The following is from “A Short History of St. Leonards: With Some Notes on the White Hills and Franklin Village” by K. R. von Stieglitz, O.B.E., page 35:
“St. John’s at White Hills is the only church in the Parish with an endowment, for the purpose of keepin the building and fabric in repair. Electricity has recently been installed. This is th esecond church building, as the first (made of brick in 1843 and consecrated on Dec. 15th, 1857), became unsafe for services during the seventies of last century and was demolished. The present building was constructed in 1882.
In the cemetery, the largest plot is that of the pioneering Gee family. The first burial seems to have been that of William Muchall on the 5th Febraury 1848, Elizabeth Linton, 1850, Thomas Barker, ‘64, G. Hardman ‘76 and D. Kerr ‘77.”
