Notes for George KERRISON
George KERRISON, born 21 May 1836, died 18 Feb 1874, Tamar River, Tasmania. Married 24 Dec 1855, St. Matthias Ch., Windermere, Tasmania, Selinah MOORE, born 1836.

Lived married life at Sidmouth and Gravelly Beach, Tasmania.

There was an article, On the Tide - Stories of the Tamar Number 52, on the “Little Nell” explosion on the Tamar River, Tasmania in the “Examiner” newspaper on 28th October 2000.

The following extract is from the book “Kerrisons in Tasmania 1835-1985” by Mandi Ann Haynes nee Kerrison, page 47:

George married Selina Moore and they had six children before his tragic death in 1874. He died as the result of an explosion on board a steamer the “Little Nell”, trading between George Town and Launceston. The newspaper account says it was “a deplorable and fatal accident . . . The Tamar (tug-boat) and the “Little Nell” were steaming up to town about noon yesterday, the “Tamar” passing the little boat near “Coulson’s. It seemed the “Little Nell” had put on extra power with the fruitless object of keeping up with the tug-boat . . . The “Nell” was seen to stop, as if some of the machinery were broken, and it is conjectured that the safety-valve was closed, so that there might be no loss of steam, and hence the explosion of the boiler in about five minutes after the vessel stopped, whereby the boat and crew and passengers were blown up into the air. The boat was shattered into a thousand parts, and the crew and passengers, with the exception of three persons, who were rescued from a watery grave by the intrepidity and promptitude of James Gilder and his brother who were working the cutter “Margaret”, being also lost . . . Mr. George Kerrison, farmer, was taken up at Gravelly Beach – making the number on board at the time of the accident occurred eleven . . .”

Selina remarried William Stonehouse on 4 Dec 1885, aged 57, at the house of her eldest daughter and son-in-law Albert E. Maumill.
