Dear Hulda,

We got your very pretty card. Thanks. We should have answered it long ago, but have been busy and we have so many letters to write after Christmas is over. We hear from so many of our friends. Xmas is a very pleasant, tho busy, time for us. And we enjoy it so much for it is a great pleasure to hear from our old friends, and we would love to see them all also and we hope some day we may have the pleasure.

We are well as usual and have had a very pleasant winter, more bright days than cloudy days. We were very much pleased to hear from you and cannot you come to visit us? We would like very much to see you again and would make your visit as pleasant for you as we can.

Mrs. Jake Beatty was here not long ago to see Mr. Smith. But we did not see her. Boyd Smith is running a drug store here in town, the firm is Smith and Shearer. We always trade there if we need anything in their line.

We like Will Charlton's wife, she is as much like Lucy as he could get another wife to be... and you know that Lucy was fine. If you should come, I know you will like her. Their new home is very nice indeed.

Eva Salisbury Barnes is away in DAX in the southern part of France for her health. Edie Terrell lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mrs. Salisbury & Annie Barnes are with Edie. Barron is going to a boys school near there. And Edith is married and lives in New York.. is an opera singer on the stage. We hear from Eva often. Also the rest. Edie Terrell will go to Europe to meet Eva this spring. Will come home together in Summer. Mr. Whistler & the girls are in Council Bluffs. Maggie teaches private school at home. Minnie teaches at Omaha. Hattie lives out in Denver. Ollie is married, lives in Council Bluffs. So many of the old friends are living away off. Mrs. Salisbury & Edie & Mrs. Renfro (?) were here last fall. Ed & Lola Gilbert live next door to us. They built a fine new house. Well, guess you still remember the time years ago when we used to see each other quite often and have such nice times, but we have all passed thru many different scenes since then. The years have gone and (born?) their record to Eternity.

Tom's wife & son still live in Washington. Mort's wife, Alice, is very nice lady. They are keeping house now. Lizzie's mother died in Nov, leaves Lizzie alone. We hope this may find you and your family all well. Please write again. And we will try and not put you off so long.

We send our love & best wishes,

Amelia

Editor's notes:

This is not Hulda's sister-in-law, Amelia (A. Neiderhauser nee Kracaw), who married Hulda's brother, John F. (his second wife). That Amelia died in 1898.

Will Charlton was the husband of Hulda's younger sister, Lucy.

Mrs. Jake Beaty (spelled Beatty above) was Hulda's sister in law, married to her brother Jacob. (Elizabeth (Blick(ensderfer))).

Boyd Smith was the grandson of Mrs. Jake Beaty. He was a son of Hulda (Beaty) Smith, who was Jacob and Elizabeth (Blick(ensderfer))'s third child.

Although the names of Minnie, Maggie, and Ollie all seem to run in the Snider family (Hulda's sister Elizabeth (Beaty) Snider's kids and in-law's), the ones mentioned in this letter don't seem to be them as the geography doesn't seem to match. They were all in Kansas, as near as we can tell, at this point.

The "Lizzie"mentioned towards the end of the letter probably isn't the sister Elizabeth of Hulda, mentions that Lizzie's mother died in the current year. Hulda's and Elizabeth's mother died in the 1890's.
