Johann George Kiess

     Johann George Kiess was born on 8 August 1781 at Möhringen, Oberamt Stuttgart, Neckarkreis, Württemberg.1 He was the son of Johann Wilhelm Kiess and Sophia Dorothea Auch. Johann George Kiess married Dorothea Ulmer, daughter of Leonhard Ulmer and Christina Margaretha Gohl, at Blooming Grove, Hepburn Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.2 Johann George Kiess died on 1 October 1858 at Warrensville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, at age 77 years, 1 month and 23 days. He was buried in the Blooming Grove Cemetery, located in Hepburn Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
     He John George Kiess, the father of Catharine Kiess, who was the wife of John George Waltz, kept the diary of the trip from Moehringen to Philadelphia. When he arrived in Philadelphia he had but fifty cents in money. He worked at his trade (shoemaker) in Williamsport for a year, when he began to buy land in Blooming Grove, in small quantities, as he could pay for it, until he had 137 acres when he settled there. He lies buried in the graveyard at the rear of the Dunker church.

George Kiess was a native of Wuerttemberg, Germany, and immigrated at an early date to Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. He purchased a farm near the site of Warrensville, where he spent the remaining years of his life. In partnership with his brother Chistopher, and a man named Waltz, he purchased a tract of 900 acres of land in Anthony Township, and divided it into three equal parts. Mr. Kiess gave his 300 acres to his sons John, Leonard and William, all of whom are dead.
