Philip <?> Carteret Governor of New Jersey (Rn=60752), who was born 1639 at Isle of Jersey, England and died 20 December 1682 at Elizabeth Towne, Union County, New Jersey at 43 years of age. He married 02 April 1681 Elizabeth <Richard> Smith Lawrence/Carteret/Townley (Rn=23977), who was born about 1642 at Smithtown, Eastern Long Island and died July 1712 at Elizabethtown, Essex County, New Jersey at 70 years of age, daughter of Richard (Bull) <Richard> Smith Major (Rn=23978) and Sarah <?> Hammond Smith (Rn=49388). Buried at Saint Mark's Church, 131 East 10th Street, New York City - Stuyvesant Vault. Occupation 1 - - First Governor of the Province of East and West New Jersey. First Residence - - England. Second Residence - - Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Third Residence - - Elizabeth Towne, Union County, New Jersey. Note [Philip Carteret was a fourth cousin of Sir George Carteret, first proprietor of East New Jersey].
