This is a timeline for Simeon PEARCE and Elizabeth SIMMONS, parents of Rebecca PEARCE RAYMOND. I've logged my research results here, although I have a separate research log and plan that details sources searched and sources I still plan to search. Web links to a variety of resources are included. To see a census image for free, click on the icon. To see a census image on Ancestry.com, click on the icon. 1760 |
After the defeat of the French the Indians cease to be a menace. The Housatonic Valley had been sheltered from settlement by Indians and geograpahically from the east by the Hoosac Mountains and on the west by the Taconic Mountains. Micah Mudge first settles Richmond, near the Stockbridge line. Berkshire county is incorporated in 1761. (RichMass, pp. 1-3.) |
1764 |
British pass Sugar Act
to tax the colonists, followed in 1765 by the Stamp Act. |
27 Jan 1766 | Simeon PEARCE born in or of Little Compton,
Newport, Rhode Island. He is the son of James
PEARCE and Sarah SIMMONS of Little Compton, Newport, Rhode
Island. (www.alden.org/aldengen/mercysimmons/mercysimmons08.htm) I think the references to Simon PEARCE born 26 Jan 1766 and Simeon PEARCE born 27 Jan 1764 are incorrect references. I don't think there was another child named Simon born on one of these alternate dates. From the 1850 census, 1766 seems to be the correct birth year. |

"Pierce, Simeon. Private,
Capt. Samuel Clark's co., in a detachment from Col. Barnabas Sears's regt.;
enlisted July 18, 1781; discharged Nov. 2, 1781; service, 3 mos. 21 days,
“up the Mohawk River,” including 5 days (100 miles) travel home; regiment
raised for 3 months. Roll sworn to in Berkshire Co." (Massachusetts Soldiers
and Sailors in the War of the Revolution, Secretary of the Commonwealth,
1896.) Our Simeon would only be 15 years old, so this is probably not him. But it is interesting that a Simeon PEARCE in Berkshire County, Massachusetts makes a trip up the Mohawk River. I imagine our Simeon might have lived in Western Massachusetts at one point before moving up the Mohawk River to Oneida County. Could the two be related? |
2 Nov 1783 |
The revolution lasts until 1783
when the Peace Treaty is signed in Paris, France
on 3 Sep. The last of the continental army is disbanded
on the 2nd of November. Simeon is 17 at the end
of the war. It is interesting to think that Little Compton may have been occupied and Simeon or a close relative may have left or participated with the continental army in some fashion. Could he have been with the army that went to Herkimer, New York and thus was led to that part of the country later in life? Could he have been with the army at Ft. Ticonderoga in Vermont and met Pearis RAYMOND? For a table of revolutionary war veterans I investigated for connections to our PEARCEs, see, "Not My Simeon PEARCE/PIERCE." |
24 Dec 1785 |
Sarah SIMMONS PEARCE, Simeon's mother,
dies in Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island. Simeon would
have been 19 years old. As the eldest brother, Wright PEARCE would
inherit the family property in Little Compton. As land along the coasts
became crowded, the general migration flow was inland. Stephen, Ezekial,
and Simeon may have moved shortly after this time. (Did John and Job stay
in Little Compton?) |

page 141?) and published on CD #132, Selected NY Revolutionary War

1790 U.S. Census Simeon would be 24 years old. His parents have both passed away. Their children: Wright, Stephen, John, Ezekiel are in Little Compton, Kent, Rhode Island. Job, Ichabod (the first) and Ezrah have past away. Ichabod (the 2nd) and Simeon might be living with Wright and Ezekiel, as their households each have one extra male older than 16. |

Herkimer County, New
York (containing the present territory of Oneida County), created from
Montgomery County. Whitestown contains all the land that would become the
towns of Paris and Marshall. (A History of the
Hanover Society , Ada Marie Peck, 1995 revision, p. 10.) Deeds for
1791-98 for what later became Oneida County are in Utica. (FHL Catalog,
can't remember what entry.) |
1791 |
In 1791, Simeon's brother Stephen,
with his wife and four children removed from Little Compton to Paris Hill,
Oneida Co., New York, where he became a pioneer settler in a wild region
which he lived to see populous. He was for many years a deacon and a
prominent member of the Congregational Church at Paris Hill. (Source? An
Ancestry World Family Tree note?) According to one of Stephen's granddaughters, Stephen was accompanied to Paris by his brothers Ezekiel and "Simon." (Pierce genealogy: being a partial record of the posterity of Richard Pearse..., Clifford George Hurlburt, 1927, p. 40.) |
13 Nov 1791 |
In a record made 27 Jan 1846, Rebecka
[sic] PEARCE states she was born Nov'r. 13, 1792. (NauvWA, p. 323.) Later
that day this record says she was born Nov. 13, 1791 and was born in
Little Compton, Rhode Island [county], New York [state]. (NauvSeal, pp.
213-214.) The 13-Nov-1791 date is collaberated by a source recorded in
1847 (NauvSeal, p. 777). A transcription of a transcription of a record
probably made in 1851 states that Rebeca WILLIAMS—thought to be our
Rebecca PEARCE after marriage to Samuel WILLIAMS—was born in October of
1791 in Sangersfield, New York. (ECIF, Williams 378) We theorize that Rebecca was the oldest child of Simeon PEARCE and Elizabeth SIMMONS. Simeon PEARCE was 25. |

Census Simeon would be 34 years old. Elizabeth is 26-44 years old, thus born between 1756 to 1774. The 1830 census further limits her birth year to 1770 and 1774, so her age would be between 26 and 30. Rebecca would be 8 or 9. She appears to be the oldest member of the family and has 3 younger sisters. 1850 |
1850 U.S. Census Simeon PIERCE would be 84. The Simeon PIERCE of Lyons, Ionia, Michigan is probably not our Simeon, because Clorinda DEAN is probably not his niece (as explained in An Inventory of Simeon PEARCEs). Elizabeth would be 66-70 years old. Simeon, Jr. would be 30-35 (born between 1815 and 1820). I have yet to find any of them in the 1850 census. |
