Extracts from Henry Rolls of Lulworth Diary

 

Henry Rolls, the village shoemaker, lived his entire life in East Lulworth. This is from  his "Journal of Events" which he began as a young man in the 1820s, continuing through till his death in 1877 and continued by his son and granddaughter. Henry Rolls' original journal was deposited with the Dorset Archives, who hold copyright on behalf of his descendants. A copy of the transcription is also held by them and available for use at the Dorset Record Office in Dorchester. The transcribed journal is available in pdf format:

 

The following extracts give all the significant dates referring to BMD of Rolls or Ralls and alternative spellings in this diary and is published here with permission of his descendants. I note that whilst Henry with few exceptions used the Rolls spelling, the parish register for the same people gives variable spellings of Rawles, Rawle, Ralls and Rolls.
