William Gooch (abt 1600 - abt 1685)
Birth place: Mettingham, Suffolk, England.
Justice of the Peace in Mettingham.
In 1664, he reported his pedigree at the Herald's Visitation of the County of Suffolk.
William Gooch and Elisabeth (Baspole or Baspoole) Gooch were the first on record to occupy the estate and mansion named "Benacre Hall" in Suffolk County, England. In 1926, the old house was destroyed by a fire. An article in the New York Times described that event. In the article, it was written that Benacre Hall had been the seat of the Gooch family in England for several centuries. At the time of the fire, the property was occupied by a Sir Thomas Gooch and his family, which included several children. The fire started in the nursery area of the old mansion, but all the members of the family escaped unharmed. It was written that the old house had 150 rooms and 365 windows. The fire burned all night and the old house was completely destroyed by the disaster.
