3-Mar 1892 U. S. Hotel formally opened opened by I. F. Attleton as New United
States Hotel, and the members of Brown Alumni held their annual dinner there

7-Mar 1892 Committee of Business Men's Association reported estimated
cost of widening Thames Street from Long Wharf to Langley's Wharf to a
uniform width of 50 feet as $255,513. NMA 1893

12-Mar 1892 Two suits were brought againt the Savings Bank of Newport this
week to recover the sinking fund of the city - the first for $150,000 in the
name of the city and the second for $30,000 in the name of D. M. Coggeshall,
the city treasurer. There is politics in them and it is not believed either

17-Mar 1892 St. Patrick's Day. The pupils of St. Mary's Parish gave
an entertainment at their hall in the evening and Rev. Father Coyle, of St.
Joseph's, lectured at the Opera House, on “Ireland's Battle for the
Faith.” NMA 1893
5-Apr 1892 Supreme Court acquitted Miss Johnson, charged with robbing the
Misses Newman's cottage on March 9. NMA 1893
6-Apr 1892 Spring Election. The counts by the warden and clerks showed no
election except for fourth representative. J. H. Crosby, Jr., was given a
majority of 7. The official count of Mayor and Board of Aldermen, however,
elected W. J. Underwood senator, Wm. P. Clarke, 1st representative, J. H.
Crosby, Jr., fourth representative, all Democrats.
7-Apr 1892 Lawton Coggeshill is severely wounded in the head by a shot from

7-Apr 1892 William H. Easton died at the Hospital from the effects of an
accident received in the morning at the stone crusher at Price's Neck.

10-Apr 1892 Unoccupied barn on Spruce street owned by William H. Underwood
destroyed by an incendiary fire. NMA 1893
11-Apr 1892 Geo. H. Weaver's Block on Broadway, Spring and Stone streets
destroyed by fire early this morning. NMA 1893
12-Apr 1892 The bye-election. The wardens and clerks' counts gave no
choice except for James S. Hazard for second representative, but at the official
count, S. R. Honey, J. S. Hazard, Geo. Gordon King were declared elected second
third and fifth representatives , thus making the delegation wholly Democratic.

It was decided that justice had not been done the Republican candidates for
the General Assemby and a committee of two from each ward to investigate.
