NOTE:It was very hard for me to tell Sarah Atkinson Bolin Smith and
Sarah Bolin Atkinson families apart. Hope I have not made any
errors

For many years it was not known who the father of Bettis Atkinson was.
He, along with his siblings, Etta, Ollie and Pernie, were born out of
wedlock to Melcena Atkinson.
Since the children were illegitimate, they took the last name of
their mother,Mel Atkinson.
Bettis's children never knew who their grandfather was but they knew
that he was a BRASEL.
In 1998, Kent Cusack talked to Maude Brasel, age 92, of Jasper,
Arkansas, granddaughter of Matt Brasel.
She told me that her grandfather,Matt Brasel, was the father of
Bettis Atkinson. She said that Bettis and his brother Ollie used to
ride to Jasper and spend the night with her family. Apparently it
was no secret at the time that Matt Brasel had sired two families and he provided well for Melcena and their four children.
Melcena moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma and lived with her daughter
Pernie before she died in 1919.
Melcena is buried in Silver Lake Cemetery in Bartlesville,Oklahoma
