Thomas's widow, Elizabeth at some stage moved to mainland Cornwall with the children - certainly before 1840 when she re-married. On 22 February 1840, Elizabeth Deason married Philip Bonetto at St Just-in-Penwith, Anglican Church. Philip was noted as: “aged 47 years; a bachelor; occupation, a miner; residence, Carrack; father, Philip Benetto, a miner”. Elizabeth was noted as: “aged 46 years; a widow; residence, Carrarack; father, Walter Jenkins, a farmer”. They were married by the Vicar, John Walker and the witnesses were James Hall and John Tregear. Both Philip and Elizabeth made their mark “X”. Note: the marriage certificate incorrectly recorded Elizabeth's surname as “Deaken” and Philip's surname was incorrectly indexed under “Bennet”.3

Philip Bonetto died 14 December 1847 at the Union Workhouse, Madren, Cornwall. His death certificate recorded that he died of “consumption” and was a “miner” aged “55 years”. These later details are consistent with marriage details. Workhouse rules required the destitute to walk a fixed distance in order to qualify (probably about 5 miles). The Madren Poor-Law Union Workhouse, would therefore qualify for those living in the St Just area. Further research required.3

The 1841 Census recorded the following entry:
“Parish of St Just
Place: Cararack” [spelling is not clear]
“Names: Philip Bonetto, aged 45 years, miner
Elizabeth Bonetto, aged 45 years
Thomas Deason, aged 15 years, miner
John Deason, aged 12 years, tin dresser”.

Note: the 1841 Census record had a specific way in which to denote inhabitants in the same house who were not related; this was not the case for the record shown above, i.e. they were indicated as a single family unit. This could only mean that Elizabeth Bonetto was the mother of the two boys.3

It is likely that the place noted in the 1841 Census is the 'Carrarrack' noted in the Gazetteer of Cornwall 1884. The Gazetteer recorded it as simply, “22 acres” - as if referring to a farm. Other records refer to it as ”Cararack”, ”Carraracke” and “Cararrack”. Its exact location is not known according to current Cornish researchers. Certainly, a public house existed at the site - the 'Queen's Arms' - as late as 1873. In the 1841 Census book entries for the villages of Carnyorth and Botallack were recorded on the preceding pages to the Cararack entry with the entry for Truthwall on the following page. This may indicate that Carrarrack lay somewhere between these locations.

What we do know from the 1841 Census is that Cararack was a small village of 14 households. There was at least one shop, and while most households were noted as miners, two were noted as farmers. This could indicate that Cararack may have been originally been a small farming village. (For more information on Carrack refer entry for son, John Deason).

Just how many years the family spent in Cararack is not known. However, by 1843 the family were living in the nearby mining village of Botallack. Philip Bonetto was noted as a resident of Botallack at the time of the death of John’s brother, Thomas, in September 1843. (For more information on Botallack refer entry for son, John Deason).

By 1847 the family appear to have fallen on hard times as John’s step-father, Philip Bonetto, died 14 December 1847, at the Union Workhouse, Madron, Cornwall. His death certificate recorded that he died of “consumption” and was a “miner” aged “55 years”. These later details are consistent with marriage details. Workhouse rules required the destitute to walk a fixed distance, usually to an adjoining parish (about 5 miles), in order to qualify for assistance. The Madron Poor-Law Union Workhouse would therefore qualify for those living in the St Just parish. Further research required.

By 1851 the family had moved to the larger mining town of Trewellard, situated on the main road approximately 3 kilometres north of St Just. (For more information on Trewellard refer entry for son, John Deason).

The 1851 Census recorded:

Note: no trace has been found of Elizabeth in the 1851 Census.

Hard times appear to have continued as Elizabeth died 7 July 1862, the Union Workhouse, Madron, Cornwall. Her death certificate recorded that she died of “apoplexy” [i.e. a stroke], was the “Widow of Philip Bonetto Tin Miner” and aged “69 years”. It also noted her residence as “Union Workhouse Madron” which may indicate that she had been living there for some time. Madron was the town where her daughter, Grace and family were known to be living in 1861 (refer entry for Grace Deason). Elizabeth was buried four days later in St Just in Penwith (Anglican Parish register) noted as aged “69 years” and residence “workhouse”.

At the time of Thomas’s baptism in 1785 the family was noted as living at Tresco.

At the time of their marriage in 1820, Thomas was noted as a “bachelor”, Elizabeth a “spinster” and both from Tresco. They were married by banns by Rev James Lane; Elizabeth (incorrectly registered as “Mary” and later corrected to read “Elizabeth”) made her mark “X”, Thomas did not sign or make a mark; witnesses William Pender and John Ellis.

Elizabeth’s parents, Walter Jenkin and Grace Pender, had seven children:
• Mary Jenkin (c1783-?);
• Henry Jenkin (c1789-?),
• Elizabeth Jenkin (c1793-1862);
• Charles Jenkin (c1796-?);
• Grace Jenkin (c1799-?);
• Walter Jenkin (c1801->1846); and
• John Jenkin (c1804-?).

Thomas and Elizabeth’s first child is likely to be a daughter – Elizabeth Deason – known only from a burial record, 20 May 1821, which notes her as an “infant” of “Tresco”. Although the parents were not recorded in the burial register a review of the Deason families on Tresco at that time makes it unlikely for Elizabeth to be the child of any other family. In addition, naming Elizabeth as the first child follows tradition: first born son named after the father; first born daughter named after the mother; second born son named after the paternal grandfather; and second born daughter named after the maternal grandmother.

At the time of the baptism of son, Thomas (1826), the family were noted as living at Tresco.

Thomas’s occupation was noted as a “farmer” on the death certificate of his son, Thomas, in 1843 and again, in 1858, when his son, John, married for second time in Australia. Thomas was also noted as a “fisherman” at the time of his son, John’s first marriage in 1851, Penzance and his death in 1915, Moliagul.

Thomas died 27 September 1830 as a result of drowning when the gig Hope foundered and sank on The Cow ledge - a submerged rock 500 metres off the western shore of St Mary’s. Gig, a local Scilly term, was a six-oared boat, usually with a crew of eight, used for inter-island transport and for carrying pilots to ships requiring navigational help through the shallow and dangerous channels of the Isles of Scilly. Piloting provided a good source of revenue to supplement farming on the islands. The Hope was “much overladen, shipped a heavy sea and sank” and of the “14 on board”, five were drowned:
• Thomas DEASON (c1785-1830), noted as age 46 years;
• James JENKIN (c1763-1830), 67 years;
• Charles JENKIN (c1795-1830), 35 years;
• John ODGER (c1776-1830), 54 years; and
• Catherine ODGER (c1776-1830), 54 years.
All were buried on 27 September 1830. The school-teacher and the parish priest were among the survivors. Note: it is likely that those drowned were all closely related. (Further research required – determine relationship, if any, of those drowned to Deasons).

It is difficult to determine for how long Thomas Deason’s family remained on Tresco after his death. Certainly they had moved to mainland Cornwall by 1840. Conditions on the Isles of Scilly in the early 1800s became untenable due to over-population and lack of work and in 1834 a new landlord, Augustus Smith, took over the running of the Isles. He evicted many islanders on the basis that the islands were over-populated and compelled children of larger families to find work on the mainland. Those least able to support themselves were the first to go. Augustus built a new home and garden within the grounds of the ruins of Tresco Abbey. This was completed in 1838 but did require the demolition of three islander homes – all belonging to Jenkins families.

However, the Deason family may have remained on Tresco for a period beyond 1834 so that the children could attend school there. Evidence suggests both, that they were literate and more likely to have received an education on the Isles of Scilly than on the mainland. Son, John, certainly could sign his name as evidenced in 1851 & 1858,. Likewise, daughter, Grace, was also able to sign her name in 1853 whereas her husband could not. The children may have attended the Anglican Church school that had been established on Tresco in 1752 to help the islanders. In the mining areas of mainland Cornwall it is unlikely that access to education would have been possible as this was before the days of compulsory education. So a move by Elizabeth and the children to the mainland closer to 1840, when John was about eleven, may well be the likely scenario. They were definitely in the St Just in Penwith area by 1840 when Elizabeth, married Philip Bonetto.

In the meantime, daughter, Grace, took-up work as a domestic servant and by 1841 was working in Paul (for more information – see 431) and sons, Thomas and John, went to work at the mines near St Just in Penwith (for more information – see 432 & 433).
