Anthony Walsh

Anthony Walsh and his younger brother Darby immigrated from Ireland about 1884. They settled in Olyphant, Lackawanna County and worked in the coal mines there. Darby died in 1888. Anthony died in 1901.

Anthony married Mary Jordan (pronounced by the family as Jurdan) presumably in Ireland. Their oldest child James Patrick Walsh was born on 23 Feb 1882 in Ireland. Their second child Anthony Walsh was born in Apr 1885 in Pennsylvania.

Darby arrived in New York on April 21, 1884 on the ship "Nevada". Anthony must have come over before that, but no passenger list has been found which includes him. Mary and their oldest child James arrived in New York on May 12, 1884 on the ship "City of Berlin". Mary is listed as age 24. Mary's younger sister Margaret also immigrated although it may have been at a later date as she is first found in the 1920 census.

In 1900, 1910 and 1920, the census lists this family in Olyphant, Lackawanna County, PA. The 1900 census is the only one that Anthony Walsh is listed in as he immigrated after 1880 and died in 1901. It lists him as a coal miner born in Ireland in Nov 1846, age 53. It lists year of immigration as 1883, which is consistent with the above information. His wife Mary is listed as born in Mar 1860 in Ireland, age 40, immigrated 1884. It also lists Mary as having 9 children with 9 living and that they were married for 18 years. James Patrick the oldest child born in Ireland is also listed as having immigrated in 1884. The three oldest children all sons from age 13-17 are listed as working in the coal mines.

The 1910 Census lists Mary as a widow and head of household. She is age 48 and mother of 9 with 8 still living. Their daughter Loretta having died in 1906 at the age of 18. She and her son James are listed as immigrated in 1884.

The 1920 Census lists Mary as a widow and head of household. She is age 55, immigrated in 1886 and Naturalized in 1889. Mary died 26 Feb 1920.
