(39) STANBROUGH PERIGRINE STANCLIFF married SIBBEL DAVIS
JACOB DAVIS JR (Jacob4, Jabez3, John2, Dolar1)
Son of Jacob Davis Sr, but it is not certain which of Jacob's wives was his mother, and no record of his exact birth date. His father, Jacob Davis Sr, married 1. Harwich, Barnstable County, MA 1730 KEZIAH CROSBY who died there Dec. 31, 1732(1) married 2. Eastham, Barnstable County, MA June 14, 1733 MARY ROGERS daughter of James and Sussanah [Tracy] Rogers born Eastham, MA Nov. 12, 1698, married 3. before 1747 ANN ____ and we know of her existence only through a gravestone cut by James Stanclift Jr for a child buried in Simsbury which reads "Silas Davis, born 1747 died 1754, son of Jacob and Ann". So this indicates that the Davis family was in Simsbury by 1754. No records of Jacob Senior in the Simsbury Vital Records(2), but on May 7, 1763, Jacob Davis and Jacob Davis Jr both signed their names as inhabitants of Simsbury to a petition by the inhabitants of Farmington, Windsor and Simsbury, CT to control the fishing at the mouth of the Windsor Ferry River (now called the Farmington River) James Stanclift also signed the petition(3).
Jacob Jr was born before 1742, since he was a freeman and inhabitant of Simsbury in 1763 and therefore at least age 21 at that time. He married Simsbury, CT Mar. 27, 1760, ELIZABETH LEWIS "of New Hartford", Litchfield County, CT(4) this date, daughter of Thomas and Mary [Rowley] Lewis baptized Westchester Parish, Colchester, New London County, CT in 1743(5). While Elizabeth was married in Simsbury, just as sister Mary Lewis had been, she was listed as "of New Hartford" this date. Her sister Mary [Lewis] Stanclift was living in the Wintonbury area of Simsbury and James Stanclift was cutting stones in New Hartford, Litchfield County, CT. Another sister, Esther [Lewis] Wright, wife of Earl Wright was also living New Hartford at this time. Elizabeth was probably living with one of those families at the time of her marriage.
The family belonged to St. Andrews church in Simsbury. St. Andrews was part of the Church of England and the Pastor, Roger Viets, was imprisoned as a Tory during the Revolutionary War. Jacob Davis Jr evidently did not adhere to the political views of his pastor for Jacob Davis Jr of Simsbury had his tax abated for Military Service in 1778(6). A Jacob Davis served in troops of the Connecticut Line. The National Archives confirms this fact but the records contain no real information on this man.
According to "Simsbury Soldiers in the War of the Revolution" by the Abigail Phelps Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, page 141, Jacob Davis Jr, was in 1775 at the "Lexington Alarm" under the command of of Elisha Phelps and Job Case. He was listed as being from New Hartford but married in Simsbury to Elizabeth Lewis. Dates of marriage and Birthdates of all 10 children are also listed.
