Rev George Benton Curtis
George's parents were:
John David Curtis (1854 - 1939)
Mahala Essex Curtis (1857 - 1939)
George Benton Curtis, the tenth of John David & Mahala (Essex)
Curtis's 13 children, was born in Limestone, Newton Co, AR, on
August 8, 1891.
George's son, Fayne, said that his grandmother, Mahala, was a little
better educated than the average. She told him that she had taught his
grandfather, John, how to read and write. She was very interested in
educating her children.
George liked school and attended religiously. He had a seeking mind and
was curious about everything. Mahala always tried to encourage him to
do the best he could, and he eventually became a school teacher.
When he was 21, he married Laura Hefley, age 17, on September 8, 1912,
in Newton Co, AR.
George taught in Newton County schools until 1919, when he moved his
family to Whitesboro, Grayson County, Texas. He took up farming and
tried to grow a cotton crop. His efforts were less than he had hoped
for when his crops were destroyed by boll weevils.
He gave up farming in 1922 and started teaching again. For several
years, during summer breaks, he returned to Limestone with his family
to teach summer school. Around 1930 he started preaching, and in
1934,moved the family to Haskell, OK where he became a full time
minister for the Church of Christ.
He continued in the ministry until his death in Malvern, Arkansas, on
January 7, 1958. The following article, printed in the Gospel Light
in his honor, provides a brief glimpse into his life:
"Cerebral Hemorrhage Takes Life of George B. Curtis
George B. Curtis, a long time preacher of the gospel, died in a
Malvern, Ark. hospital Tuesday,Jan.7, following a cerebral hemorrhage
which he suffered a few hours earlier. Brother Curtis preached for
churches in Haskell,Okla.,Bentonville, and Morrilton, Ark.,Henryetta,
Okla., Winslow, Ariz., Silver City, New Mexico, Clarksville, Ark.,
Poteau, Okla., Siloam Springs, and neighboring congregations.
He and Sister Curtis moved to Malvern in November 1956. He has
engaged in many debates; his writings are prolific, having served as
one of the staff writers of the Gospel Light for many years. Brother
Curtis became a member of the Lord's church in 1909.
He was married to Laura E. Hefley on September 8, 1912.
To this union
were born seven children, two having preceded him
in death: an infant boy in 1916 and a daughter, Faye, in 1948.
Five remain:Opal Beck, Rogers, Ark.; Let. Fayne E. Curtis, San Diego,
Calif.; George F., Oklahoma City, Okla.; 10 grand children, one,
Jerry Stiles who was reared as a son after his mother's death, and
one great-grandchild. Other survivors also include his wife, Laura,
one brother, Walter Curtis,Limestone, Ark.,three sisters,
Mrs. Lou Clayborn, Deer, Ark., Mrs. Grace Bohannon, Limestone, and
Mrs. Susie Davis, Hiwassee,
Ark.
Brother Curtis has baptized thousands during the many years he
preached the gospel. He was instrumental in establishing scores of
congregations and his work has been a blessing to many throughout the
nation. The Lord has lost a valiant soldier.
Funeral services were conducted January 10 at the church building in
Malvern by E. R. Harper of Abilene, Texas. He spoke comforting words
and had a message worthy of consideration by all present.
Grave side service and burial were in Clarksville, Ark., where
Brother and Sister Curtis made their home when not engaged in
evangelistic work.
Billy C. Hale of Camden, Ark., spoke at the grave side service ". . .
Life was good to Brother Curtis in many ways. At its best, however,
it is still "full of trouble and of few days." Although not rich by
any means in this world's goods, he was far richer than many
millionaires for he possessed the love and respect of a wonderful
Christian wife, the love and affection of his children, the love and
admiration of his grandchildren who were the utmost in his mind as
he labored to construct a small sleeping house by the side of his
home here in Clarksville.
Then there are those of us who labored with him in the cause of
Christ. He possessed our love and respect also. I loved him as my own
father and he bore my troubles and my worries as if I were his son.
While I labored with the Cravens and Cherry congregation in this
city, he was a constant source of strength and encouragement.
Last spring I held meeting for the Hagarville congregation near here.
Throughout the meeting we had heavy rains. As a result the attendance
was low. The brethren there had worked hard and were expecting a full
house every night. One day it rained exceptionally hard and continued
raining until about ten or fifteen minutes before time for services
to start. As it neared this time, it was evident that only a handful
would be there. But, then I looked up and saw Brother and Sister
Curtis pulling in the driveway. They had driven up from Malvern to
attend to some business matters and had decided to take the time to
come out and hear me preach. They had to be in Malvern the next
morning so it was a sacrifice for them to do this.
They didn't tell me why they went to all this trouble, but I know.
They came to hear me simply because they wanted to encourage me in my
work. I cannot express to you how much encouragement this was.
But there is no need for me to tell you what kind of man
George B. Curtis was. The fruit of his life is evident. He is gone
now. His name may never be written in our history books, but his
memory is indelibly stamped upon the hearts of those who knew and
loved him. He was a Christian. Therefore, his life was a success.
It is as simple as that. Whatever charge you may bring against him,
in the final analysis you must admit that this is true for
'what doth it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his
own soul.'
He was a man of ability;I am sure if he desired this world's goods,
he could have been a man of considerable means. Instead he sought to
proclaim the gospel of Christ at a time when it was truly a sacrifice
to be a gospel preacher. He did not live to die but rather he died in
this world that he might live in the world which is to come."
Laura died in Rogers, Benton Co, AR, on October 28, 1976. She was
buried beside George in Clarksville.

Lillie was daughter of Richard Nichols (1845-1927) and
Tobitha Deliatha Nichols (1846-1899)
Frank Hefley died after Dec. of 1896 but before the 1900 census where
Lillie Bell is listed as widow.
His son, Otto, was born in September of 1897, so he must have been
born around 9 months back! I think he may have died near Whitefield,
Oklahoma because the census lists them as living there in Indian
Territory by township 76, 9 N, and 17 E. which is the Hoyt/Whitefield
area. His wife is buried there.
There are many graves at Hoyt Cemetery that have no names. They are
just 4x4 stone markers. One of those may be his. However, some family
members think he is buried at Webber Falls.
The clerk wrote his name as Jeff and Jeffley Hefley. He signed his
name with an X and so did his witness, Levi Smith.
