General Notes: Husband - Elijah Oliver
Elijah Oliver was the maternal grandfather of William Elijah Gooch.
Old census records show that Elijah Oliver was born in Tennessee. However, Elizabeth Jane Palmer in Houston, Texas has found records that show he may have been born in North Carolina -- in Rockingham County. In these records, he was one of ten sons of a George Oliver.
Elijah Oliver was apparently a wealthy man by the mid 1850's. There are many entries showing where he bought and sold land and other property in old records. He may have been in partnership with a James and Archilbald Oliver, and they could have been his brothers or cousins.
11/12/95 - LDS research notes:
The following marriages for people with the last name of "Olive" or "Oliver" are recorded in the northeastern region of Mississippi.
"Annie Oliver married Joseph Morgan, 15 January, 1871" (Itawamba County)
"J.L. Oliver married P.F. Kemp", 10 January 1871" (Prentiss County)
"Sarah Annie Oliver married Joe W. Morgan, 1870" (Itawamba County)
"T.J. Oliver married N.B. Woodward, 6 October, 1872" (Itawamba County)
"Fannie E. Oliver married E.W. Cheatham, 16 February, 1868" (Tishomingo County)
"Louisa Oliver married J.R. McMillan, 1 October, 1865" (Tishomingo County)
"Martha J. Oliver married John W. Lynn, 10 January, 1856" (Itawamba County)
(Name "Oliver" spelled as "Olive" in several cases)
I have not been able to tie these names to Elijah George Oliver, but they may be related to him.
Elijah Oliver shows up as a Justice of the Peace in Itawamba County, MS; marrying several couples there in 1846-1847.

General Notes: Wife - Mary (Polly) Kuykendall
Mary, last name unknown, was the maternal grandmother of William Elijah Gooch.
Mary's last name is not known. Her place of birth is listed as "Tennessee" in old census records. Elizabeth Jane Palmer in Houston, Texas says that her grandmother, Molly Gooch, told stories about Mary being a descendant of Daniel Boone. This is quite possible, as the first three families to settle in the region were descendants of Daniel Boone.
Mary was apparently from a wealthy family. They protested her marriage to Elijah Oliver, feeling that he was "beneath them" and had little to offer their daughter. He said "Some day I will be as rich as they are." She married him, despite the protests of her family.

Ray:
Attached is some information from Denise Young with the gr.gr great gr.andmother Oliver's chart. I was a little surprised to find we are part Dutch. This closes the search for who she was. My missing information is our Willie's parents. I am convinced he is from James Gooches line. I saw a census where a Byrd was living with Elizabeth Gooch in MS. Could it have been a sister? Check your library to see if they have the book about early pioneers in SC. Samuel Kelly is supposed to be listed in that book. We are only missing one generation to belong to DAR on the Gooch line. I have 2 Rev records for my Dad's side.but I have not applied. Maybe I will have time to work on it this year.

Hi Elizabeth,
Thank you for your email, and I'll see if I can't help answer some of your questions about both the Kuykendalls and the Olivers and my connection to them. The Gooch family also ties into these families on a larger scale and in with some of the other families I and some collegues are researching. I'll give you more information on the Gooch family at the conclusion of this email.
My connection to the families:
Kuykendall: The Kuykendall family ties into my Terry and Bounds of Jackson and White County Tennessee. Many of the Kuykendall brothers of the early generation settled in Jackson County Tennessee and married into the Terry family. Though there has yet been that "breakthrough" proof that my Terrys of White County Tennessee are definitively connected to those of Jackson County, TN, I have little doubt that a connection is there waiting to be found. In my search for that connection, I came across and collected all the data on the Kuykendall line and added it to my database for future reference.
Oliver: My connection to the Oliver line is similar to that of my connection to the Kuykendall line. I was interested in the Oliver line due to their connection to the Gooch and Kuykendall families.
Gooch: The Gooch family connects to several of my lines (both maternal and paternal) through my Kerr, Scott, and Terry lines. The Gooch family also connects in a major way to some of the families associated with the Terrys (though not my direct line).
Family Information:
I have a great deal of information on all the families listed above, but to answer your more direct question of your line, I'll refine myself to only that information for now. (The files themselves are very large, even when broken down into smaller bits. I probably couldn't send them via email due to the constraints of my email account with respect to attachments.) I'll work by generations of families (gen 1 being parents, gen 2 children, gen 3 grandchildren and so on) down through your line, and should you need or want more information, I'll be glad to supply it for you.
Kuykendall:
The following information follows your line of the Kuykendall family from New York to North Carolina to Tennessee, to Mississippi, and then finally info Texas.
Generation 1: Leur Jacobson Van Kuykendall b 1650 Fort Orange, New York; d aft 1720 Machackameck, Orange County, New York. Married Grietjen Aertze Tack, b 18 Jun 1663 Albany, New York; d 1720 Minisink, Orange County, New York.
Generation 2: Mattheus 'Matthew' Van Kuykendall, b 1690 Rochester, New York; d 1754 Anson County, North Carolina. Married Janetie 'Janetjen' Westfall, b 17 Mar 1687/88 Kingston, Ulster County, New York.
Generation 3: Petrus 'Peter' Kuykendall, b 28 Jan 1718/19 Deerpark, Orange County, New York; d 17 Feb 1783 Washington County, Tennessee. Married Mary 'possibly' Hampton, b unknown; d unknown.
Generation 4: Jesse Young Kuykendall, b 1775 Tryon County, North Carolina; d 1834 Jackson County, Tennessee. Married Jeannie Hall, b abt 1780 North Carolina; d abt 1832 Texas.
Generation 5: Mary 'Polly' Kuykendall, b 1813 Tennessee; d aft 1850. Married Elijah Oliver, b 1811 Tennessee; d aft 1860 Mississippi.
Generation 6: Elizabeth Jane Oliver, b abt 1832; d 1914 Hunt County, Texas (buried at Hogeye, Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Hunt County, Texas). Married William Martin Gooch, b 1824; d 1919 Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas (buried with wife at Mt Carmel Cemetery).
Generation 7: Mary Pauline 'Molly' Gooch, b 29 Jan 1858. Married W. J. Jones.
Oliver:
On the Oliver line, I only have to Elijah Oliver and his family. I'll list their family as I have them from census and other records.
Elijah Oliver, b 1811 Tennessee; d aft 1860 Mississippi. Married Mary 'Polly' Kuykendall b 1813 Tennessee; d aft 1850. Chilren:
1. Elizabeth Jane Oliver b abt 1832; d 1914 Hunt County, Texas. Married William Martin Gooch.
2. Paulina Oliver b 1834 Tennessee
3. Prudence Oliver b 1836 Tennessee; d 12 Feb 1857. Married Benjamin Franklin Archer b 19 Apr 1834; d aft 1906. (Note: Prudence and Benjamin were married on 20 Dec 1855, and then she died on 12 Feb 1857. It is unlikely that there were any children to survive this union, and it has been speculated that Prudence died in childbirth.)
4. Jesse C. Oliver b 1838 Tennessee
5. Bertha Ann Oliver b 1840 Mississippi
6. George Oliver b 1842 Mississippi
7. Mary Oliver b 1845 Mississippi
8. Maryann Oliver b 1847 Mississippi
9. Elijah Oliver b May 1850, Itawamba County, Mississippi
Gooch:
The parents of William Martin Gooch were William Gooch b 1790-1799 d 1859 and Sarah [Maiden Name Unknown]. This line ends here in my database, but I have no doubt that perhaps these Goochs connect to my larger set of Gooches. I have the entire family grouping (siblings) of William Martin Gooch if you'd like to have them.
It is interesting to me that your families all converge in Itawamba County, Mississippi or thereabouts at some point in history. A friend and co-researcher and I went to Itawamba County just last year (September 11) and did some research on all these families. The main tie in for the Gooch family in Itawamba County comes through the Gillentine line. We have a group researching this line, both at yahoo.groups and via email mailing lists that I'm sure you could benefit from. There is one man, Stanford Gooch, who is very keen on the Gooch family and that area of research. I'll have to dig up his email address and send it to you.
For additional reading on the families above try the following:

Dalton Ray Phillips, Callahan and Phillips Family Line in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma, (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rayphill/index.htm)
I'll see if I can't find that email addy for you and send it. If you would like to add your information to mine, or if you can make any corrections to the information I sent above, I'd love to have it. I so enjoy adding to the family :-)
I hope this helps you some in getting started, and I'll be glad to fill in any missing information or family groups. Whatever you need from here I probably have or can at least get you started on the road to finding it.
Have a great day, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon.
Sincerely,
Denise
