General Notes: Husband - William Elijah Gooch
William Elijah Gooch (1850 - 1929):
I have verified to my own satisfaction that my grandfather, Jesse Gooch, was a son of William Elijah Gooch, I now know that William Elijah Gooch was commonly known as "Lige" Gooch. He took the nickname "Lige" because it was used by his maternal grandfather, Elijah Oliver.
My mother told and re-told stories about her Gooch family when I was a boy growing up. "Lige" Gooch was always an important character in her stories. Most of Mother's stories were supposedly passed down to her by her father. She had no contact with others in her Gooch family as a girl growing up.
This is the way it was outlined in Mother's stories: Jess's father was named Lige. Mother painted the picture that she came from a wealthy and aristocratic old south family. They lived somewhere in the south and it did not seem to be in Texas. Mother often mentioned "Carolina" in her stories but she never spoke of North Carolina or South Carolina. His father owned a farm. It seemed like a big farm, as his father was always out during the day, riding around on his horse, checking on the land and overseeing the work of the black "sharecroppers" in the labor force. He treated those people like slaves, even though it was after the Civil War. He rode a big horse, and carried a small whip or "rider's quirt". He would often strike the black people with this quirt, when he became angry with them. It seems that he was a bad tempered and mean spirited man, and he often became angry. He was cruel with the Negroes, and he was inhumane with the farm animals. Jesse seemed to hate him from an early age. The character Jesse described in his stories brings to mind a Nathan Bedford Forrest type of man -- a vindictive old Confederate. He was arrogant, hard, cruel, and very bitter toward the Negroes - blaming them for causing the Civil War and the horrors of it all. He still believed in the "lost cause". In those times, There were many men like that in the south in the years after the Civil War. That attitude continued well into the twentieth century and, to a lesser degree, it is still evident today. In the stories, Jesse's mother was named Mary or Elizabeth. (As I remember mother's stories, her name was Mary but my half-sister sister remembers her name as being Elizabeth.) Mother mentioned the surname "Ford". It seems that Jesse adored his mother. In mother's stories, she died when Jess was about sixteen years old. He blamed his father for his mother's death, saying that his father was more concerned about his land and money than he was with caring for his sick wife. Jesse left home shortly after her death, and his stories indicate that he never had any more contact with his father.
In the stories, Mother talked about Jess sneaking away as a small child to go to the cabin of a Negro sharecropper's family to play with a little boy that was about his age. His father did not want his children to associate with the Negroes and he would get angry when he found Jess playing there, Jess sometimes hid under the table, which was always covered with a cloth, when his father came to the cabin looking for him.
In the spring of 1995, I contacted several descendants of William Martin Gooch, as I had reasons to believe he was my great great grandfather. In the early 1950's my mother made contact with a man named George Gooch in Abilene, Texas. George Gooch was then up in his eighties. His wife was named Hattie. We visited with them several times when I was a small boy. Mother called them Aunt Hattie and Uncle George. George was a younger brother of Lige Gooch and would have been my mother's great uncle. None of the people I contacted could confirm that Jess Gooch was part of that family line. I did find out there was a man named William Elijah Gooch, and he was born about 1850. He was the first born child of William Martin and Elizabeth Jane (Oliver) Gooch, and all of their twelve children were born and raised in northeast Mississippi. The most knowledgeable person I contacted was a man named William D. Gooch in Georgetown, Texas. He is a direct descendant of Luther Martin Gooch, a son of William Martin Gooch. William D. Gooch was a professional librarian and did quite a lot of genealogical research on their Gooch family. He provided me with a great deal of information about the family of William Martin Gooch but he did not believe that my grandfather, Lige Gooch, was a part of their family line. I continued my research and I still believed that Lige Gooch was linked to the William Martin Gooch line. Lige gooch remained a shadowy figure.

Elizabeth Jane Palmer, 1028 Hill Road, Houston, TX 77037, (granddaughter of Mary Pauline Gooch) remembers her mother, and some of the other older people in the family, talking about an "Uncle Lige". She did not know him, or any of his descendants. She thinks he died before she was old enough to remember him. She thinks he lived somewhere in northeast Texas, not far from the others. She thought that he was buried in the Hoyeye-Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hunt County, TX, with many of the others in the family of that time. Upon investigating, she found that he was not buried there, at least not as "William Elijah Gooch" or "Lige Gooch".
11/12/95 - LDS research notes: There are two entries of interest;
1. "W.E. Gooch married S.J.E. Davis, 30 October, 1872" (Itawamba County, Mississippi).
2. "William Gooch married Emily Blyth, 28 December, 1871" (Lee County, Mississippi). This Emily Blyth could be the "Emily" Bill Gooch mentioned. Still, there is nothing that states this was William Elijah Gooch.

Connie Ball, 2380 Crescent Drive, Paris, Texas 75460, reports that William Elijah Gooch is listed in the 1900 census for Lamar County, Texas, born March, 1850, age 50. In the household were: wife, Sarah Jane E., born Oct 1846, age 53; son, William T., born 1879, age 21; daughter in law, Angie, born 1882, age 18; granddaughter, Mary L., born 1900, age infant under 1. Connie Ball's husband, Dean, is descended from the Gooch line on his mother's side, but so far they are not sure of his family links, beyond his grandfather.
12/08/96
While William Elijah Gooch has not been ruled out as being the father of Jesse James Gooch, the information uncovered about his life does not seem to match the profile of "Lige" Gooch.

New information (exact source unknown) received over the INTERNET indicates that William Elijah Gooch ran away from home at age twelve, to serve as a drummer boy with the Confederate Army. This information was received from Ms. Eddie Josey-Wilson, 901 36th Street North, Great Falls, MT 59401, EMAIL [email protected]; it was contained in an E-Mail message thread that she read on the INTERNET in January, 1997. Ms. Wilson is descended from Thomas Gooch who lived in McNairy County, TN in the 1800's. The source of the drummer boy thread is Michele Valkenaar, 11000 Calloway View Drive, Knoxville, TN 37922 EMAIL [email protected]. Michele is descended from the William Martin Gooch line in some way.

(CONNIE BALL, PARIS, TX)
The 1900 census indicates that William Elijah Gooch and his wife Sarah Jane Elizabeth had seven children, four of them then still alive. Connie theorizes that the children could be: Mollie Gooch, wife of Frank New; Charles E. Gooch, husband of Lillie Bell Morris; Pearl Gooch, wife of D.J. Kirby; Jesse Gooch, husband of Bessie Fannin; L.C. Gooch, husband of Mollie Lloyd. Connie found marriage records for these people, but has not been able to link any of them to any of the known family lines.
William E. Gooch sold 121 acres of land in Hunt County, Texas, November 19, 1915; his share of his mother's estate.

I believe there is now sufficient evidence to prove that our grandfather, Jesse Gooch, was a son of William Elijah Gooch and a grandson of William Martin Gooch. While I have found little to support some of the elements in the family stories that were told by my mother, I believe we can now claim descendancy back to William Martin and Elizabeth Jane (Oliver) Gooch. There is still some question about my grandfather's real name, In written records, he is named as "Jess Gooch", "Jessie Gooch" or "Jesse Gooch". I have found no record where a middle name was shown, not even a middle initial. My mother recorded his full name as Jesse James Gooch in a family Bible entry; an earlier census record (1880) lists him as Jesse C. Gooch.
General Notes: Wife - S. Jane Elizabeth Davis
Sarah Jane Elizabeth Davis (1846 - abt 1890)
In the stories of Jesse Gooch as re-told my mother, his mother died when he was about 16 years old. He loved her dearly, and seemed to be shattered by her death. He blamed his father for neglecting her, and he left home shortly after she died. It seems that he hated his father for the rest of his life, and could never forgive him for neglecting his mother. By his stories, he had gone to sit by his mother's bed that day. She had been sick for some time, with pneumonia. She seemed to be feeling better that day. She asked him to open the curtains on her window, so she could see the sunshine. Then, she asked him to help her sit up in bed, and to prop her up on some pillows. When he lifted her into a sitting position, her lungs must have collapsed. She died there in his arms.
As I remember the stories that Mother told, her grandmother was named Mary or Elizabeth, and it seems like her last name was Ford. I may be confused on that, as it was many years ago. It is now verified that the wife of Lige Gooch was Sarah Jane Elizabeth Davis. She was still alive in 1900 and was likely dead before the 1910 census was taken. She did not die around 1890, as my grandfather's stories indicated.
Many Davis's on tax list for Lee County, MS, 1877.
