald immigrated abt 1854 to Aberfoyle, Puslinch, Wellington County, Ontario Canada.  He is found in 1871 residing with his brother Duncan sharing lot 9-17 as joint freeholders in Puslinch.  Sometime between 1871-1881 (probably in 1880 following the death of his brother Duncan) Archibald and his family moved north to Saugeen, Bruce County, Ontario.  In 1901 he was a widower living with his son Peter in Saugeen.  Archibald Stewart married on 10 APR 1853 in Barony, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland and 16 APR 1853 in High Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland to Mary COMRIE (husband at 40, wife age 34).  They had the following known children:

Peter R. STEWART, born 15 JUL 1853 in Scotland.  According to the 1901 census Peter immigrated to Canada with his wife in 1880.  (He may have used his initial "R" to distinguish himself from Peter Stewart of the Comrie Family.)  Peter R. Donald Stewart in Puslinch

There was a Donald Stewart who spent his entire life as a bachelor farm servant in Puslinch.  He should not be confused with Donald, the eldest son of William Stewart of Ben Nevis, as that Donald can be identified separately in various census records.  Donald is found in 1881, born ca. 1837 in Scotland, working as a farm servant in Puslinch for the family of James McLaren and Margaret Stewart (b. 1840 in Scotland).  In 1891 he is recorded as Donald Steward (with a 'd'), b 1831 in Scotland, residing in Puslinch, working as a labourer with the family of Peter & Christin McLean b 1841 in Scotland.  In the 1901 census Donald is shown as being born in 1834 in Scotland with no date of immigration given.  He is working as a servant in the household of Peter and Catherine McLean.  In 1911, Donald, age 75, is shown as born DEC 1835 in Scotland, working as a domestic servant for Donald Campbell in Puslinch, and has having immigrated in 1854.  Donald died 5 NOV 1919 in Fergus, Nichol, Wellington, age 84, no family info given on his death certificate.

Robert Stewart in Puslinch

Robert Stewart, shown in the 1901 census as being born on 10 MAY 1830 in Scotland and having immigrated in 1852(?), and working as a servant to Donald and Christina McLean.  He is strongly believed to be the son of Duncan Stewart and Margaret Gillespie of the Arden family.

Mary Ann(?) Stewart of Puslinch

Mary Ann (or Mrs. Janet? or Mrs James -- hard to read) Stewart born 16 OCT 1837 in Scotland, immigrated 1851, living alone in 1901 as a widow next door to the Kennedys and Clarks, near the Mountsberg family.  Stewart would therefore be her married name.

Legend

Has Children = This person has known descendants.

ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:

  1. Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.

  2. Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month.  Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.

  3. Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
