Phillip Haas

Phillip and Kunigunde Haas came to the United States on August 10, 1853 on the ship "Catherine" from Antwerp to New York. Phillip filed a declaration of Intent in the Common Pleas Court, Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio on 19 Sep 1856. He died sometime between then and 1858 presumably in Muskingum County. Kunigunde died 29 Jul 1859 in Muskingum County. She is listed in the German Lutheran Church (Immanuel Church of Christ) death records in Zanesville.

Their son, Karl Heinrich Haas, was born in Gusternhain, Hessen, Nassau, Germany. It is not known if he was married in Germany or the United States or if he immigrated with his parents or shortly before/after them. He filed a Delaration to become a US citizen in the Common Pleas Court in Zanesville, OH on 27 Sep 1853. He was naturalized 11 Mar 1856. He married Elizabeth Eckerl. His oldest child Caroline was born in Zanesville in 1856. Not much more is known about Elizabeth Eckerl. Her death record indicates that she was born 4 Feb 1828 in Hessen, Germany. Her surname of Eckerl is derived from the German Lutheran church baptismal records of her children.
