It is not known whether Thomas J. O'Hara was born in Ireland or the US. In the 1880 census it is stated that he was born in Pennsylvania. In the 1900 census it is stated that he was born in Aug 1845 in Ireland and immigrated in 1847. This information is repeated in 1910. In 1920 it is stated that he was 73, which would assume a birth year of 1847 and that he immigrated in 1848. It also stated that he was naturalized in 1869. A record of his naturalization has not been found to date.
About 1874 he married Mary Cummings who was born in Ireland. There is a little discrepancy as to her age and immigration date. Per the 1880 census, she was age 30. Per the 1900 census she was born in Nov 1854. The 1910 census is consistent with 1900, but in 1920, she is age 64. Per the 1900 census Thomas and Mary were married 26 years, which would put their marriage date about 1874. Per the 1900 census, Mary immigrated in 1866, per 1910, 1864 and per 1920 she immigrated in 1856 and was naturalized in 1864.
It is believed that they always resided in the Lackawanna County area, but no earlier records have been found prior to 1880. Their oldest child was born in 1874 in Pennsylvania.
