Notes for Eliza KERRISON
Eliza KERRISON, born 7 Sep 1824, Attleborough, Norwich, Norfolk, England, died 26 Jul 1905, St. Arnaud, Victoria. SOURCE NOTES: Eliza left Tasmania with 3 children on 26.5.1849 for Adelaide on the "Halcyon". Joseph must have died in Mt. Barker if he was 1 1/2 years old.

Headstone: In fond remembrance of our dear mother Eliza Taylor died 26.7.1905, aged 81 years. Nearer my god to thee. Erected by her loving children. Archer Hancock died 31.5.1908, aged 60 years and his loving wife Caroline Hancock died 16.9.1928, aged 74 years.

Marriage Cert. No. 712 at St. John's Church, Launceston "...According to the Rites and Ceremonies of the United Church of England and Ireland by Banns". Neither James nor Eliza could sign their names, making a mark instead. Witnesses were David Wheatley, who could not write, and William Jones, who could. The latter was apparently a church official as he is also a witness to the next marriage listed 2 weeks later. James' aged is given as 27 and Rank as "Free - Bricklayer". Eliza's age is given as 15 and Rank as "Free". These designations for Rank clearly indicate that both were not convicts. Also, the words "with the consent of the Government", do not appear on the registration.

Death Cert. No. ? in District of St. Arnaud. Died of carcinoma of stomach and liver.

Eliza could have been born at either Norwich or Attleborough in Norfolk. Norwich is stated on her daughter Emily's birth certificate where Eliza herself is listed as the "informant". Attleborough is stated on her daughter Adelaide's birth certificate. Adelaide's sister Eliza was the informant on this occasion. Married 27 Apr 1840, St. John's Ch., Launceston, Tasmania, James Suddy TAYLOR (3958), born 17 Apr 1813, London, England, died 21 Jul 1862, Maryborough Hosp, Maryborough, Victoria.

Mother’s name at registration of death wa given as Mary GOODENER.

The following extract is from the book “Kerrisons in Tasmania 1835-1985” by Mandi Ann Haynes nee Kerrison, page 28:
Eliza married James Suddy Taylor on the 27 April 1840 in Launceston. James was a Londoner born in 1812 or 1813.

On the 26 May 1849 they joined the family exodus to Adelaide with their three children aboard the “Halycon”. Another daughter was born in South Australia. Later they moved to Victoria close to Eliza’s sister Caroline. Eliza died at St. Arnaud on 28 July 1905 and is buried at Dunolly cemetery near Caroline.

Cause of Death: cancer of the stomach and liver.

The branch of the family orginating around Wymondham [pron. Windam] Norfolk was a prolific one. In the 18th century the parish church was baptising between 20 and 30 children each month, and many of them were Currisons, Bunns, Goodings etc. There are four reels of microfilm covering the Parish registers but those are probably incomplete because there were also smaller chapels thoughout the Parish and it's likely that baptisms and marriages also took place at these but I haven't found the records - if they've survived.

Eliza Kerrison was the third child of Stephen and Mary Kerrison who migrated to Van Dieman' s Land in 1835.

She was married at 16 to James Taylor (aged 27) in Launceston, Tas. in 1840, and widowed in 1862 at the age of 39 with six children aged from 19 to two, and three months pregnant with a seventh. She and her family appear to have been part of a very closely-knit social sub-group of former Norfolk/Tasmanian immigrants who became very closely connected by inter-marriage over several generations. Possibly that close extended family was her means of survival in a time before social security payments.

Her address at death is given as Kavarra Rd, Dunolly, and she is buried with her daughter Caroline (b.1853) and Caroline's husband, Archer Hancock at Dunolly Old cemetery.

Marriage:
rg no. 712 1840 St Johns, Launceston.
Notes for James (Suddy) (Spouse 1)
Nothing is know about James life before being married. He does not appear to be a convict.

Lived married life in Balfour Street and Howick Street, Launceston, Adelaide South Australia and Bendigo, Victoria.

The family sailed on board the “Halycon” on 26th May 1849 to South Australia. They lived at Pirie Street, Adelaide, South Australia. Also went to Sailor’s Gully, Carisbrook and Tanagulla all in Victoria.

He died of “congestion of the brain”. His death certificate was filled out without refernce to his family. Two men called James Taylor died in the same week, and the other man’s death was mentioned in the local peper, “The Maryborough and Dunooly Advertiser” on Friday, 1st August 1862.

Cause of Death: Congestion of the brain.

James Taylor was a bricklayer but his son, Edward's, BC in 1856 lists him as a goldminer aged 43 living in Sailor's Gully, Bendigo.

His record of marriage to Eliza Kerrison when he was 27 in 1840 makes it clear he was a fre e man, not a convict, but I haven't yet located how and when he came to Tasmania. A James Taylor, a 25-year-old soldier, arrived in Sydney from Portsmouth aboard the convict ship, MANGLES, on 10 Jul 1837. He would be about the right age if he then went on to Launceston.

Another James Taylor arrived in Launceston aboard the FRIENDSHIP on January 6th 1833, bu t I can't verify if either of these is the right James.

Elizabeth Jansen says the family left on board the HALCYON for Adelaide, SA. on May 26 1849 , following the death of their son Joseph, although I haven't verified this; the Hodge Index records the arrival in Adelaide on June 2nd of a "W.Taylor and three children", but not James's family. The HALCYON was a coastal brig which plied between Launceston and Adelaide at about monthly intervals. The family was recorded as living in Pirie St., Adelaide.

The move to Bendigo seems to have occurred in 1853, prior to the birth of their daughter Caroline at the end of that year, and the family lived at Sailor's Gully, Eaglehawk.

Some time after the birth of Edward, in 1856, the family moved again, this time to Carisbrook . Most of the alluvial gold on the Bendigo field had been mined by this time, and "deep lead" mining was the only way to make a living as a miner. This required lots of capital, and specialist knowledge in the workforce. The newer fields of Carisbrook, Tarnagulla, Maryborough, Dunolly and St Arnaud offered greater chances for an individual miner.

There is some uncertainty about his death at the moment: according to some sources, his deat h occurred in the Maryborough Hospital after a four-day illness, presumably with the family still living in Carisbrook, since the Death Certificate was filled in by hospital staff who could provide few details, and he was buried two days later at the Maryborough cemetery. However, this may be the wrong James Taylor: a photo dated c. 1866 was sent to me from Ron Kerrison which purports to show James, Eliza and their 4 oldest children. The boy said to be Edward [b. 1856] is about ten. If this has been correctly identified, James doesn't look four-years-dead! Further research pending.*

His last child, Adelaide, was born six months later.

*possible death at Sandhurst1881 at age 67 [5854] -wrong one.
