NEWMAN CEMETERY

The Newman Cemetery is located about seven miles on Highway 103, West out of Lufkin, Texas. The cemetery is located on land that still carries the survey location as the "Martin Newman Survey" in the Angelina County Court Records. This property was the homestead of Martin Newman and his family which was obtained from an Excess Land Grant of 160 acres in 1870. Here the home of Martin Newman and his wife Flora Ann Willis Newman was built. Later, after their deaths and burial near the home, the land was divided and/or sold. Today, the place of burial of Martin Newman and his descendants exits as the Newman Cemetery.

Mr. Charles Haak died August 31, 1991 and was buried in the Cemetery. He is not related to the Newmans or their descendants. His desire was to be buried here because he found the setting serene and it was a place he would like to be laid to rest. The cemetery committee found this was sufficient reason and granted him his wish.
