THOMAS NICHOLS

Thomas was born 11 April 1809 in Tennessee (Marion County?)
It is thought Thomas was a brother to "Old John" Nichols.
Thomas Nichols was supposedly shot by Smiths while at an "infare"
wedding celebration
Harmon Marion NICHOLS(son of Sarah Emeline Nichols) married
SARAH HEFLEY on 24 August 1882 in Newton County, Arkansas.
It was at this "Infare"wedding celebration that Thomas NICHOLS was
shot and he died on 1 September 1882 in Newton County, in what was
to become the start of the SMITH-NICHOLS Feud.
(See the SMITH-NICHOLS FEUD STORY on my website)

My Flood family is related to both the Nichols and Smiths involved in
this feud.

THOMAS NICHOLS married (1)unknown woman.
On the 1840 DeKalb Co.Alabama census he is listed with:
110001-11001 (2 sons and 2 daughters)
I will number the children and make reference to them later.

On the 1850 Newton County,Arkansas census Thomas and Elizabeth Davis
Nichols appear with the following children:
(1)JAMES NICHOLS, age 18 (born 1832)in Tennessee
See NEW INFORMATION below

(2)MARTHA G. NICHOLS ,age 18,born Missouri (was she a niece?)
See more about Martha in this story

(3)MARGARET H NICHOLS,age 14,born Alabama

(4)WILLIAM M NICHOLS,age 12,born Alabama
Twin to Allen Nichols. See more about William M Nichols in this story
Have his Civil War Pension record

(5)ALLEN H NICHOLS,age 12,born Alabama
Twin to William M Nichols. See more about Allen in this story

THOMAS NICHOLS married:
(2)ELIZABETH DAVIS ca 1846
. Since Elizabeth was born in Missouri; it is doubtful she married
Thomas in Tennessee
The DAVIS family of Newton County is closely tied in with the NICHOLS
families.Believe Richard Davis and Ambrose Davis, were related.
(See further information)
(Have copy of their youngest son Larkin Nichols death certificate in
which it is stated that Elizabeth Davis was his mother)

ELIZABETH DAVIS was born 13 Nov 1818 in Missouri and
married THOMAS NICHOLS ca 1846
Elizabeth died 8 Aug 1893 in Newton County, Arkansas.
Do not know where she is buried, but probably Sexton Cemetery.
Because she married at about age 28, she possibly could have other
children.
(see references to the Davis children in this story).
Thomas Nichols died 1 Sept 1882 in Newton County,Arkansas
He is buried in Sexton Cemetery in Newton County.

On the 1860 Newton County, Arkansas census, White Township,Visit 406
NICHOLS,Thomas, age 57, male, born Tenn. Farmer
Elizabeth, age 45, female, born MO
William ,age 21, male, born Ala (No 4)
Narcissa J, age 17, female, born Ala (No 6)
Richard, age 14,male,born Ark , (No 7)
John, age 11, male, born Ark, (No 9) (John Samuel)
Mary, age 9, female, born Ark, (No 8)
David, age 6, male, born Ark, (No 10)(David Louis)
Thomas F, age 2, male, born Ark, (No 11)
DAVIS,Ambors(Ambrose),age 23,male,born MO, (born 1837)
(Ambrose was living with JOHN CECIL family in 1850 Newton County)
I have Ambrose Davis' Civil War Pension record.
Ambrose Davis was born Newton County,MISSOURI per Civil War record).

This is the same county in Missouri that Richard DAVIS was born.
Richard Davis was also in the Civil War. He and his family lived in
Newton County, ARKANSAS.
Some people think Richard Davis was son of Samuel Davis, but I do not
believe this theory.
(Read about Richard Davis in another 'Kinfolks Story on my website)
I tend to follow census, marriage, cemetery and Civil War records for
my information and do not like to go by "handed-down" stories.
Have many, many family group sheets on the families I research.

Who is the (No.6)NARCISSA J ,age 17,listed above?
Was she wife of William M Nichols? or was she a daughter of Thomas
Nichols??

I believe that Mary should be age 11 and John should be age 9,as
John was born in 1851.

Where is Allen H Nichols(No. 5) now?

(No.2) MARTHA G NICHOLS(possibly a niece), married:
(1)FREDRICK JOHN COOK ca 1857 in Newton County,Arkansas.
Believe Fredrick John Cook was in the Confederate Army.
Have not been able to trace his war record as yet.

In Ambrose Davis' Civil War Pension record it states that Fredrick
John Cook died at Mt.Judea in 1863, but do not know if he was in the
Confederate Army or not.
There was an F. J. Cook who served in the Confederate Army during
the Civil War.

Martha and Fredrick John COOK were the parents of:
i:Frances Julia Cook,
Frances Julia Cook later had three sons; two sons returned to live
in Newton County later.
They went by the surname of Cook.

ii:Margaret Cook
Margaret later married JAMES POLK REDDELL

iii:Mary Cook.

After Fredrick John Cook's death, Martha Nichols Cook married
(2)AMBROSE DAVIS in 1866. They had several Davis children.
(See 'Ambrose Davis Story' later in my 'Kinfolks Stories' on my website)
Ambrose Davis stated in his Civil War Pension Record that JOHN CECIL
raised him. John Cecil's wife was MARY DAVIS.
Was Mary Davis Cecil a sister of Ambrose Davis or his mother?

There were several DAVIS girls who are related somehow to Elizabeth
Davis Nichols:
Sarah A Davis(b 1836 in MO.)who married WILLIAM M NICHOLS (son of
Thomas Nichols)
Drusilla Davis born 1830 in Missouri
Cela D Davis born 1832 in Missouri who married SEABORN WRIGHT.
The Wright's sons were involved in the Smith-Nichols feud.
These three Davis girls were living in the John Cecil household in
1850,Jackson Twp.,Newton County,Arkansas
Were they sisters of Ambrose Davis??
Was Mary Davis CECIL (wife of John Cecil) related to this family?
Believe she was related, especially if John Cecil raised Ambrose Davis

(No. 4)WILLIAM M. NICHOLS married SARAH A DAVIS(above) ca 1859 in
Newton County, Arkansas
William M NICHOLS died 19 Dec 1927 in Sulphur,Oklahoma

William is pictured with his half-brother John Samuel Nichols
and wife Julia Holt Nichols. (See picture below)

I have Williams' Civil War Pension file.
He was born 28 July 1839 in DeKalb County,Alabama
(Wills Valley--located near the border of Tennessee and Alabama)
William stated Wills Valley was near this area.
Some of the Nichols are listed as living in DeKalb County, Alabama,
while others are listed as living in Marion County, Tennessee

Go to TOPOZONE and you can see exactly where it is located.

That is a good pinpoint place where Thomas Nichols lived in 1839.

(No.5)ALLEN H. NICHOLS served in the Confederate Army,Co.G,Cocke's
Regiment Arkansas Infantry.Enlisted 3 Sept 1862 in Madison County,
Arkansas(or was conscripted).
Am unable to locate him anywhere. He deserted. But he returned to
Newton County, Arkansas and married M.A. CASEY, (23) on 13 June 1872.

(No. 6)Narcissa J,age17,female,born in Alabama.
Was she wife of William M Nichols? Was she a daughter of Thomas Nichols
Who was she? Have never found her in any further records.

Many times the Nichols families married into the Nichols of Franklin
County, Arkansas

Arkansas and died there about 1871.
Richard Davis was born in Newton County,MISSOURI (per Missouri census
records).
His first wife LOUISIANA KAVANAUGH was born in Missouri.
Believe his first two children were also born in Missouri

NEW INFORMATION
(see No. 1 child **James Nichols above)
In the Newton County Historical Society Bulletin,1999,page 22
was a query concerning Nichols\Brewer families.
The Floods are related to both the Nichols and Brewer families.
Henry Brewer born 1809 in North Carolina married NANCY (maiden name
unknown).
Their known children:
i:Jesse BREWER born 1831 in N.C.
Jesse married MARY ANN FLUD, daughter of John L FLUD and
Maranda GILMORE.
Jesse BREWER died on 12 Mar 1862 and Mary Ann FLUD BREWER married
(2)Peter TORIX.
Mary Ann Flud Brewer had a son John H Brewer born 1858
and a daughter Nancy C Brewer born 1862. Have never located these two
Brewer children.
Have Peter Torix's Civil War Pension record.
Mary Ann Flud Brewer Torix died ca 1894 in Newton County, Arkansas
and only two sons, William and Levi TORIX were mentioned as living.
(See the TORIX STORY in my kinfolks stories)

ii:Matilda BREWER born 1836 in Tennessee(might have married a
NELSON)because there were Nelsons who lived close to family in
Camp Wood,Texas and Ollie's mother said that they were cousins to
her mother.
iii:Mary Ann BREWER born 1837 in Arkansas.
It is thought Mary Ann BREWER married **JAMES NICHOLS (No.1)above
(son of Thomas Nichols and his first wife).
A daughter MARY JANE NICHOLS was born 14 Feb 1854.
The Thomas Nichols family lived near the Brewer family in 1850 on
the Newton County, Arkansas Census.
Did (No. 1) JAMES NICHOLS, marry Mary Ann Brewer and were they the
parents of Mary Jane Nichols, born 1854???
I wonder??

MARY JANE NICHOLS (daughter of Mary Ann Brewer Nichols)married a
BALDWIN.
A child of this marriage was Effie Baldwin Webb. Effie Baldwin Webb
was the mother of Ollie Edwards who put the query in the Newton
County Historical Society Bulletin, Fall 1999,page 22.
Per Ollie Edwards...........

By 1860 Mary Ann Brewer NICHOLS was remarried to *JAMES EDWARD MAXEY
and they lived in Johnson County,Texas.
Mary Jane NICHOLS married a BALDWIN.
Daughter Effie BALDWIN WEBB told her daughter Ollie Ray Webb Edwards
that Mary Jane NICHOLS' daddy died around the time she was born(1854)
either just before or afterwards.
Was her daddy James Nichols, son of Thomas Nichols and his first
wife? There is a great possibility.

*James Edward Maxey and his first wife MARGARET WELLS MAXEY were on
the 1850 Newton County,Arkansas Census with son
i:Alfred M Maxey ,born 13 Sept 1849 in AR."
Their other children were:
ii:Walter Lee Maxey
iii:Margaret C Maxey
iv:John Maxey.

James and Margaret Wells Maxey divorced.
James Edward Maxey then married MARY ANN BREWER NICHOLS.
Their children were:(continuing with James Maxey children).
v:James Henry Maxey
vi:Easter Arizona Maxey
vii:Adeline Canzadie Maxey,
viii:William Andrew Maxey and
ix:Jessie Thomas Maxey.
By 5 Nov 1875 Mary Ann Maxey was born to James Edward Maxey and his
THIRD wife,ELIZA JANE CURTIS MCGUIRE MAXEY, so Mary Ann Brewer
NICHOLS MAXEY must have died before 1875.
James Maxey and his third wife had 5 other children.

Ollie Ray Webb Edwards states in her query that in 1973, a
Mrs. Jimmie SEXTON HENRY,a descendant of Thomas NICHOLS, was working
on a Family Tree of the Nichols family. At that time Mrs. Henry lived
in Stuttgart,Arkansas.
She wanted to know if anyone had additional information to share.

continuing with the Brewer part of the story
Henry Brewer born 1809 in N C remarried to a CATHERINE (MNU)ca 1855
as they had:
i:Biddy A Brewer born 1855 who died in Dec 1859 of dropsy
(per Arkansas Mortality Schedule).
ii:Sarah C Brewer who died Dec 1859 at 7 months of age.
iii:Elizabeth J Brewer born 1856 who married GEORGE EDWARDS
in 1874 in Newton County, Arkansas.
iv:Margaret E Brewer (nothing further known).
In 1870 Elizabeth and Margaret Brewer were living with the Henderson
Fowler family in Newton County, Arkansas
Were the Brewer and Fowler families related?

Henry Brewer was County Judge 1856-1860 and County Coroner 1854-1856.
Son Jesse Brewer was postmaster of Mt.Judea,Arkansas
Henry Brewer's first wife NANCY (maiden name unknown)Brewer was
living with her son Jesse Brewer and his family in 1860.

CAN ANYONE TIE THE NICHOLS,BREWER FAMILIES TOGETHER???
