Relationship Chart

 

 

To determine a kinship between yourself and someone else, first determine your own relationship to a common ancestor by using the first row (horizontal).

Next find the other person's relationship to that same common ancestor by using the first column (vertical).

Read down and across until you find the box where the two intersect — this will be the kinship between the two of you.

1R = Once Removed
 (one generation removed from the original cousinship)*
 2R = Twice Removed
 3R = Thrice Removed
 4R = Four Times Removed 

*Example: Your First Cousin's child is your First Cousin Once Removed (being one generation removed from the original cousinship).
