Lena Wilhelmina Carolina Gahre

April 12, 1871 - April 22, 1914

 

Wilhelm and Marie (Pestrup) Gahre arrived in New York Harbor on March 5, 1863 aboard the Norddeutscher Lloyd steamer "New York" from Bremen. They originated in the Town of Geestendorf, near Bremerhaven. Geestendorf is now known as Geestemund. They had five children who survived to adulthood including Lena, my great grandmother. She married Louis Christian Spahn, a young widower, 11 years her senior. Louis was a music teacher and the son of German immigrants from Bavaria who had settled in Maspeth, Queens County, New York. In 1907 the couple purchased a home on Stanhope Street in Brooklyn that was to be the family home for many years.
