David Starkins

Born August 12, 1820

Died June 6, 1887

Buried Zion Episcopal Churchyard, Douglaston, Long Island, NY

Within 3 months of starting out in genealogy I was able, through census records to identify my Gggrandfather David Starkins and find his burial place. Talk about beginner's luck! In the three years since then I have been able to find out only his parent's names (Joseph and Fanny Starkins). It took me nearly 2 years to find his death record after I had his death date and location. Such is the state of records for Queens County between 1750 and 1850. I have unconnected Starkins, on Long Island, dating back to 1740 when the will of Charles Mott mentions his grandson Joseph Starkins whose unnamed father was most likely dead since his mother Mary Ann Mott had remarried. I also have 2 Joseph Starkins who owned the Van Nostrand-Starkins house in what is now Roslyn. I have various marriage and death records for Starkins over the years but no connections either to the early Joseph Starkins of Hempstead Harbor or to the Family descended from Benjamin Starkins of Oyster Bay who was a mariner in the Revolution and was captured by the British.

It is most likely that the family originated from Hertsfordshire, England since the great majority of the Starkins appearing in English records are from there as well as a large number of the 17th century settlers of the area that is now Nassau county. Of course I have been unable to find a single Starkins on any ship's list or book of immigrants.
