Military Service: U.S. Army Air Corps (1940 - 1945) James intended to join the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Battle of Britain but could not make arrangements to do so. Instead, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, before the USA was directly involved in World War Two. He was trained as a mechanic, flight engineer and gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress, he never left the U.S. during WWII. Although he volunteered for service in the European Theater numerous times, the Air Corps kept him in the U.S., serving as an instructor. He served at Wright Patterson Field in Ohio and Moody Field in Valdosta, Georgia. He left the Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant.

Loretta June (Price) Guthrie died Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at the Patient's Medical Center, Pasadena, Texas. She was hospitalized there on Friday, September 7, 2007 after experiencing a sudden rise in her blood pressure. She was in the ICU.
