The Mountsberg Stewarts are so-called because they settled in the Mountsberg
area of Flamborough Township in Wentworth County. You might rightly ask why then
they would be listed in a website of Stewarts from Puslinch Township in Wellington
County. The simple reason is that in the 19th century Mountsberg was part of
Puslinch Township. Later 20th century county realignments changed its
jurisdiction to Flamborough. Furthermore the early Stewarts were all Scots
Presbyterians, and those in southern Puslinch all attended Duff's Presbyterian
Church (and later also Crieff). The Mountsberg Stewarts were also members of
Duff's Presbyterian Church and many members of this family were buried in Crown
Cemetery in Puslinch.
All that can be said of the origins of this family, so far, is that they came
from somewhere in Perthshire, Scotland. Judicious use of IGI data suggests
that they may have come from Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland,
however this is not confirmed. If the Mountsberg Stewarts did come from Fortingall, then it must be noted that
the Crieff Stewarts also came from Fortingall. If both families share a common
last name, a common parish of origin, a common time of emigration, and a common
destination for immigration, the prospect of these families possibly sharing a
common ancestor must be raised. This is discussed more fully below under
Research Leads.
Upon their arrival, the Mountsberg Stewarts lived with
another family in Badenoch, Puslinch for their first few years in
Canada, before settling on their Mountsberg property. We don't know who that
family was. Were they living with
relatives? Or perhaps their future in-laws, the Kennedy family, or another
Scottish immigrant family?
This family was later related by marriage to this author's family, the
Comrie Stewarts,
through the marriage of Margaret Stewart, a daughter of Peter Stewart of the
Comrie family, and her husband Harvey Alexander Stewart, a grandson of Alexander
Stewart of the Mountsberg family.
An early family biographer wrote the following about the Mountsberg Stewarts:
John Stewart, a widower from Perthshire, Scotland came to Upper Canada
during the 1830s. He was accompanied by his grown children four boys and two
girls and it appears that they may have spent a brief period in the small
Scottish community of Badenoch in Puslinch Township before moving south to
Mountsberg.
John Stewart and his sons settled on Lot 11, southeast, concession
13. Alexander Stewart, born in 1806, was probably John's eldest son* and helped
his father choose the site of their first home [now located at 77 Campbellville
Road, East Flamborough Township]. He married Catherine Kennedy of Badenoch,
Puslinch Township in 1844 and inherited the property when his father died in
1856.
Alexander's sister, Ann (1802-1885) married an ancestor of the Organs of
Concession 6, East Flamborough. Alexander had a niece, Agnes (1830-1915) who
married Peter Davidson of Freelton.
In order to obtain legal title to land, settlers were required to build a
home within the first year. Many settlers built rough shacks which were later
replaced by more permanent stone homes. The initial home that the Stewarts built
was such a
solid log cabin that it still stands today, and after recent restorations the
name of "Alex Stewart" is still visibly engraved over the original front door.
Alexander and his wife had a large family, but only six children reached
adulthood. The birth of triplet daughters on 9 November 1855 was announced in
several area papers. Sadly one child died at birth and another, named Agnes,
died in April 1860, the victim of a virulent scarlet fever epidemic that broke
out in Mountsberg during the spring of 1860. The epidemic also caused the death
of a younger sister, Jane, a month earlier, as well as several other children in
the community.
Around 1885, the family farm was divided between two of Alexander's sons,
Robert and William. Two older sons had already left the family farm. John moved
to Beverly and Charles to West Flamborough, while the youngest son, Lachlan,
became an architect in New York State.
In 1906, Robert sold his land to William and left the property. With a young
family that numbered six children, William moved into the frame house, but the
log cabin was still retained to be used by the next generation of Stewarts as
their first home. When the farm was sold in June 1966, five generations of the
Stewart family had spent part of their life in this Mountsberg log cabin.
[The original text above comes from an early out-of-print
history of Mountsberg, later excerpted without credit in, And They Came To East
Flamborough, by Patricia and Maurice Green and Sylvia and Robert Wray,
1997, Waterdown, East Flamborough Heritage Society.]
*The original unknown biographer suggests that Alexander was probably John's
eldest son. However such a claim is without basis in fact and presumes too
much. The claim is probably based solely on the fact that John later
resided with Alexander and that Alexander inherited the family farm.
However, we see from Alexander's own family that the farm did not necessarily
pass to the eldest son. In the 19th century land was much more easily
available than today. As such, elder sons often acquired their own farms
long before their fathers died so it was not uncommon for family farms to pass
to younger children. Indeed, this is exactly what happened with
Alexander's children. So it's quite possible, if not likely, that John had
older sons who established themselves elsewhere while Alexander, possibly a
younger son, remained on the family farm with his elderly father. Present
research shows that it is in fact more likely that Alexander was not the eldest
son.
John S. STEWART b: 1773 in Perthshire, Scotland. John's exact
birth has not been identified. His date of birth is calculated from his
age as given on his gravestone. However it is common for such references
to be slightly inaccurate. All that can be confirmed is that he was born
in Perthshire and died in 1856 at the age of 83. John S. Stewart married
in Perthshire, but his spouse is not certain. Onomastics would suggest
that her name was probably Agnes (or its Scottish equivalent, Ann) or possibly
Margaret. No births have been found for any of his children in Scotland.
John came to Canada in the early 1830s and settled on a farm in Mountsberg, East
Flamborough Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. John S.
Stewart had the following children:
-
Ann STEWART b: 1802 in Perthshire, Scotland. She married Donald
Stewart
- Their descendants are presented below.
-
Alexander STEWART b: AUG 1806 in Perthshire or Inverness, Scotland.
(Sources conflict over Alexander's exact place of birth.) He married
Catherine Kennedy.
- Their descendants are presented below.
-
Daughter STEWART b: BET 1795-1815 in Perthshire, Scotland
-
Son STEWART b: BET 1795-1815 in Perthshire, Scotland
-

The Descendants of John S. Stewart
Ann Stewart and Donald Stewart in East Flamborough
Ann STEWART b: 1802 in Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a daughter of
John S. Stewart. According to They Came to East Flamborough, "Alexander's
sister, Ann (1802-1885) married an ancestor of the Organs of Concession 6, East
Flamborough. Alexander had a niece, Agnes (1830-1915) who married Peter Davidson
of Freelton." Ann's death is witnessed by Thomas Organ, farmer, East Flamboro.
Ann's religion is given as Roman Catholic. Her birth is given as 1802,
Perthshire, Scotland. The Thomas Organ who witnessed Ann's death is the same
person as "the Organ's of Concession 6". Thomas Organ's wife was Margaret
Stewart whose parents are given only as "Stewart and Stewart". Peter Davidson's
wife can be identified as Agnes Stewart. From these two accounts we can conclude
that Ann Stewart's husband was also a Stewart. Unfortunately 1851 census records
for East Flamborough are non-existent; only the farm census survives listing
only heads of household without ages. Included in the farm census is a listing
for a Donald Stuart in East Flamborough. The 1881 census shows only one
Roman Catholic couple living in Flamborough who are the right age, named Donald
and Ann Stuart. Also the Organ's eldest two children were Donald Stewart Organ
and Annie Organ. This would seem support the suggestion that Ann Stewart married
Donald Stewart and had children as shown here.
Ann's death in 1885 records her as a widow. As Donald and Ann are found
living in East Flamborough in 1881 then Donald must have died between 1881-1885.
No corresponding death record has been found.
Donald and Ann must have married in Scotland prior to emigration. Their
daughter, Agnes, was born in Scotland in 1830 and Ann's family arrived sometime
in the early 1830s (ca 1834). However the only family for a Donald and Ann
Stewart found in the IGI is: Donald Stewart, married 11 DEC 1831 in Blair Athol,
Perth, Scotland to Ann Stewart, with the following children:
- William STEWART, b 1/12 MAY 1834 in Blair Atholl (could be the second
William in the E Flam 1852)
- Isabell STEWART, b 12/20 MAY 1837 in Blair Atholl
- Robert STEWART, b 12/20 MAR 1840 in Blair Atholl
There is no daughter named Agnes and the children above do not fit
onomastically with Ann's family. (i.e. There is no son named John.) And this
couple are shown having children in Scotland after Donald and Ann are believed
to have emigrated. Thus it would appear that this is not the family of Donald
and Ann who came to East Flamborough and that the correct Donald and Ann are not
found at all in the IGI (probably because they were Roman Catholic.)
Ann Stewart is presumed to have married ABT 1830 in Perthshire, Scotland to
Donald STEWART b: 1810 in Scotland, although no record of their marriage
has been confirmed. They had the following known children and likely
others which have not been discovered:
-
Agnes STEWART b: 30 APR 1830 in Perthshire, Scotland. Census and
death records indicate that Agnes was born 30 APR 1830 in Perthshire,
Scotland. No corresponding birth record has been found -- likely because she
was Roman Catholic. Agnes is known to have married to Peter DAVIDSON b:
1829 in Scotland, although no record of their marriage has been found.
They resided in West Flamborough and had the following children:
-
James S DAVIDSON b: 13 JUN 1856 in West Flamborough, Wentworth County,
Ontario, Canada
-
Isabella DAVIDSON b: 20 OCT 1857 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County,

-
Margaret STEWART b: 18 SEP 1846 in East Flamborough, Wentworth County,

although no record of their marriage has been found. Thomas ORGAN was b:
09 JUL 1844 in West Flamborough, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada, as the son
of John and Margaret Organ from Ireland. Margaret and Thomas had the
following children:
-
Donald Stewart ORGAN b: 1865 in Flamborough East, Wentworth North, Ontario,

Alexander STEWART b: AUG 1806 in Perthshire or Inverness, Scotland, shown above
as a son of John S. Stewart. (Sources conflict over Alexander's exact place of
birth.) Alexander's birth record has not been identified. Alexander
was born in Scotland. His gravestone says he was from Perthshire, but the
death record of one of his children lists Alexander's place of birth as
Inverness. Badenoch, Perthshire, Scotland boarders with Inverness.
Many other Puslinch residents came from Badenoch and they named their settlement
in Puslinch Badenoch after their home in Scotland. Alexander and his
father and family stayed with an unknown family in Badenoch in Puslinch when
they first arrived in Canada. It's quite possible that they were part of
the group who emigrated from Badenoch in Scotland. If Alexander was born
in Badenoch, Perthshire, Scotland which is near Inverness, this could
explain the confusion over his birth.
Alexander's gravestone reads: "Alexander Stewart died 23rd December 1889,
Aged 83 years and 4 months, A native of Perthshire, Scotland."
Alexander and his father settled on a farm on Lot 11 Southeast, Concession
13, Mountsberg, East Flamborough Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada in
the mid-1830s. Their original pioneer log cabin still stands today and
still bears the name of "Alexander Stewart" carved above the front door.
Alexander Stewart married on 23 OCT 1845 in Duff's Presbyterian Church,
Morriston, Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada to Catherine
KENNEDY b: ABT 25 AUG 1816 in Badenoch, Inverness Shire, Scotland, daughter
of William Kennedy and Elspeth McLean. Alexander and Catherine had the following children:
-
John STEWART b: 24 MAY 1846 in Mountsberg, East Flamborough Township,
Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. John and his family moved to
concession 10, Beverly Township, Wentworth County. John is presumed to
have married to Penelope HANNING (or HENNING) b: 17 APR 1853 in Canada,
daughter of James Henning and Margaret McLean, although no record of their
marriage has been found. John and Penelope had the following children:
-
Margaret Ann STEWART b: 17 OCT 1871 in Beverly Township, East Flamborough,

Mary E. FINCH b: 1943 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario,
Canada. She died in childhood.
-
Agnes STEWART b: 09 NOV 1855 in Mountsberg, East Flamborough Township,
Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. Agnes was one of the triplets. She
died as a child.
-
Margaret STEWART b: 09 NOV 1855 in Mountsberg, East Flamborough
Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. Margaret was the only one
of the triplets to survive to adulthood. Margaret married on 20 FEB 1883
in Wellington County, Ontario, Canada to John PHILPOT b: 13 MAR 1833 in
London, England. They had the following children:
-
Catherine PHILPOTT b: 02 OCT 1884 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County,
Ontario, Canada
-
Lachlan Alexander PHILPOT b: 09 DEC 1885 in Puslinch, Wellington County,
Ontario, Canada
-
Robert Harvey PHILPOT b: 12 APR 1888 in West Flamborough, Wentworth County,
Ontario, Canada
-
Agnes Hils Ilo PHILPOT b: 07 JUL 1896 in West Flamborough, Wentworth County,
Ontario, Canada
-
Jane STEWART b: 09 NOV 1855 in Mountsberg, East Flamborough Township,
Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. Jane was one of the triplets. She
died as a child. The published biography of this family says that one of the
triplets died at birth, and the second died a few years later of scarlet
fever. However the gravestones indicate that both girls died during the time
of the scarlet fever outbreak. It seems that either the gravestone
transcription or the published family history is wrong about the time of death
of one of the triplets. It is also possible that Jane's birthdate has been
confused with the triplets, and that the third triplet's name is unknown;
making Jane the fourth daughter. What is known for sure is that two of the
three triplets died as children.
-
Robert STEWART b: 20 MAR 1858 in Mountsberg, East Flamborough Township,
Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. Robert initially inherited half of
the family's Mountsberg farm, but he later sold his half to his brother
William. Robert and his wife Janet moved to the end of concession 13 at Brock
Road (now Highway 6) where they operated the toll gate. Robert married
to Janet Hellen ROSS b: 14 JUN 1857. It is believed that they had no
children.
-
Lachlan Kennedy STEWART b: 05 FEB 1862 in Mountsberg, East Flamborough
Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. Lachlan became an architect
although later American census records give his occupation as "contractor and
builder" and "interior finisher". In 1882 or 1888 (census records
conflict) Lachlan moved to Buffalo, New York, USA. Lachlan married in
1897 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, USA to Lillian KIDDER b: SEP 1872 in
New York, USA, daughter of William H. and Mary A. Kidder. They had no
children.
David STEWART, b 1781 in Upper Canada, res 1861 in East Flamborough,
Wentworth, Methodist; wife Elisabeth b 1891 in USA. The following are
suggested as his sons as they were living nearby in 1861 and show matching

carpenter; wife Sarah, b 1828 in Ontario

The following family represents the current best lead for the possible family
of John S. Stewart who immigrated to Mountsberg with his grown children:
Previously it had been believed, from onomastics, that the wife of John S
Stewart was named Margaret. From that, the following family was
tentatively identified.
John Stewart and Margaret Robertson in Fortingall, m 14/18 NOV 1800 in Blair
Atholl and Fortingall
- Katharine STEWART, bap 5 JAN 1795 in Weem
- Grisal STEWART, bap 9 MAR 1878 in Weem
- John STEWART, bap 14 SEP 1800 in Dull
- Niel STEWART, bap 26 OCT 1801 in Fortingall
- Susan STEWART, bap 22 DEC 1802 in Dull
- John STEWART, bap 20 JAN 1804 in Fortingall
- Alexander STEWART, bap 31 JUL 1807 in Fortingall
However, it now appears more likely that John's wife's name was Agnes.
The challenge is that John's son, Alexander's first daughters were triplets,
thus identifying which one was actually second born and thus named after her
paternal grandmother, is a challenge. However Archibald and Julia appear
to have named their first daughter Agnes.
The following family represents the current best lead for the possible birth
family of John S. Stewart:
John STEWART and Ann STEWART m 25 DEC 1763 in Fortingall
- Archibald STEWART, bap 20 MAR 1765 in Fortingall (mother given only as
"Ann" with no surname)
- Duncan STEWART, bap 18 OCT 1767 in Fortingall
- Margaret STEWART, bap 10 DEC 1769 in Fortingall
- John STEWART, bap 1 AUG 1773 in Fortingall
- several in Blair Atholl and Dull but clearly more than one family
If this is correct then Ann Stewart, wife of John, is a perfect chronological
and onomastic match to be a sister of Allan Stewart of the Crieff Stewarts, who
also came from Fortingall, was close in age to Ann and had an eldest son and
daughter named Duncan and Margaret.
The following Stewart families are found in East and West Flamborough and
represent possible contenders to be the children of John S. Stewart of
Mountsberg.
1851/52 East Flamborough Agricultural Schedule
The 1851 Canadian census for East Flamborough does not survive. However
the 1851 Agricultural census portion survives. Although it is identified
as 1851 it was actually conducted in 1852. The Agricultural Census lists
only the name of the head of household and the inventory of the farm production.
No ages or places of birth are given for the heads of household and no
additional family members are listed. The Agricultural Census for East
Flamborough lists the following Stewarts/Stuarts (the different spelling is
inconsequential):
- John Stuart - This would be John S. Stewart in Mountsberg.
- Alexander Stuart - Son of John S. Stewart in Mountsberg
- Donald Stuart - Son-in-law of John S. Stewart in Mountsberg,
married to Ann Stewart, daughter of John S. Stewart.
- Charles Stewart - He is identified below as a probable son of John
S. Stewart in Mountsberg.
- Arch'd Stewart - He is identified below as a probable son of John
S. Stewart in Mountsberg.
- Wm Stuart - See next William Stuart.
- Wm Stuart (second) - It is likely that one of the two William
Stewarts is a son of John S. Stewart in Mountsberg. The other William
Stewart is suspected to be a son of Donald Stewart, son-in-law of John S.
Stewart.
- Jas Stuart - He is suspected to be James Stewart in Waterdown who
immigrated from Dundee, Scotland and is believed to be no relation to the
Mountsberg Stewarts.
The likely candidates above are described in more detail below. In
addition to these likely candidates in East Flamborough in 1852 there is also a
contemporary Peter Stewart in West Flamborough who appears to be a strong
candidate to be a son of John S. Stewart. Peter is also described further
below.
