of Little Compton, Rhode Island
and Paris, New York

This is a timeline for Simeon PEARCE and Elizabeth SIMMONS, parents of Rebecca PEARCE RAYMOND. I've logged my research results here, although I have a separate research log and plan that details sources searched and sources I still plan to search. Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island

Date Event
27 Jan 1746/7
Little Compton, Tiverton, etc. transferred from Massachusetts to Rhode Island.
1754
Col. George Washington defeats French in Pennsylvania, starting the French and Indian War.
1760
British defeat the French and get French lands in America, including Canada. George III becomes king of England.
1760

After the defeat of the French the Indians cease to be a menace. The Housatonic Valley had been sheltered from settlement by Indians and geograpahically from the east by the Hoosac Mountains and on the west by the Taconic Mountains. Micah Mudge first settles Richmond, near the Stockbridge line. Berkshire county is incorporated in 1761. (RichMass, pp. 1-3.)

1764
British pass Sugar Act to tax the colonists, followed in 1765 by the Stamp Act.
27 Jan 1766 Simeon PEARCE born in or of Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island. He is the son of James PEARCE and Sarah SIMMONS of Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island. (www.alden.org/aldengen/mercysimmons/mercysimmons08.htm)

I think the references to Simon PEARCE born 26 Jan 1766 and Simeon PEARCE born 27 Jan 1764 are incorrect references. I don't think there was another child named Simon born on one of these alternate dates.

From the 1850 census, 1766 seems to be the correct birth year.
14 Sep 1767
James PEARCE, father of Simeon PEARCE dies in Little Compton, Newport, RI.
1770
British soldiers kill five Americans in the Boston Massacre.
1773
Boston Tea Party.
19 Apr. 1775
Revolutionary War begins at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. The revolution lasts until 1783 when the Peace Treaty is signed in Paris on 3 Sep. The last of the continental army is disbanded on the 2nd of November.
?
Simeon's brothers, Stephen, Ezekial and Ichabod, serve in the Revolutionary War. Stephen and Ezekial are known to have enlisted in Little Compton, Rhode Island. All serve in the Rhode Island line. As 1776 begins, their ages are 22, 15, and 13. At the end of 1783, they are 30, 23, and 21.

Council Clerk
2 Nov 1781
"Pierce, Simeon. Private, Capt. Samuel Clark's co., in a detachment from Col. Barnabas Sears's regt.; enlisted July 18, 1781; discharged Nov. 2, 1781; service, 3 mos. 21 days, “up the Mohawk River,” including 5 days (100 miles) travel home; regiment raised for 3 months. Roll sworn to in Berkshire Co." (Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution, Secretary of the Commonwealth, 1896.)

Our Simeon would only be 15 years old, so this is probably not him. But it is interesting that a Simeon PEARCE in Berkshire County, Massachusetts makes a trip up the Mohawk River. I imagine our Simeon might have lived in Western Massachusetts at one point before moving up the Mohawk River to Oneida County. Could the two be related?
2 Nov 1783
The revolution lasts until 1783 when the Peace Treaty is signed in Paris, France on 3 Sep. The last of the continental army is disbanded on the 2nd of November. Simeon is 17 at the end of the war.

It is interesting to think that Little Compton may have been occupied and Simeon or a close relative may have left or participated with the continental army in some fashion. Could he have been with the army that went to Herkimer, New York and thus was led to that part of the country later in life? Could he have been with the army at Ft. Ticonderoga in Vermont and met Pearis RAYMOND?

For a table of revolutionary war veterans I investigated for connections to our PEARCEs, see, "Not My Simeon PEARCE/PIERCE."
24 Dec 1785
Sarah SIMMONS PEARCE, Simeon's mother, dies in Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island. Simeon would have been 19 years old. As the eldest brother, Wright PEARCE would inherit the family property in Little Compton. As land along the coasts became crowded, the general migration flow was inland. Stephen, Ezekial, and Simeon may have moved shortly after this time. (Did John and Job stay in Little Compton?)
1788
1788 Tax List for Mohawk District lists Daniel Raymond (tax amount: 0, 4, 1), Ephraim Pierce (0, 13, 0) and Eben Chase (0, 4, 7). The records were contributed by Arthur C. M. Kelly, continued from Volume 4, Number 3, page 104 (through page 141?) and published on CD #132, Selected NY Revolutionary War Records, 1775-1840, genealogy.com.
1790
1790 U.S. Census
Simeon would be 24 years old. His parents have both passed away. Their children: Wright, Stephen, John, Ezekiel are in Little Compton, Kent, Rhode Island. Job, Ichabod (the first) and Ezrah have past away. Ichabod (the 2nd) and Simeon might be living with Wright and Ezekiel, as their households each have one extra male older than 16.

Paris and Marshall, Oneida, New York

Date Event
16 Feb 1791
Herkimer County, New York (containing the present territory of Oneida County), created from Montgomery County. Whitestown contains all the land that would become the towns of Paris and Marshall. (A History of the Hanover Society , Ada Marie Peck, 1995 revision, p. 10.) Deeds for 1791-98 for what later became Oneida County are in Utica. (FHL Catalog, can't remember what entry.)
1791
In 1791, Simeon's brother Stephen, with his wife and four children removed from Little Compton to Paris Hill, Oneida Co., New York, where he became a pioneer settler in a wild region which he lived to see populous. He was for many years a deacon and a prominent member of the Congregational Church at Paris Hill. (Source? An Ancestry World Family Tree note?)

According to one of Stephen's granddaughters, Stephen was accompanied to Paris by his brothers Ezekiel and "Simon." (Pierce genealogy: being a partial record of the posterity of Richard Pearse..., Clifford George Hurlburt, 1927, p. 40.)

13 Nov 1791
In a record made 27 Jan 1846, Rebecka [sic] PEARCE states she was born Nov'r. 13, 1792. (NauvWA, p. 323.) Later that day this record says she was born Nov. 13, 1791 and was born in Little Compton, Rhode Island [county], New York [state]. (NauvSeal, pp. 213-214.) The 13-Nov-1791 date is collaberated by a source recorded in 1847 (NauvSeal, p. 777). A transcription of a transcription of a record probably made in 1851 states that Rebeca WILLIAMS—thought to be our Rebecca PEARCE after marriage to Samuel WILLIAMS—was born in October of 1791 in Sangersfield, New York. (ECIF, Williams 378)

We theorize that Rebecca was the oldest child of Simeon PEARCE and Elizabeth SIMMONS. Simeon PEARCE was 25.
12 Dec 1791
Isaac CHASE born in Little Compton, Rhode Island. (According to LDS records.)
1792
The town of Whitestown was divided and Paris was formed. (Peck, p. 10.) The town encompassed several, modern counties.
1x July 1795

Previous to this date, Stephen PEARCE and Abigail SIMMONS are in church fellowship with 17 others in the Paris Religious Society. (FHL Film 1435720.)

1797
"Hanover Society" (Congregational) Church established. First Baptist Church established. (Genealogical Journal of Oneida County, New York, 2001, p. 42. FHL 974.762 D25j 2002.)
9? July 1797 Abigail the wife of Stephen PIERCE admitted into the First Church of Paris from the church in Little Compton. (FHL Film 1435720.)
15 Mar 1798
Oneida County formed from Herkimer County. (Peck, p. 10.)

Simeon would be 34 years old.
Elizabeth is 26-44 years old, thus born between 1756 to 1774. The 1830 census further limits her birth year to 1770 and 1774, so her age would be between 26 and 30.
Rebecca would be 8 or 9. She appears to be the oldest member of the family and has 3 younger sisters.

Because the Oneida county enumerator listed heads of households with only the initial of their given name, it is difficult to tell if Simeon PEARCE is listed.

War of 1812

In the war of 1812, Simeon's brother Stephen, notwithstanding his advanced age, again entered the American army to fill the place of his son George, who had been drafted, but who was by his duty to his family compelled to remain at home; and the veteran of the Revolution served as a Private on the Canadian frontier.

Rebecca is married and in Vermont.
There are 4 unidentified females 16-26.
There are 2 unidentified females 10 to 16.
Abigail is 5-10 (born between 1810 and 1815).
We know from the Hanover temperance pledge (1831) that there is a Simeon, Jr. I assume the male child is him. Simeon, Jr. was born between 1815 and 1820 according to 1830 census, so he is less then 5 years old at this time.

New York Census.
Simeon is 59 years old.
Elizabeth is 51-55 years old (born between 1770 and 1774 according to 1800 and 1830 census data). I assume she is incorrectly listed as one of the 4 unmarried females 16-45.
Rebecca has been in Vermont for at least 5 years, so she is not included in the count.
Abigail is 10-15 (born between 1810 and 1815) and must be the unmarried female under 16.
Simeon, Jr. is 5-10 (born between 1815 and 1820) and must be the 2nd male.
This leaves unaccounted 3 unmarried females aged 16-45. Clarinda, Julia Maria, and Elizabeth are possibilities.

1830 U.S. Census
Simeon is 64 years old.
Elizabeth is 56-74 years old (born between 1756 to 1774 according to the 1800 census. This census further limits her age to 56-60, so she was born between 1770 and 1774).
Abigail is 15-20 (born between 1810 and 1815).
Simeon, Jr. is 10-15 (born between 1815 and 1820).

1831
About this time the consolidation of the districts was agitated and the lower part of Hanover Green school house was built and known as District No. 6. Simeon PIERCE had one pupil attending. The trustees of this school were Anthony Peck and Joseph Page. (Peck, pp. 91-92.) John PEARCE lives in the Marshall portion of district no. 3 and has 3 pupils. (Peck, p. 90.)
1831
Elizabeth PIERCE and Simeon PIERCE, Jr. join the Hanover Society--Congregational, Rev. P. Field. (Peck, pp. 197, 204.) Is this the same Elizabeth that joined in 1818? I assume not. This may be another daughter of Simeon or a wife of Simeon, Jr.
2 Jan. 1831
The Marshall Temperance Society is formed. Simeon PIERCE signs the temperance pledge along with Elizabeth PIERCE. (Peck, pp. 102-104.) I assume these are husband and wife.
9 Aug 1832
Simeon's brother Stephen applies for Revolutionary War veteren's benefits at Paris, Oneida, NY. (Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files, 3 volumes, Virgil D. White, 1990, p. 2632.)
1832
Abigail PIERCE signs the temperance pledge. (Peck, p. 105.) I think Abigail is a daughter of Simeon and Elizabeth who is 17 to 22 years old (born between 1810 and 1815).
Simeon and Elizabeth's daughter, Rebecca PEARCE RAYMOND, names one of her children Abigail.
NEED TO CHECK FOR OTHER ABIGAIL PIERCES.
1833
Simeon PIERCE, Jr. signs the temperance pledge. (Peck, p. 106.) Simeon Jr. must be a son of Simeon, since they both signed. Since he signed a year later than Abigail, I assume he is a year younger.
1834
Abigail PIERCE joins the Hanover Society--Congregational, Rev. P. Field. (Peck, pp. 197, 205.)

CHECK PROBATE FOR Oneida (done), Herkimer, and Madison counties FOR ELIZABETH SIMMONS PEARCE.
1835
No Simeon PEARCE in Oneida County 1835 Census. (Oneida County, New York, Index to Census Records, FHL Film 1435187.) Simeon is 69 years old.
29 Mar 1836
Val and wife Catharine PIERCE, Sarah PIERCE (wife of Ezekiel), Ezekiel PIERCE, Jr. and his wife Phebe dismissed from church in Paris to Cassville. Nathaniel PIERCE dismissed to Cassville 8 June 1837. Val and Catharine were received back from Cassville 26 Dec 1841. ( Records of the Paris Religious Society... , Royden Woodward Vosburgh, 1921, pp. 634-637, FHL film 534222-3.)
1840
1840 U.S. Census
Simeon would be 74 years old. I haven't been able to find him in the 1840 census.
Elizabeth would be 56-60 years old and born between 1770 and 1774 according to 1800 and 1830 census data. SEARCH FOR PROBATE RECORDS FOR ELIZABETH SIMMONS PEARCE.
Simeon, Jr. is 20-25 (born between 1815 and 1820).
14 May 1843
Simeon's brother, Stephen, dies at Waterville, NY. (Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files, 3 volumes, Virgil D. White, 1990, p. 2632.)
1850
1850 U.S. Census
Simeon PIERCE would be 84. The Simeon PIERCE of Lyons, Ionia, Michigan is probably not our Simeon, because Clorinda DEAN is probably not his niece (as explained in An Inventory of Simeon PEARCEs).
Elizabeth would be 66-70 years old.
Simeon, Jr. would be 30-35 (born between 1815 and 1820). I have yet to find any of them in the 1850 census.
