Nicholas moved to Mississippi in about 1847, and lived there for a few years. While there he worked as blacksmith. He built wagons for himself and several others. The wagons were to be used for a move to Arkansas. In the early 1850's, Nicholas set out for Arkansas - probably with several others. It is believed that he lived in Marion County and Boone County, Arkansas between about 1851 and 1883.
Nicholas was quite a craftsman. He made chairs, tables and other furniture for his home, and the homes of his children. Some of the old furniture was still in use by family members as late as the 1950's. He also made razor hones from hickory wood, that were passed down through the family.
In Arkansas, Nicholas worked as a farmer, blacksmith, and freight hauler.
Nicholas routinely hauled freight in wagons from Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas and Yellville, Marion County, Arkansas to Springfield, Missouri, and points in between. Many of these trips were over 100 miles long, over mountains, through valleys, and across rivers and creeks. It took at least 10 days to complete one of these trips, both ways, with good weather - and good luck. There were no railroads through that part of the country in those times. When he was 69 years old, it was one of these trips that caused Nicholas's death. He was caught in a heavy rainstorm, caught pneumonia, and died on February 15, 1883.
Nicholas had a granddaughter, Annie Frances (Gooch) Cantrell, who was still alive in October, 1960. She remembered the day of his funeral, and the trip to the cemetery for his burial. To get to the cemetery, they had to cross Clear Creek. The creek was so high that the casket was set on chairs on the wagon, so the water wouldn't reach it when they forded the creek. The women and young children were carried across the creek by men on horseback, and it was a very frightening experience.
Nicholas's grave has not been found. It is believed that he is buried near Efros, Boone County, Arkansas. Efros is located a few miles southeast of Harrison, Arkansas. It is believed that he was buried in a small cemetery, next to other family members.
