William Gooch

Came to America before 1650, probably as a soldier in the British Army.

Purchased land (possibly in partnership with his brother, Henry) in York County, Virginia about 1650.

Planter and citizen soldier. Participated in early colonial wars against Indians, French and Spanish, to command militia troops. Achieved rank of major.

Served as a member of the Virginia Council from about 1652 to 1655.

On record as dying young, at the age of twenty nine, in the late 1650's.

Records indicate that William Gooch came to America before 1650. He settled in the Tidewater region of Virginia, near Williamsburg and Yorktown. He was apparently a well educated and dynamic young man. He had two brothers in Virginia, Henry Gooch and John Gooch. He served as an officer, commanding militia troops in expeditions against Indians, and achieved the rank of major.

He owned a 6000 acre plantation in York-Hampton Parish, Virginia called "Temple Farm".

He died at the age of 29 in 1655, probably caused by malaria or one of other fevers that plagued the early settlers.

There are many different stories about the life of William Gooch. This is the version that I choose to believe.

He married a woman who is yet to be named as a young man, in his early twenties. The marriage produced two children; a daughter, Anne, and a son, William. Anne later married to a Thomas Beale. Some researchers believe that she was an ancestor of Confederate General R.L.T. Beale. I have found no records, but some believe that the son, William, married but died as a young man, before having children.

By some accounts, the mansion on the "Temple Farm" Plantation near Yorktown was the site where General Washington accepted the formal surrender of the British by General Cornwallis.

In 1891, an article in a Richomond, Virginia newspaper described the tomb of William Gooch on the site of old Temple Farm as being the the third oldest preserved gravestone in the state of Virginia.

The engraving on the tombstone of William Gooch read:

Major William Gooch, died October 29, 1655,
Within this tomb there doth interred lie,
No shape, but substance, true nobility itself,
Though young in years, just twenty nine,
Yet graced with virtues moral and devine;
The Church from him did good participate,
In counsel rare, fit to adorn a state.

Joseph Gooch

Contact with Hunter Currin through AOL (HCurrins), in regard to Gooch family heritage.

His early ancestor was Joseph Gooch, born about 1732. This branch of the family migrated northward, and now has roots in Ontario, Canada. I believe a link will be established to connect many of these people. Joseph is of the age to have been a brother of William (b. 1729), but that will have to be proven.

3/10/97- Linked as a brother of William Gooch, and son of Rev. Thomas Gooch.
