Pension was rejected as he deserted on 28 Feb 1864.
Claim No. 493, 259.Widow applied, Application No. 676,182
Perhaps Levi was taken prisoner by Confederates and was not able to
make roll call with his unit. This happened many times to many Union
soldiers.
I have Levi Smiths Civil War Pension record but not the Complete
File, which may show much more and he may have been able to prove he
did not desert and wife Sopha may have drawn a pension later on.
I am not sure. But the records I have say his claim was REJECTED DUE
TO DESERTION on 28 Feb 1864.

Roy Smith's niece brought him from Oklahoma to visit his cousin Garland and Nancy Smith. Roy is a brother to Newt Smith (Jasper Newton) who died in the Newton County Nursing Home some years back. Garland's brother Columbus took 86-year-old Roy to Smith Cemetery on top of Red Rock Point, where their grandparents Levi and Sophia Smith are buried. Roy's niece loved it here and said she has to have a plot of land to build a house on. Garland and Roy hadn't seen each other for so many years, 92-year-old Garland couldn't remember him.

Interesting information sent to me by JANETTE WILSON PATTERSON
Thanks so much for your help Janette.
James and Sarah traveled to Indian Territory by covered wagon.
They sold out in Arkansas and had several thousand dollars which
granny had sewn into a petty coat. She wore that petty coat next to
her with four more over it. They were attacked by outlaws once on
the way but granny never revealed the whereabouts of their money
Another thing about Annie....she always carried a pistol in the
waist band of her skirt, right under her apron. She was a crack shot
and meaner than spit. Grandpa Bill, who she lived with at the time
of her death, finally took her gun from her.He sold the gun because
as she got to frail to spank or fight, she would draw the pistol at
the drop of a hat.
Mattie and Will Greenhaw bought and operated the Macona Lodge in
McAlester, Oklahoma. It is now known as the Hiway Lodge.

Levi Smith tombstone, Smith Cemetery on Judy Point

While visiting in Newton County about 1992, Betty Kay Gilmore Smith took me to the Garland and Nancy Smith home. Took my recorder and recorded some interesting stories from the couple.
Will transcribe this conversation and send it to the Newton County Historical Society for inclusion in their quarterly.

They had many pictures of the Smith families. I tried to take some black and white photos from their huge picture collection, but am sad to say they did not turn out.One photo was of Sopha and several of her daughters playing instruments. One son was in the photo, who was probably Thomas "Doc" Smith.
Hope to return and try to take some more copies of their photos.

So this is the LEVI SMITH and SOPHA ANN FLOOD FAMILY as I know it
If you have any corrections or additions, please send me an E-mail
Will be adding pictures to the story from time to time, so please
come back and visit again.
