Joseph was a man of means, active, ambitious and highly regarded as
shown by the public offices he held. He was a selectman of Boxford in
1792; as "Ensign Joseph Hale" he represented Boxford in the general
court four terms; as "Lieutenant Joseph Hale," six terms; as "Captain
Joseph Hale," five terms, as as Joseph Hale, one term, 1735. (Cutter, p.
