HEPHZIBAH GREW UP AROUND SCHOOL

When Hephzibah high school was established in 1860, the town of Hephzibah grew up around it, extending like the spokes of a wheel, one mile in every direction.   The "round" town of Hephzibah was incorporated by an act of the General Assembly on Oct. 24, 1870.  It's name is a biblical one, meaning "beloved in the Lord", but even in the official record of the town's incorporation, the name was misspelled in the index, the title, and the body of the act.

As a side note to the above article I just sent,, the flag pole in front of Hephzibah City Hall
was the exact center of the town for years, city limits were actually a mile all around it like a compass.
