LAWTON CEMETERY
Catalogued May 22, 1975 by H. A. Dieter and Doug Chroninger. Located
3.6 miles north of Viola on Wis. 131 in section 6, Town of Forest. Wis.
131 turns sharply eastward at the northwest corner of Lawton, which is
also the east and west county line between Vernon and Richland
Counties. The old Kickapoo Railroad tunnel runs through the mound and
under the highway but a few rods east of the cemetery. The old site of
Elk Mound School, Joint District No. 17, appears directly west of 131
and the cemetery. The cemetery ground lies on a steep hillside facing
west toward the highway. It is poorly kept, mainly because of the
extreme pitch of the slope. There are at least 2 unmarked graves plus
the 26 known burials. The first known burial was in 1865, the last in
1936. It was reported that a workman was killed during the
construction of the Kickapoo Railroad tunnel near by and was
subsequently buried here at Lawton. The above data plus other
statements and plat records received by one Harold Lawton, LaFarge,
Wisconsin, was gratefully accepted as the final data on a burial ground
that would otherwise have been largely incomplete.
