24. John Gillis Gole (John S. , Jacob , Frederick ) was born¹ on 30 Jun 1883. He died on 21 Jan 1969 in Victoria, B.C.. He was buried in Cremated.

Living in London, Ont at time of mothers death.

His son Bob writes Jan 2004:-
I note my father, John, was not at home at the time of the 1901 Census. He was born in 1883 and would have been 18 on 30 June, 1901. That confirms what I know about his youth. While in his teens he worked one or two summers as a waiter on the passenger boats that went from Sarnia to Port Arthur/Fort William (now Thunder Bay) and Duluth. He then apprenticed with a tailor in Sarnia for a while, but soon got into the chain store business with F.W.Woolworth Co. I believe the stores were called Knox's when he made that move until Woolworth bought them out.

note John shows up in the 1901 census but not in the 1911!

John married Elza Myra Zeller on 4 Oct 1911. Elza was born on 5 Apr 1886 in Breslau. She died on 15 May 1967.

My father, John Gillis Gole, was born 30 June, 1883. He died in Victoria, B.C. and his ashes are buried in Royal Oak Burial Park, Victoria. He married Elza Myra Zeller (my mother) and she was born in Breslau, Ont. (not Brussels). Her ashes are beside my father's.

Then in 1990, I believe, I drove from London to Milverton and had lunch with Leander and Myrtle. That was a real treat. He was still smoking his pipe and said he had a drink every day. Also confirmed what my Dad used to tell, that when they lived on the farm near Breslau, they made maple syrup and sold it for 25 cents a gallon. I understand he never believed that anyone had landed on the moon.

As for the Gole farm near Breslau it was, if I can recall, about a mile, more or less, northwest of Breslau on highway 17, on the west side of the road. I was only in the house once, after Solomon Gole's funeral in 1934, and drove past it a few times. At the southeast corner of the intersection of highways 17 & 7 was (maybe still is) the school where my Father and his family went. South of there a short distance is the Mennonite Cemetery where John S. Gole 1850 - 1910 and his wife Nancy Gillies Gole 1853 - 1934 are buried. I have a picture of the tombstone and note the spelling "Gillies". "Gillis" and "Gilles" are often used as well. Further south again is the farmhouse where my Mother, Elza Zeller, and all her family were born.

26. Leander John Gillis Gole "Lea" (John S. , Jacob , Frederick ) was born on 21 May 1887 in Breslau. He died on 14 Jun 1991 in Milverton. He was buried West Montrose in United Church.

Leander was the West Montrose village Blacksmith living next door to the Blacksmith shop close to the "Covered Bridge" for most of his life. He was known as "Grandpa" to all village residents, and the often the subject of a humerous colum in the Elmira Signet written by the village store owner Greta (circa 1980s) mostly due to his fine sense of humor. He was also filmed for Bill Brahmas Ontario on Global TV and interviewed for a project for the Kitchener Libary.
Leander apprenticed as a blacksmith under Henry Hoff in Bloomingdale from 1903 to 1906 for which he was paid $125 for the 3 years. He worked for Charles Mansfield in Westmontrose in 1908. In the 1911 census (N Waterloo, sub 16, page 15) he is shown as a employed blacksmith boarding with Sylivester Good in Woolwitch Township. From 1915 till 1937 when he purched the Westmonrose Blacksmith shop for $7500 (build around 1900 by William Letson) from Oscar Isreal, he worked in St Jacobs, Hespeler & Moncrief. He ceased shoeing horses in 1958 and blacksmith operations in 1975 but continued woodworking in the shop and living in the ajcent house until 1984 age 97.
When his home burnt Christmas Day 1985 he continued to live with his daughter Myrtle in Milverton where he was visiting at that time. His house remains and shop was removed in 1986 and is now a small park for the use of visitors coming to see the Covered Bridge.
He liked a drink now and then and son in law Don tells of visits when Grandpa would say "Are you going to town soon" ...."Pick me up a case of beer" and then as an after thought with a little chuckle "Dont tell Ruth" (Ruth did not aprove of drinking and would shurly take him to task if he over indulged!)
In later years he walked "up the hill" to daughter Ruths home for supper most nights.

His 100th bithday was celebrated in Milverton Legon Hall with a large gathering of friends and relatives.

Isaac Leander John Gole was born on 16 Dec 1920 in Kitchener. He died on 22 Dec 1981 in Kitchener. He was buried West Montrose in United Church.

Isaac was a Military Policeman during the second world war, he left for England April 23 1946 and arrived back in Canada on 9 June and was discharged 24 June. He started working for Sunar Industries shortly afterwards and worked there untill his retirement shortly before his death.
Isaac & Ruth lived with his Father and Mother at Zubers Corners briefly after their marrage moving out in Nov 47.
By the time of Judys birth in 55 they were renting one half of the Stone Farm House on the west hill in Westmontrose from Wilson Millard. It is belived that they purchased the house when he died in 57. After Isaacs death Ruth sold the house and built a bungalow across the road on part of what was previously their vegatable plot. She later sold the East half to her daughter Cheryl and husband Tom who built their log home there.

Isaac married Lilly RUTH Wilkie daughter of Simon Wilkie and Lucinda Westfall on 16 Dec 1946 in Kitchener. Lilly was born on 6 Oct 1920 in Kitchener. She died on 5 Feb 1999 in Kitchener. She was buried West Montrose in United Church.

Ruth writes in her diary Dec 14 1946:-
"My big day. We were married this afternoon at 2.30.......Roy H. stood up for us. Sorley married us. To Conestogo for supper. ??? took rotor out of the car but Johnnie got us annother one...... Isaac and I skipped out to the Walper House for the nite.
