TIMOTHY SEXTON (1755-1832)

Father Timothy Sexton was born ca 1755 at unknown place.
Timothy Sexton enlisted at Morristown,New Jersey in Revolutionary War
in 1777 for three years in the Continental Line.
He spent the winter at Valley Forge with George Washington and his
Army.He served under Colonel Elias Deyton in 3rd New Jersey
Battalion,Fifth Company. His captain was Captin Henry H Dickerson.
Timothy Sexton was discharged on January 9, 1780 in Baltimore,
Maryland

Timothy Sexton married ESTHER SISEL(CECIL?) on August 28, 1782 in
York District, South Carolina by William Hill, J.P.
Esther Cecil's cousin JOHN GEE was a witness at their wedding on
Allison Creek,South Carolina.
The surname SISEL is also known as CECIL.
The CECIL families moved to Arkansas about 1838.
Esther may be related to the notorious JOHN CECIL,a Confederate
Captain and bushwhacker in the Civil War time in Northern Arkansas
in the same area where Timothy and Esther Sexton's son John Sexton
settled with his family.

Esther Cecil's cousin JOHN GEE was a witness at their wedding on
Allison Creek,South Carolina.
The GEE family also moved to Arkansas just about the time that son
John Sexton moved there, and the GEE families married into the
STANDRIDGE and BRASSFIELD families.

The 1790 Census in Camden District, York County, South Carolina
listed Timothy, wife and two children under 16.

By 1800 the Sextons had left South Carolina and moved to Georgia
(Wilkes and Elbert Counties).
All of their children were born in South Carolina.
The Sextons moved to Knox County,Tennessee about 1808, where
Timothy's name is mentioned in land being surveyed on the west side
of New River in Campbell County, Tennessee.
About 1819 they moved to Brimstone Creek in Morgan County, Tennessee
(now a part of Scott County.)
Timothy Sexton applied for pension and received $96.00 annual
allowance.
Total amount received by January 14, 1819 was $741.60. Pension was
dropped May 1, 1820 but restored on April 22, 1825.
Timothy Sexton died on 18 June 1832 in Morgan County (now Scott
County), Tennessee.
Esther Sexton applied for widow's benefits due to her husband's
Military service,War of 1812
Esther died 23 January 1850 in Morgan County, Tennessee

He married NANCY NICHOLS, ca 1860. She was the daughter of
"Old John"Nichols and unknown wife. Nancy was born 11 Oct 1836 per

Nancy Nichols Sexton

Not positive if she is Nancy Nichols Sexton?

(Sent for William Riley Sexton's Civil War Pension record in 1991...
It is not the complete record,)
He enlisted in Co. F, First Arkansas Infantry on March 10, 1863.
In April 1863 he was absent, supposed to be a prisoner.
On June 30, 1863 he was absent on scout since April 15, 1863 and cut
off by the enemy in Newton County.
This same thing happened to many members of Co. F, First Arkansas
Infantry (Union). The Infantry had gone into Newton County to enlist
more men in the the Union Army and there were so many Confederate
soldiers in that area, that the officers had to abandon their men
and flee back to Fayetteville, leaving many Union soldiers behind.
Many Union men were taken prisoner by Confederate forces on or about
May 1863.
( Read my story "Hanging in Limestone Valley May 1863" in my
'Kinfolks Stories' to get the details of this time period).
William Riley Sexton MAY have been one of those soldiers
captured by Confederates and who later made their escape.
Three Union soldiers were hung in this incident.

When William Riley Sexton applied for Civil War Pension,he was listed
as deserted. Because of my not having his complete Pension file,
do not know if he was finally able to obtain his pension.
He did apply in 1892 for his Civil War Pension,NO.1099851.
Several interesting facts in his file state that he was disabled for
labor and has been since the date of filing his claim and that his
disabilities are not the result of vicious habits.
He stated he had no regular family physician since the death of
Doctor JOHN MARPLE (paper dated 1June1893) who died some seven or
eight years ago.
NOTE:Dr. MARPLE is buried in the Charley Bolin Mt. Cemetery in Newton
County, Arkansas with no death date, so Dr. Marple died about 1886.
"Since that time I have bought my medication sometimes at the
drugstore, sometimes I would get medicines from first one physician
and then another from March 1892 on up until November 1892.
I generally bought my medicine at the drugstore. The reason I done
this, I am a very poor man and was not able to pay the doctor bills.
So I have not had any family physician in some seven or eight
years".
He has affidavits signed by Eli Dotson, George W Nichols,
Daniel Sexton, J W Sexton and W.B. Nichols
The doctors listed his disabilities as old age, general debility,
rheumatism,"falling of mumps" and hydrocele.
One paper shows his application was abandoned March 13, 1894, so
I do not know if he received a pension or not.

William Riley Sexton died 11 Oct 1903 with burial in Sexton Cemetery
in Newton County, Arkansas.

His wife NANCY NICHOLS, was born 11 Dec 1839 (tombstone states
11 Oct 1836)in Tennessee. She died 31 March 1911 (tombstone states
May 1911).
She was the daughter of "Old John" Nichols and unknown wife.
Nancy was sister to Tibitha Nichols Ricketts ;Sally Nichols Flud;
Martha Nichols;Malinda Nichols Shaddox; Margaret Nichols and
William B Nichols.
Half brother was David Nichols and half-sister was
Sarah Nichols Vaught Foster.

We can't have old days back,
When we were all together,
But secret tears and loving thoughts,
Will be with us forever.
He walks with us down quiet paths,
And speaks in wind and rain,
For the magic power of memory,
Gives him back to us again. ...)
