Lovell's 1871 Directory - Bay de Verde

BAY DE VERDS - A large fishing settlement on the north side of Conception Bay, in the district of Bay de Verds. It has nothing that might be called a harbor, but affords a shelter in bad weather. The fishing grounds of Bay de Verds are among the most valuable in the island, perhaps it would be hard to find an equal extent of cultivated land which could compare with these sunken ledges either in value or in the power of continuous production. Every year about 200 boats and more than 200 nets and seines are employed in this locality on the fishery, the product of the voyage being worth not less than $50,000. Distant from Carbonear by road 38 miles. Mail weekly. Population 650.
