JOHN M and MARY POLLY RENE ROWLAND SMITH Families of Newton County,
Arkansas

This is their families' genealogy as I know it.
Many collateral families are listed
Corrections or additions welcomed.
Will be adding more information and (hopefully photos) to this genealogy, so please come back and visit later.
If you have any photos you wish to share on these families, please
send them to me.

John M. Smith was son of Jeremiah and Margaret L Armstrong-Byrd Smith
John was born 24 May 1826 in Lawrence County,Tennessee.
John married MARY POLLY RENE ROWLAND on 22 May 1844\45 in Newton County,Arkansas; married by Jesse Casey,JP
Have John M. Smith's Civil War Pension Record.
John served in Co. C, Second Arkansas Cavalry (Union) during Civil
War.Drew Pension No. 471,229 and 613,497.
His physical descriptions states he was 6 feet tall with blue eyes
and red hair.
Per his pension record, John died 12 May 1906 in Newton County.
Do not know which cemetery he is buried in.

John is eligible for a Union Civil War Tombstone.
If any of his direct descendants are reading this, you can still
apply for a government military tombstone at no cost.
The U.S. government will only place his name and regiment number on
the stone; any other information such as dates and places one would
have to pay for. Someone would have to pour the cement footing the
stone would be placed on and install the stone when the stone is
shipped.
Contact me and I will try to guide you through the steps to obtain a
military tombstone for John.

MARY POLLY RENE ROWLAND
was born July 1823 in Lawrence County, Tennessee.
Mary Polly's death date and place of burial is unknown
Father: Stephen Rowland
Mother: Sally McKew (McKeon?)(McHugh?)
Stephen Rowland and Sally McKew were married 12Oct1818 in Lawrence
County, Tennessee. (not verified)
Paternal Grandfather was George W Rowland and grandmother was
Martha Gibson

John and Mary Polly Rene Rowland Smith's known children were:
(1)MARGARET SMITH born 1846 in Newton County, Arkansas
No further information; married unknown
died unknown

(2)JAMES W SMITH born 3 Oct 1847 in Newton County, Arkansas.
Died 7 Jan 1898,Newton County, Arkansas, buried:Coppers Bluff Cemetery
in Newton County.
James married MARY TENNISON ,born Nov 1853. Married ca 1867, page 14,
Newton County, Arkansas Marriage Records
MARY TENNISON is probably the daughter of ALLEN TENNISON and
RACHEL EASTEP.
Studied Allen, John, Thomas and David Tennison families who were
living in Newton County,Arkansas on 1850 and 1860 census.
From the names and ages of their children, believe Mary Tennison to
be the daughter of Allen and Rachel Eastep Tennison. Allen Tennison
was born in Tennessee and believe Rachel Eastep to be born in
Missouri. It is said Rachel Eastep was of Indian blood.
Allen and Rachel Eastep Tennison were killed during the Civil War and
are buried under the Norton's barn. Brother John Tennison is also
buried there. Daughter Mary Tennison probably went to live with
another family and that is why we cannot find her on later census
records.

John Tennison had a daughter Mary A Tennison, born 4July1854 in
Arkansas, who married Simon Solomon Sutton in 1871 in Parker County,
Texas.

David Tennison had a daughter Mary, born 1848.
David's wife was Martha. They were in Newton County up to 1880.
Will be listing their genealogy in my 'Kinfolks Stories' soon.

Thomas and Sarah Caroline Liles Tennison had a daughter
Mary Martha Tennison , born 6 Nov 1851 in Arkansas who was on the
1860 census but was not on the 1870 census;
Mary Martha Tennison apparently died young.
I have Thomas Tennison's Civil War Pension Record and have a list of
their children and their exact birth dates.

Thomas J Tennison's bible page showing childrens birthdates

Allen T Tennison (son of Allen ) married Nancy Riggs and they had a
daughter Mary Tennison, born ca 1879 who married James Armstrong.

There was a Samuel Tennison who lived in Missouri but was in Newton
County during the Civil War and died there ca 1866 while in the Union
Army. His probate record is in Newton County, but he did not have a
daughter Mary that I am aware of.
I believe at this point that *MARY TENNISON was the daughter of
ALLEN TENNISON and RACHEL EASTEP.

1860 Newton County, Arkansas Census
Allen Tennison 36
Rachel, 35 (Rachel Eastep)
Lucinda, 12
*Mary, 8
Allen, 5
James 1

My second conclusion is that James W Smith and Mary Tennison named
their firstborn son, John Allen Smith after James' father John Smith
and Mary's father Allen Tennison; thus the name John Allen Smith.

Allen Tennison and Rachel Eastep Tennison died ca 1862 during Civil
War time and are buried under Norton's Barn in Newton County,
Arkansas, White Township. They were killed by bushwhackers.

James W and Mary Tennison Smith did not show up on the 1870 or 1880
census records that I could find.
Mary Tennison Smith was on the 1900 Newton County, Arkansas census
as a widow with 9 living children.I cannot account for the 9th child.
Do not know when and where Mary Tennison Smith died.

used and often times a nickname is used on census records. Also, there
may be other children for the listed couples, born between census
records and there may be other children born after the 1920 census.
